When I saw this Feathers pattern by The Pattern Basket, I knew I had to make it. Eva loves birds and these scrappy little cutie pies will be adorable on a quilt in her bedroom. This is not going to be a weekend project, I can tell you that right up front. I think each block has something like 28 pieces, and it is going to take me some time to make 30 of them.
This is a pattern where you need to be super organized. My Alphabittie labels are going to be a life saver in helping me keep all these units straight. If it wasn't confusing enough with all the gazillion pieces/units, there are right facing birds and left facing birds, and of course the construction of each variety is different. This will not be a project to work on when I am tired or distracted.
My first birdie block took me a fair amount of time to construct, mainly because there are an infinite number of ways you can sew these little pieces together incorrectly. I discovered a couple of them right out of the gate.
I noticed the fabric the designer used in the sample quilt is a Fig Trees collection that was out last summer. Strawberry Fields, Revisited was the name of the collection. I have a lot of Fig Tree scraps, so I thought I could put something together that would look similar to the quilt on the pattern cover.
But hold the phone.
Did any of you join up to make the 2011 Designer Mystery Block of the Month hosted by Fat Quarter Shop? Yeah? You did? Well, so did I. I made three or four blocks, lost interest and figured maybe I would catch up at some point. Never did. And what was the fabric collection featured in that BOM program? The original Strawberry Fields by Fig Tree! If you are like me, and have that block of the month program sitting unfinished in a project box, I think you will see that there is plenty of fabric to make the Feathers blocks. Including the cream background!
How about that? I re-purposed a six year old Block of the Month program I thought I had wasted a boatload of money on!
But that's not all. I also have the Number 6 Frivols tin, that features the Strawberry Fields Revisited fabric. So I have enough of this cute fabric to make three Feathers Quilts. Which is not going to happen. At any rate, shop at home my friends. I have plenty of fabric to choose from when I put these cute little birds together.
Don't you just love it when that happens?

I love your little bird but did you realize the yellow HST for the wing is on the wrong position? It looks really complicated I think this pattern would confuse me to no end.
It’s great that you can reuse your fabrics and that’s the reason we quilters have a stash;-)

How great is that when you can use the fabric from an old unfinished (and perhaps “never to be finished”) project on something new. These birds are going to be adorable!

This is a funny story!! And the beak! How cute is that?? Leave the block as it is, cuz no-one will notice the backwards HST. I got yesterday’s BH done as well as week 9, so I’ve made a little ground in that.

I have bought this pattern, as well. I plan on using several collections of Fig Tree fabrics. I think they will work well in this. Keep us up to date on your progress. It keeps us all inspired.

Tweezers anyone for the beak blocks?? Pattern Basket designs great quilts. I have a few. I also keep every scrap of Fig Tree fabric, even back when she designed fabric with another designer. I also have a kit I have not used yet. I won’t be making birds, but yours are sure to be darling and Eva will love it!

That’s adorable quilt block and will make a very sweet quilt. Yes, shopping at home is the best place to start and repurposing some of those fabric collections that went with projects that aren’t part of the plan anymore.

That is a darling quilt block! How great to shop at home. I don’t buy many kits but the ones from Fat Quarter Shop are generous with the fabric. I have a lot of leftovers from a 2009 BOM–a UFO I do want to finish this year! Have fun with your Fig Tree fabrics 😊

Cute block. I made the 2011 fat quarter shop mystery block quilt. The blocks for that quilt were also very complicated. I gave the finished quilt to my mom, she loved it. I can’t wait to see your finished bird quilt.

What a pretty block and great idea to use up the BOM fabric! I’ve found that has happened a couple times where I love the fabric but the pattern not so much 😂 Can’t wait to see your progress on this one 😉

That’s a pretty birdie!
I too stalled on that 2011 BOM until I saw the finished quilts on the internet. I’ve finished all the blocks but haven’t put the top together yet. In my mind, it will be a quilt for my first granddaughter if such person ever exists.
