I have had my iPod for several years. There are more elaborate versions available now, but since mine is perfectly serviceable, I decided that I am not ready to upgrade at this time. So what's the problem?
Well, when I got this iPod, I had a Mac computer. All my tunes were downloaded on this Mac. I don't have a Mac computer anymore. I now have a Dell laptop. And any of you who know about iPods know that if you plug your Mac oriented iPod into a PC, you have to re-format it, and thereby lose everything that you have previously downloaded.
You have to start over with a clean blank slate.
I have not wanted to do that, since it takes hours and hours to download a CD collection to an iPod, not to mention all the iTunes I purchased that now don't show up anymore in my iTunes library. Time consuming and frustrating to the max.
But this past weekend I decided to do it. See the adorable French General sachet bag in the picture above? (Thanks Carrie!) Well, it is the perfect size to put my iPod in. This was the impetus I needed to bite the bullet and start over again with my iPod.
How do you store your CDs? It can be a real issue if you have a large collection. About six or eight years ago, I got rid of all the plastic cases that our CDs were stored in and put them into four CD binders. I have one for classical music, one for jazz music, one for rock music and one smaller one for Christmas music.
It is a great storage solution, since it takes up far less space than dealing with all the CDs in their plastic boxes. However, you still have to keep them somewhat organized so you can find what you are looking for and of course, you have to actually *put them back* when you are finished listening to them. Neither one of those things is my family very good at. After a party, for instance, we have stacks of CDs to return to the binders, and it often doesn't happen.
So, the idea of storing ALL our favorite CDs on an iPod seems brilliant to me. We have two iPod docking stations in our house, and all you have to do is mount your iPod on it, choose the album (or Playlist) you want and listen away. The speakers are made by Bose, so the sound is really good.
Good idea, huh? I am all for simplifying things and this is one option. So, I better get back to my downloading….

I am an iPOD fan, too! We also have the same storage binders and the same problem. It starts off organized, and then no one wants to put the cds away!

Love the docking station!
We have a MAC and a PC…our solution is storing our music on our computers and on an external hard drive. That way if you get rid of the computer your music is backed up on the external, no loss of music, no time spent re-importing cds. Most externals are formatted to work with both MACs and PCs and are relatively cheap. Hope that helps!

So… here is my question: Do you no longer have that Mac computer? If you don’t, i’m sorry. I feel your pain. Been there. Done that. If you do you can probably download all the music stored there onto a Data disc. I now have all my music (and Audiobooks) on an external drive that I connect to my laptop every time I need to upload something new. iTunes looks for the external drive and everything is fine. I also burn everything on DVDs as a bkup. So if the external drive dies (as it has done in the past) I have the data discs (the dvd discs) with 4 gig of music and books each. Currently my whole music collection takes about 8 DVDs and my audiobook collection is probably another 10 discs. Rippng the music off the CD’s is SOOOOO time consuming I can’t do it again. Some of the stuff comes from CD’s I no longer have because they were scratched or broken. I would be so upset if I lost the bkups. Good Luck!

I don’t have an iPod but I’m about to bite the bullet. I love the French General case – it’s perfect! And the CD organizing suggestion is the best. I’m off to find some CD ‘binders’. I have a lot to organize!

I have one of those teeny tiny little Ipods that Vann bought me a while back. I downloaded a few songs, then went one to other things. Like you say, it takes forever to download them. Also the earphones won’t stay in my ears so I need to get some new earphones.
I’ve been looking for a good way to store my CDs. I had this tower/lazy susan-type thing that wasn’t working so I got rid of it. Now my CDs are all stacked in my sewing room and office. I’m going to think about the binder thing.
My only question to you is: why in the world get you go from a Mac to a PC. I’ll never go back.

I got a Nano for Christmas and have been exploring this whole new world. But I feel a huge need to have a carrying case for the little guy. I can’t cope with tangled cords! I have a pattern I wanted to try… but FG! That looks like a good way to go too!

We have been CD-less for about 10 years now. We started off just selling our cds – at the time there wasn’t a digital storage solution large enough to rip all of those cds to. We did it because we were constantly moving and having to move them all the time was daunting.
Fast forward to 2010. We now have all of our music on an external drive linked to our network. This allows any of our computers to be able to access the music so that each of us can make our own playlits, etc.
I am the only one with an ipod though. My husband tried to have one and he is just not into them. I do have several docks around the house and an fm transmitter for my car – but I don’t use that as much. I take my music seriously 🙂

Nicole, when you say it takes hours and hours to rip your cd’s, I hope you’re referring to your collection as a whole, because it shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes for each one. Yes, it can be overwhelming, but if you want tunes, it must be done. 🙂 Get yourself an external hard drive to store them on, so you have them if your computer crashes. Also, be sure to burn your downloads on cd’s so you have hard copies. That way you don’t lose what you buy from itunes. It’s definately not a fun task setting up your new itunes on the new computer, but you’ll really enjoy it once you do. Just do a little each night and it’ll be done in no time. Good luck!

I recently had a problem with my ipod, I pressed the wrong button and just like that everything was gone. Ahhh
I contacted itunes through apple.com and they restored my purchased songs/tv shows.
Apparently they can only do this 2-3 times.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Nicole, my husband has the same one you have and still uses his for his music. I have the newer one, a birthday gift from him 2 years ago, it has the 30MG memory. It is used for audio books only (I listen to very little music) and I have used over half the memory. I LOVE my ipod. You mentioned that many of your tunes don’t show up on your itunes library anymore? Everything I have ever downloaded including the audio books that I copied to my computer from CD’s to load on my ipod are there except the ones I have deleted. My point being that if you downloaded them from itunes, even though they were on a different computer, they should still show in your online library and you should be able to transfer them. But you would have lost anything you uploaded on your own and that is indeed a long drawn out process. BUT, well worth the time when you finally make yourself sit down and do it. I really adore the case you have for yours, it is wonderful.
