It’s All Put Away

003
Isn't this a crazy picture?  My husband likes to pack away the Christmas ornaments because they are his own special collection.  Each year he buys a few more of these Christopher Radko tree ornaments at the after Christmas sales.  He doesn't trust anyone but himself to carefully wrap and pack up his collection.  Fine with me.  I pack up the other six boxes of stuff and he takes care of the last two.  Heaven forbid he lay them out on the hard stone counter top, he has to use a couple of my quilts for them to rest on while he fondles them and wraps them up in bubble wrap.

Always so excited to get the house all decorated for the holidays, I am ready to pack it all up a couple of days after Christmas.  No waiting for Epiphany around here.  That stuff is going back out to the garage.  I swear my house feels twice as big without the clutter.  My little grand daughter was quite shocked to see everything all packed up though.  When she came into the living room, empty of it's holiday decorations, she put her little hands on her hips and exclaimed in outrage, "Where's Christmas?"

Here is my January mantel, spare and clean.  I love that big key.  I got it at Pottery Barn, and thought it was a great symbol for the New Year.  Keys have always symbolized new opportunities and experiences to me, and how fitting to display it prominently in the New Year.  Hope you all have plenty of exciting new doors to unlock in 2014 too!

  4. Last year, when I broke my wrist, my daughter was in Australia when it came time to de-Christmas the house. Sooooo…… everything got “thrown” into boxes by my hubby and son. I appreciated their effort, but boy what a surprise we had this year when we got the boxes out 🙂

  7. Wow! What lovely ornaments and cheers that your DH wants to put them away himself. I get to do all of that here, but my DH’s ornaments are mostly tiny trains.
Miss E’s posture and comment must have been a hoot to see but I understand her surprise. When Christmas is all packed away, things do look odd for a few days.
I am embarking on the “un-decking the halls” task today while the outdoor temperature high is about 20*F.
    Hugs!

  10. I’m with you on this one. Usually I take stuff down the day after Christmas – but it’s been up since Thanksgiving. It always feels so clean and uncluttered afterward.
I didn’t get around to commenting yesterday, but I love your black and tan squares – those will make that quilt stunning. What a fun way to rectify that mistake! (I probably would have thrown them away in frustration)

  13. What a great collection! I’m sure it brings back a lot of memories when he unpacks them and puts them on the tree. I’m with you, it’s so festive decorating for Christmas, but I have to have everything put away and the house clean before the start of the new year. It just feels like a fresh start!

  16. Outrage indeed! The nerve of you to discard Christmas Nana!! I can picture her doing it, although I’ve never met her. I have my own little Ms. “boss” of the house. 🙂

  19. Your husband has quite the collection! I too collect them, started over 20 years ago…I am the only one that is allowed to touch them…so tell him I can relate! I haven’t put a tree out for two years due to an injury, but next Christmas..look out! (They have their own tree)

  22. So sweet! Tell her ‘next year’ Santa and all his decorations will be back. ;p
I got everything packed and put away this past weekend. I feel the same way as you. It is easier to naviagate the house without all the clutter. ;p

  25. I put all of my Christmas decorations away too. It feels so nice to have the house uncluttered. Now maybe I can start sewing something 😉

  28. That little E is so sweet…the innocence of children is something to behold, for sure.
I think it is great that your husband has his own ornament collection and packs it away himself. We love Christmas around my house too but I’m the only collector of any sorts left. The kids would each choose a special ornament every year when they were home but that has been a couple of years.
I love decorating for the holidays but I also enjoy putting everything away and doing a top-down clean before re-decorating…in much simpler fashion.
I love your fireplace and mantel. That space is so big…ahhhh!
