It’s Good to be Home

It was a fantastic vacation.  We enjoyed the sights, the accommodations, the food, and especially the wine.  My only improvements would have been that the weather could have been warmer and my husband could have remembered to bring his jacket.  After a week in southern Spain on the Costa del Sol, my husband and I met up with our honeymooning daughter and our new son in law, and then traveled by car across the country, visiting some major cities, some lovely wineries, and staying mostly at Paradors.  In the late 1920’s, in an effort to encourage tourism, the Spanish government created a network of hotels called paradors.  The majority of paradors are installed in remodeled historic buildings such as convents and palaces, but there are a few that are quite modern facilities which have been built on a historic site, such as a Roman ruin.  All of the paradors at which we stayed had first rate restaurants serving wonderful regional dishes.  I feel that I have literally eaten my way across Spain, enjoying marvelous seafood in the south, fabulous grilled meats in the middle of the country, tapas everywhere, and the most amazingly good red wines on a daily basis.  The wines are not only good, but extremely well priced compared to equivalent California selections.

Surprisingly, after consuming vast quantities of delicious foods and wine, I find that I have not gained a pound, undoubtedly due to all the walking we did throughout the trip.  Does shivering burn calories?  I did my share of that, as the weather ranged from the high 60’s at the warmest to freezing (!) at the coldest.

I will definitely be sharing more about my wonderful trip with you in future posts, but for now, jet lag has me in a firm grip and my cozy bed is beckoning me….
