Jelly Bellies

My talented blogging friend Darlene has a recent post on a Spring Snowballs quilt she has completed.  It has been extremely warm where she lives, and she wanted a cool reminder of Spring.  Please check out her site for a photo and description of her project; it is just beautiful.  Her post jogged my memory, that hidden away in a project box somewhere, I had a snowball block project waiting to be completed.  Since life has recently gotten in the way of me actually being able to sit down and sew anything, I have been feeling guilty that my quilting-themed blog hasn’t actually had much in the way of quilt posts of late.

These blocks are the very simple Snowball block, consisting of a center large square to which four smaller corner squares are attached.  Once you trim the excess fabric out of the way, you have your Snowball.  This is a great project for a beginning quilter, and my daughter Sara, currently has a Snowball quilt project in the works using the Poetry collection of fabric by Moda’s April Cornell.

My version of the snowball block, alternates the color of the center squares and corner squares, some being dark with light corners, others being light with dark corners.  For added interest, in this version, the blocks are set on point for a slightly different look.  My project is from a Miss Rosie pattern called Jelly Bellies.  And I really will be finishing it as soon as things calm down around here.

  1. Nicole, thank you for the very nice compliment. When I saw that you mentioned me by name it was like seeing my name in lights. teehee
Your Jelly Belly blocks are great – it’s a project that’s been on the backburner for far too long. One to consider doing in the near future.

  3. What beautiful work! And I love the fabrics you’ve chosen. They somewhat remind me of the reproduction Civil War color schemed fabrics.

  5. I love you blocks. They look really complex and when I read that they were simply snowball blocks I was caught by surprise.
So glad you went to the dinner. Everything looked heavenly!

  7. That’s a cute quilt. That would be another good thing to do with all the charm squares. Great idea with setting them on point. You get a little star effect with the blocks as well.
It’s funny how you can put something away and completely forget about it.
