Jellystone, Revisited

Jellystone

Well, I promised myself that this would be my year to finish more full sized quilts, and I am off to a grand beginning!  No, that isn't my quilt or my finish.  Give me a minute to explain.

The quilt shown above is one made by Carrie Nelson, of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.  It is a pattern she designed called Jellystone.  Back in 2007 I took a class to make this quilt from Carrie, and honestly, I didn't fare very well.  Something about it just foiled me at every step.  The bear paw units are fairly complex, or seemed so to my feeble brain.

Here is what the first unit is supposed to look like:

And here is mine:

Oh dear.

And here is what one quarter of the entire Bear Paw unit is supposed to look like:

How cool is that?  But here is mine:

Gracious.  No matter how I tried, I just could not wrap my mind around how to put this block together.   Even though I loved the finished quilt and wanted one so badly.  So, I ended up putting my project box away and not touching it for five and a half years.

This was the momentous week that my Jellystone project saw the light of day again.  (Imagine the music from 2001 when the apes discover the obelisk).  Yes.  I can do this.

001

I unpacked the box and spent awhile examining the contents and trying to make sense of all the components.  Notice the time on the clock.

003

Units assembled and organized.  Notice the time on the clock.  Nevermind, I did it!!!  I now know what I am doing, and have my units all set to make into blocks.

004

Ta da!!! And seriously, if any of you notice some unit turned the wrong way 'round,  DO NOT TELL ME.  Or I will have to kill myself.

I am so happy right now!  And don't worry, I haven't abandoned Hill Country Baskets.  I am just taking a little break from the tedium of making those darn basket blocks.  I cannot live without multi-tasking.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.  I'll be sewing, hope you will too!

  1. Those are beautiful colors you have chosen. And sometimes a project just has to marinate in a box in a closet for awhile before it’s ready to be worked on. Believe me, I know.

  3. Your fabric colors are gorgeous. I just finished Double Duty from the same book and it turned out really great. One day I’ll do Jellystone, too. Have a great weekend.

  5. Sometimes things just have to sit there for a while (years!) before they work out.
    Super color combinations as always.

  9. Applause!! This is one jazzy, scrappy, delicious quilt and will delight your heart evermore. Cheers for the Little Engine’s “I think I can” attitude that lead you to bring Jellystone back into the light of day. Yabba dabba do!! Okay, sorry I couldn’t resist that.
    Hugs!

  17. I love this quilt…I’m glad you’re working on it! Good feeling, huh? 🙂 I’ve always wanted to make a Bear Paw.

  19. I just pulled out an old quilt last night that I had started 3 years ago. It is scrappy reds, but it has taken me so long because i don’t want same fabrics to touch. I love all the progress you did, and it inspires me to keep working on mine.

  21. Way to go! I only see beauty! I too tried a bear paw and wanted to claw my own eyes out so I put it away for another year, (lifetime). Maybe when I grow some patience.

  23. This one was one of the first Miss Rosie’s patterns I ever bought (I bought True Blue at the same time). Then it came out in the book Carrie published a few years ago and I got distracted. It kept getting pushed back in the to be made pile. I imagined mine in some Kansas Trouble line. I love the scrappy feel of it.
Sometimes you just need to let the knowledge simmer and it will all eventually click.

  25. You always make me laugh out loud!! I appreciate the visuals, especially the ticking clock…I thought I was the only one who spent hours just sorting :0 I think the theme this year is the year of finishes, so you’ve definitely inspired me to dig some oldies but goodies out! Can’t wait to see your progress 🙂 PS – I’m another multi-tasker too!

  27. I love Bear’s Paw blocks but they are complicated enough without that extra piecing of the anchor “paw” center. Carrie does like lots of little pieces. Congrats on your wonderful progress–I am impressed it only took a few hours.

  29. I love that quilt and the fabric!!!! I have been there with your block issues. Sometimes are brains just need some time off…in years to get it right. 🙂

  31. lol, i have dreaded projects put away for similar reasons…everytime i turned around i was confused and making mistakes. it’s funny how those projects haunt us. good for you for pulling it out! ;p
me? i’m hoping that the projects i have put away will rot in quilter’s hell or sew themselves! ;p

  33. I love your story! Glad to see that you can make these kind of mistakes too, albeit 5 years ago. I started an easy quilt last january, and boy, did I do SOMETHING wrong! THere’s only 2 alternating blocks and they don’t line up at all. (Like as if one set was measured at 2 inch strips, and the other at 2 1/2 inch strips) I’m so disappointed. It has been put away since last February until an idea pops into my head for a solution.

  35. I have been making that same “problem” unit for the King’s Corner pattern in Monique Dillards “Fat Quarter Winner” book. I looked at the Jellystone pattern, and they are constructed the same, with the exception that Monique has us draw the 45° angles on the large rectangle square, instead of the pieced unit. Would make the drawing of the lines easier, I think. You’re going to have another beautiful quilt on your hands! Beautiful colors.

  37. As always, you’ve chosen beautiful fabrics for a beautiful quilt…Jellystone is another winner! Also, could you tell me who the designer/manufacturer is on your “Shiloh” pattern? Can’t find it anywhere. Thanks so much.

  39. YOU did it!!! And they look great! Man, I tell you your post made me feel much better – because I have had projects that I swear have gone the same way and I end up banging my head on my desk – each time I reach for the seam ripper….. you’d think I’d turn out the lights and walk away for a while but no – I keep on going and keep on making mistakes – you made me laugh – because I could really relate! Your quilt is going to look great! I like the fabric choices!

  41. I love the colors you’ve chosen for this pattern. They remind me of country and woods – just the place to find bear paws!

  45. So glad you were able to figure this block out. It’s going to be a fabulous quilt, and you will be so proud of yourself because you finished it.

  47. This made me laugh because it reminded me of a round robin I was in years ago. Most of the participants wanted peel and stick appliqué blocks, I requested Bear Paw blocks. Groans all around. Like how could I be soooo mean. Too hard they cried. So you see you are not alone!
    Cheers

  49. You should be so proud of yourself for finishing up Jellystone! As many have commented, you have five years of experience & skill building which served you well! Congratulations on another stunning quilt!

  51. Yay! Good for you!.. I’m still laughing at your 2001 A Space Odyssey music choice!
I’m right there with you on the multi tasking feeling. I started a new scrap quilt, like I needed to do that!

  53. Well done! I hate it when no matter what you try nothing seems to work and you can’t get your head around the block. You’ve worked it out now it’ll go together quickly.
