Judy To the Rescue

If you all don't have this book, you might want to look into getting it.  I was thinking it was 101 quilt blocks, but for goodness sake, it it 501!  The instructions for making these 501 blocks are given in at least four or five sizes.  I would guess that at least 400 of them come in the six inch finished size.  Which is helpful to anyone who is making the Magic of Christmas Sew Along that Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings is sponsoring.  Every week she comes out with a pattern or two for the project.  She is promising a total of 25 block patterns before Christmas.  Her quilt is all in red and white, but I decided to mix it up and make two blocks for each pattern, one in red, and the other in green.

Some of Lisa's blocks are pretty complex, and I have switched them out for blocks in Judy Hopkins book, which you see above.

If you read my post from yesterday, you will know that I had a beastly time with Block 10.  Block 10 has 32 half square triangle units that finish at one inch.  I goofed and made my blocks one inch unfinished.  We are not going to talk about that.  What I did have that was usable was a two and a half inch star block that was supposed to go in the center.

It looks a little wonky, but that is what seems to happen to me when I work with pieces of fabric that are only half an inch square.  It will be ok, I promise.

I browsed though Judy's book to see if there was a six inch block pattern that featured a two and half inch square center unit.  Sure enough.

How about that?  I really liked this block, and thought I could use my tiny little star block in the center of it.  I got to work, and this is what I ended up with:

Pretty cute I think.  Let me tell you  though, this six inch quilt block has been tortured.  I mean TORTURED.  With steam and spray starch and a bit of tugging.  Not everything lines up perfectly, but that is how it is sometimes.  A man going by in a bus won't notice.   I was sick of fiddling with this block for the time being, but did go ahead and make it again in red.

How did the rest of you do with the dreaded Block 10?  I know I prefer my version (thanks to Judy) with only twelve tiny half square triangles as compared to the 32 in Lisa's block.

  1. I love your block! I was reading her pattern and she mentioned that she used 1″ triangle paper for it, so I’m not sure that you were off in your measurements…not sure what happened! I’ll have to make a note on my pattern to remember, IF I ever get around to making this one (there are so many patterns I’ve printed off this year, it was a good year for free quilts!)All I can say is a big THANK YOU for testing all these patterns for me! LOL!

  7. Your block looks really good Nicole. IN the big picture , it is going to be just perfect. I have this book and I refer to it all the time. It is like a quilt block encyclopedia. Very good resource book in my opinion.

  16. I love what you did with your block! I am also making these blocks and just did block 10 last night. I used a method for the triangle blocks that makes 8 HST at a time and I made it a bit large then squared them up to 1 1/2″ blocks and it worked really well. The star was a little more difficult though, that is a very tiny star! I have been making the outside triangles a little large though so it is easier to square up and that helps, except when the finished star is 2-1/2″ Oh, my! My block looks good enough to me though and only took about an hour and a half to make. I am using 2 colors in my blocks – red and gold and loving them!
