Juggling

Eggs

No, I am not about to juggle these eggs, but it sure feels like I am multitasking all the time lately!

Is it just me, or is this summer simply racing by?  Every potentially lazy, relaxing day turns into a whirl wind of activity by noon.  All I want to do is sit out on the chaise lounge reading or hide out in my sewing room and sew something—but it just doesn’t happen.  My library books are due already, but still unread; my ten different quilting projects are in the exact same stage of being unfinished as they were three weeks ago.  What’s up?  Is this typical of what happens during summer?  Are we by nature more industrious at this time of year, therefore more sedentary activities fall by the wayside until the weather turns nasty?

Is sure isn’t as if I haven’t been busy.  On Thursday I found out that I am entertaining eight people on Saturday night, two of whom will be house guests for the weekend.  (Yes, that is today, so this will be a short post).  Now, I LOVE entertaining, and planning the menu and cooking the food is dead easy for me.  Decorating the table?  Piece of cake.  But *cleaning the house* …..  Oh brother.  There is nothing like having company to make me look at my house with a critical eye.

My poor husband has been my willing slave in the monumental cleaning activities I proposed.  Lucky for me, because I couldn’t do most of them myself.  The curtains?  Up went the big ladder, down came the curtains for cleaning, and of course, up they had to go again.  The slip cover on the sofa?  Off it came and into the wash with it.  It sure came off a lot easier than it went back on, is all I can say.  The carpet in the family room?  OMG.  You should have SEEN the water from the rug shampooer—-ick.

So the house is clean, but now I have to go cook!  Talk to you all tomorrow!

  1. A good post that has got me thinking. Perhaps I’ll have time (while getting ready for tonight’s dinner guests, no less!) to blog on this topic.
I always enjoy your posts, Nicole. And your photos are terrific. Yours is one of my daily reads.

  3. I have this problem in the summer time too. Fall and winter are much more of the inside – get things done seasons for me. In the summer, I just can’t seem to settle on anything long enough to get finished.

  5. I am feeling your pain as well….lazy, my butt 😀 I think with summer due to the lack of a routine (of school hours and such), it seems we try to fit more into a day with longer hours, but finding time to sleep in as well 😀 I’m looking forward to back to school, mainly due to the stricter routing of a day verses the “whatever” feeling of summer days 😀

  9. Nicole don’t overdo it so as to not enjoy your weekend. I can’t say I’ve ever gone to visit some one and checked for dust on their curtains, lol. Your guests will be much more interested in your company than the state of your house. Relax and enjoy them:-)

  13. I don’t think it’s just this summer. I think this whole year is flying by. I don’t know why that is! I honestly and truly feel like I just put away my Christmas decorations…although what I really put away this week was all my patriotic Fourth of July stuff. I was in my attic (on a rare, cool evening) and noting that that next big thing to decorate for is fall/Halloween. How can it be almost autumn already?
Your house must look and smell fabulous now! Doesn’t it just make you feel great? And give your sweet husband an extra kiss. He’s a nice guy like mine…and mine does more housework than me, sometimes!

  15. My thoughts exactly! We recently heard that rather unexpected company – family we hadn’t seen in YEARS from far away – was coming our direction. I went into overdrive and cleaned everything in sight. It was tiring but felt so good to have my house so clean. We had a great time with them over the few days they were here! That cleaning spree was good because I was ready for the family baby shower I hostessed here for my dear daughter-in-law yesterday. Now, to keep the house that clean so I don’t have to into marathon mode next time! My quilt for the shower yesterday wasn’t done and I had to give an IOU, which I hated doing. It did give a chance to get some input from my sweet DIL before the quilt is too far into the works. I guess we need to just take one day at a time and hope that someday we will get a day to relax, read, sew or whatever we want to do. Until then, we can dream – can’t we?

  17. I think we can be too critical of how clean our house is. I’ve learned that all I really need to do is tidy and put a few things away, of course I make sure the bathroom has been wiped down. Cleaning the curtains, that sounds a bit extreme. Enjoy your guests.

  19. Your life sounds just like mine, never enough hours in everyday. It is winter in Australia at the moment and I still don’t get time to sew, maybe a few very late nights are needed in my home to acheive a few things that have been on the back burner for a while. I am with you on the house work, everything else is easy.LOL
Hope you had a good weekend with all your entertaining.

  21. I know exactly what you mean about the summer – where have the days gone, and what have I done??
As for the cleaning, I do the same thing. You know no one will notice, but you feel better just the same.
