Lapel Stick Winners

002
I found a new use for the Lapel Stick!  I rubbed it all over Ozzie's tummy and put him up on the back of a chair, and he stayed put for an hour!

Please do not report me to the SPCA, I am kidding, don't you know?

The Lapel Stick winners are Dietra Mixer, Candace of Squash House Quilts, and Kay Mc, who is going to try using it on those dumb tags on the back of your blouse that always want to stick up.  I am so going to use my Lapel Stick on those wrap type tops that are always cut too low.  So much better than using a safety pin!

So, you lucky winner girls, send me your addresses, and I will mail off your Lapel Sticks to you.  I probably won't get to do it until the weekend though, since I never have a spare minute with this new job.

Speaking of which, the new job is going well.  I have it all down pat now.  And I love the patients.  I have one old guy who is mostly deaf, who comes in for weekly blood tests, who shouts at me at the top of his lungs, and always so cheerfully.  I adore the way he bellows his greetings, and tries to make jokes, always at an ear splitting decibel.  And of course, I have to bellow back at him, to be sure he hears me.  Today I was doing a blood test on him, and we were bantering back and forth at the top of our lungs, and I could hear the entire waiting room of patients cracking up at us.  Lovely patients.  There is one old lady who was born in 1914 (do the math) who totally has all her marbles, and is still managing to get some enjoyment out of her life, despite her ailments and extremely advanced age.  She obviously embraces fashion, so we have a lot in common.  Today she was all dressed in red.  Red coat, red hat, red blouse, and yes—-red LIPSTICK!   I hope if I live that long, I still can eke some pleasure out of my life.

Mother in law update:  my dear MIL is doing ok.  She has been transferred to a convalescent hospital, where she is trying to get enough strength back in order to go home.  She needs to be able to stand and take a few assisted steps to the bathroom before she can be released.  Sounds easy, but at the age of 90, and after abdominal surgery, it ain't.  All she can talk about is "I surely want to go home".

And you know what?  All I can think about is my little grand baby.  My mind is so active, dreaming of home schooling scenarios, imagining her in my arms, thinking of how proud my son in law and daughter will be– oh how my mind dances from one vision to another!  I've been singing in the car, all the lullabys and  preschool songs I can remember.  Must be a sight for the other drivers on the freeway, me croaking "Hush little baby, don't say a word.  Grandma's gonna buy you a mockin' bird".   I have also been exploring Montessori websites, dreaming that I convert a room in my house into a preschool.  I used to teach that age group, and would go back to it in a heart beat.  Time is passing slowly for me, and I cannot wait to get to the day when I am with my daughter and her family all the time!  So many of you friends have emailed me to say how having grandchildren has changed your lives.  I am so inspired by the stories you have shared!  I will be there too one day soon!

  1. Thanks for the good laugh as I imagined Ozzie glued in place! I know you’d never glue him to a quilt so it had to be a joke. Besides, the quilt would just be dragged along wherever Ozzie chose to go. Not good for the quilt!
    Congratulations to the winners!
Cheers that your job is going well and that you enjoy it so much!
Bless your MIL’s heart! Recovery ain’t easy or fun. Please remind her she doesn’t have to stand up straight until it doesn’t hurt to do so. She can lean forward a bit. Hope she has one of those excellent Roll-ator walkers with the seat. My mother’s walker was red, FIL’s is blue.
Ah, how sweet it is to imagine the joy the coming baby girl will add to your life and to the world!
    Hugs!

  3. Congrats to the winners! It’s nice to hear that you love your job and your MIL is doing ok. I can just hear the excitement in your post regarding your baby granddaughter’s arrival and future! It is a very exciting time, but just wait until she’s here. You are going to be in heaven!!

  5. WHOO HOO!!! I won!!! Thank you so much, Miss Nicole! Reading your blog everyday is gift enough, but winning fun treats puts it over the top! 🙂
And thanks for sharing about your mother-in-law. And the other sweet older folks you’re around now. I have such a soft spot for older people. So precious and sweet and heartbreaking. Best wishes as you care for her and all of them!

  7. You just wait until that granddaughter gets here, you won’t believe it – there’s truly nothing like being a grandparent. We had our first grandchild (granddaughter)in August 2010, and she’s the light of our lives. We get to see her every week, and she has her grandpa wrapped around her finger, well – really both of us. We delight in every minute that we get to see her, and miss her when we don’t!

  9. Good to hear your MIL is getting care in a convalescent hospital. That has to be a relief for all of you. Your job sounds rewarding and must be a place you want to go each day! Ozzie looks comfy and probably has himself ‘glued’ to that chair back!! Keep your hands on the steering wheel when you’re singing “Itsty Bitsy Spider!!”

  11. Love the picture of Ozzie!!! What a cleaver way to use the glue stick – if it were only possible!! We have an Airdale – Oliver – and even though the size is different I just love seeing the pictures and antics of your dogs. They are sooooo much like Oliver – who does not consider himself a dog.

  13. Yippeee – thanks, Nicole! Address is on it’s way! I’m so glad your job is going well! I love working with the elderly – it takes a little “figuring out” for each one’s personality but once you do, you’ve made a real friend – and they so appreciate it! And who can blame your for having “grandbaby” on the mind all the time – I’m so happy for you!
    Cheers!

  15. I’m butting in to chime in on your preschool thought. My daughter is in a preschool founded around the Reggio Emilia philosophy (she’s at the Lucy School http://www.lucyshool.com if you want to see what some of their curriculum entails, and the best place to learn about RE is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggio_Emilia_approach )
It’s project-based, child-led learning. For instance, one of the kids asked about his shadow and the teacher said “Who wants to learn about shadows?” They all did and so they spent the next few weeks loooking at it from all disciplines. For math and science they built a sundial, talked about how it worked, and then three weeks later talked about why it *still* worked. For language skills they brainstormed together to write poems and songs about their shadows. For art they did shadow puppet shows and put objects on black construction paper and let the sun bleach the paper around the objecs, thus “painting with the sun.”
The environment is considered one of their teachers. They go for walks in the woods and plant their own vegetables to have with lunch. They are engaged and involved in their own learning every chance possible.
Dude, she’s three and a half, I wish I’d gotten to do stuff like that. If you could have studied gravity by covering balls in paint and rolling them down a ramp to make art wouldn’t you have wanted to learn about gravity more? 🙂
Anyway, I’m babbling *again* but if it strikes your fancy there’s plenty of time to get better acquainted with it, it would be *awesome* for homeschooling.

  17. Thanks so much for drawing my name. Can’t wait to give the lapel stick a try. Double stick tape just doesn’t work very well. Grandbabies are the best. I was just like you when our 1st one was due & now we have 6. I got to be in the delivery room for four of them & that was the best gift I ever received.

  19. Being a grandparent is the best!!! I remember when our first grandson was tiny. The first time we went over to their house and he saw us and his little face lit up and he smiled and reached for me….my heart hasn’t been the same since!

  25. My mama is one of those born in 1914 and still having her marbles. She drops something on the floor and bends over and picks it up. She was fussing today that she is exhausted after doing her laundry.
She is an amazing lady. Tells everyone that I wil not let her live by herself. Until this past fall, she lived alone and drove herself around her small town. Her 1993 car has under 20,000 miles on it.

  29. Yes, Ozzie is stuck in place.
And you know Nicole, my granddaughter slept in my arms for 2 1/2 hours today and I wasn’t in the least bit bored. I was dreaming of all those things and enjoying her breath on my cheek. Just wait!!

  33. How many times has Ozzie fallen off the chair, lol. I even feel excited about your becoming a grandmother. You can’t explain it until it’s happened to you. I think it’s the reward for having kids.
