Now that my 64 Log Cabin Blocks are finished, I have been playing around with some various layouts. The first one pictured above is how I have been arranging them up on the design wall as they were sewn. I was making the blocks four at a time, and laying them out this way helped me keep track of how many blocks I had left to sew. Sorry for the blurry picture, there was something dirty on my camera lens.
This second layout doesn't look much different, but notice how the light sections are highlighted more than the dark by placing four light sections together. I do like the way the dark strips form kind of a border on the outer edge of the quilt top.
Now we have something completely different. This chevron design is kind of interesting. I like it probably because it is such a nice change from the four block quadrant layout.
I'll have some more layouts in the next few days. Feel free to weigh in on what layouts you think are most effective or pleasing.

So far I vote layout 2…. But will reserve judgement to see what else you come up with! 😀

This is hard. They are all good in their own way. Of these 3 I think I would go with #2 as my first choice.

Love them all bu from these layouts I think #2 is the best. But what do you think of this ‘star’ layout I’ve seen on the moda instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/BBc0WSMzPS_/?taken-by=modafabrics I think that’s truely amazing.

Love them all but think I prefer # 2. Isn’t it interesting how log cabin blocks can morph into completely different looks? There is a great new Log Cabin book out that I purchased from FQS called I Love Log Cabins by that Patchwork Place. Several of the girls from FQS contributed quilts, along with Carrie Nelson (I know she is one of your faves). You might want to check it out!
It will look beautiful no matter what you choose!

I’m temporarily going with layout #2. But the star in the upper right corner of Hildy’s link is very interesting! Does Sara have a preference in layouts or is she giving you carte blanche?

I like #2 from these three possible layouts.
As yet, I haven’t clicked the link in Hildy’s reply, but I put my first Log Cabin quilt together with a star formed in the center.
In picture #3, if the blocks in the lower half of the quilt were turned upside down, a diamond pattern would be formed.
Have fun playing with the block layouts. Will you ask for Sara’s opinion?
Hugs!

I like #2 because of the way the dark fabric forms a border, as you said. but might depend on what you are adding as a border. The chevron design is also appealing and I think would look good on a bed. It has a more modern look because it is unexpected.

I think the reason #2 is so appealing is because the blocks are better defined.
#3 is very energizing, isn’t it?

Wow, I was instantly drawn to number 3. Even after enlarging the photos I found #3 the most appealing of the three.

I used the chevron design, off center, for the last log cabin quilt I made. It was for my grandson and I wanted something a little more modern for him. I’ve seen log cabin blocks set so the setting creates a star. I want to do that if/when I make another log cabin.

Now the fun part begins Nicole….playing with the blocks. There are so many ways to lay out and can’t wait to see what the final choice will be :)))

I like your blocks and all three layouts. You can do so much with log cabin blocks, I will be watching to see which one you chose

I keep coming back to look at these pictures. I love how the first two look so very different just by how you arrange the blocks. This is going to be a beauty!
