Looking Glass, A Finish

IMG_2059

I managed to finish Looking Glass, but not get a very good picture of it.  Looking Glass is a pattern by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.  The fabric I used was mostly Old Glory Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings, but I tossed in some Minick and Simpson, French General and odd pieces from my stash as well.

This quilt went together easily, and is a great stash buster for those of you who have fabric you want to use   up.  The colors I chose aren't really my thing, so this quilt will be a Christmas gift for someone who I think will enjoy it.

It makes a good sized quilt too.  This will go on a queen sized be and will be plenty big enough to drape over the sides.  I am thinking of using a wool batting in this one.  Have any of you done that?  Does it quilt well?  Keep you toasty?

  1. Looking Glass turned out spectacularly! I love it! What a wonderful gift this will be. I’ve heard so many good things about wool batting. But I’m reluctant to try it because I make my quilts to be used and loved.

  4. Your quilt is very pretty, Nicole! Someone will hit the jackpot this Christmas. I love Dream Wool batting, it is warmer than cotton and it’s thicker so it adds nice dimension to the quilting. And best of all – machine wash and dry – comes out of the dryer with fewer crinkles than cotton, but it makes a very nice quilt.

  7. Applause, applause!! Looking Glass is lovely and there is some very lucky someone who will welcome it and love it come Christmastime.
I’ve never used wool batting so cannot helpfully answer that question. Lisa D.’s comment about Dream Wool batting is good to know.
    Hugs!

  10. Very patriotic, just in time for July 4. I’ve wondered about wool batting myself so very interested in the comments on it here.

  13. Great quilt!
I have requested wool in two quilts so far. The wool allows for the quilting to show up more. I haven’t found that it makes to quilt too warm – one is on our bed now. The one that has been washed (machine) crinkled, but i don’t think as much as if it had a cotton batt. I like the look.

  19. Good job on this finish. I always seem to like the chain running through quilts.

  22. Love, Love, Love wool. I put it in the king size that is on our bed so that we could turn over under it. Cool in summer, warm in winter (it breathes). Spring for Quilter’s Dream wool – it is so worth it (voice of experience). Love this quilt top. You are soooo prolific.

  28. Beautiful quilt even though the colors aren’t your usual ones! I’m interested in what people have to say about the wool batting, too. So far, it sounds very positive.

  31. Love, love, love wool batting. I have had some bearding issues with it on a couple quilts, but not every quilt I’ve used it in. I toss it in the washer and dryer with no problems. Most of my quilts that are on our bed get weekly dryer refreshes mainly to get all the little white Dalmatian hair off.

  34. What a beautiful quilt that is! I can’t believe that you have another one checked off your list in June!!! I love wool batting. Absolutely love it. I wish all my quilts had been quilted with it!

  37. Your new quilt is lovely. I only ever use wool batting (Matilda’s Own 100% wool) – I think I should support our Australian farmers and it’s also beautiful to quilt. I sleep with one quilt during our summer and it’s not too hot. I have two on the bed for winter and I’m very comfy.

  40. It’s beautiful, and the colors are too. I’m sure the wool batting will work well for quilting and result in a warm quilt.

  43. I love wool batting and have used it many times! While it does keep you warm, it’s now like an old wool blanket – it’s not that warm. The surprise is that it’s almost more comfortable in the summer because it’s so light and it breathes. It’s the perfect topper for another quilt or blanket in colder weather.
I prefer the Harriet Hargrave Heirloom to the Dream Wool as its a little lighter-weight and washes up gorgeously. One caveat there – it can go in the dryer on heat even though the instructions on the package say not to. (I only happened to read the instructions after I’d used it in about four quilts… lol) It shrinks a bit more and puckers beautifully, then it relaxes back down a bit. With the washer and the dryer, it gets as soft and squishy as well-felted wool.

  46. Great quilt…has that traditional quilt look that I enjoy. I have never tried wool batting but after reading all the comments I may just have to in the near future. Thanks for asking the question.
