Lovely Blog, Lovely Person

QFE 058

You just meet the nicest people through blogging!  During my most recent stash sale, I was contacted by a lovely woman who lives in England about something I had for sale.  Typically my heart sinks when I am asked to ship anything internationally, due to the high cost of postage.  My customer "Gertie" and I put our heads together and figured out that if we packaged the items just right, we could squeeze them into a small Flat Rate mailing envelope for the cost of $16.95 instead of $48.95 for the box.  Fine minds think alike!  Her fabric arrived safely, as she pictured above, and the two of us exchanged a few emails.

Gertie has recently started a blog of her own, which I invite you to check out.  It is called "Quilting For England".  In her most recent email to me, she suggested I have a look at something she had written called "Things I Learned From Nicole", which both honored and tickled me.  She has been a blog follower of mine for years, and did a little compilation of some of my posts that she found instructional.

One post that brought back a lot of memories was the one describing my disappointment in my pink and brown blocks for Miss Rosie pattern called Raise the Roof.  My fabrics did not provide enough contrast and despite a ton of time and effort, I abandoned this project.

I am actually thrilled to have been reminded of this quilting mishap, because I have since pulled together some awesome blues and browns that will give me the contrast effect I need.  I will finish this quilt!

Oh yes!  This will work!

  1. I look forward to visiting Gertie’s new blog! Isn’t it nice to make friends all over the planet that are joined to our hearts from the start by our shared love of fabrics and sewing? Like us tho we’re very nearly a continent’s width apart!!
Raise the Roof is a cute pattern but I can see how easy it is to experience the fabric placement pitfall. Love your new fabric choices! I can just imagine you, Nicole the speed quilting wizard, will have this quilt top finished by Oct. 1 even if you get home from your lovely trip on Sept. 28th! I always stand amazed by your speedy accomplishments.
    Hugs!

  3. I was lucky enough to meet Gertie in person at the FQ Retreat in London this year….where I think everybody twisted her arm so much that she felt morally obliged to start blogging! She’s lovely…you would like her!!!

  5. I popped over to Gertie’s blog and yes, she does have a lovely blog. She summarized her “learning points” from your blog rather nicely. If memory serves, didn’t your Raise the Roof also encounter a doggy accident?
It will be nice to see the new and improved version with the blues and browns. Hope you are still having fun on your trip! May the travel angels be with you!

  7. Gosh Nicole thank you for the lovely post! I am very happy that you found your lovely Raise the Roof pattern again – I’m sure this time all of your blocks will come out pretty! I think before this post I assumed that any pretty fabric would make a pretty block but now I know different.
As soon as I get my Apple Crisp quilt finished (that’s another pattern I found from your blog incidentally), I am going to set to work on something lovely out of your Curio fabric!
