A lot of sewing is happening in my rainy corner of the world. Archie just doesn't understand why I don't want to venture out for our usual morning walks. He's been so disappointed. I've been happy to stay in where it is dry and cozy. As I write this, it is kind of raining/kind of snowing. I am not sure if it has a name, but I would describe it as a mix of rain and snow for sure.
I made the first three of the Mercantile sew-along blocks, and I am having fun playing with my stash of Lori Holt fabrics. I don't think I am going to do the circle appliques, but rather set my low-volume background blocks on the diagonal to get the look of the quilt without the "busy-ness" of the pieced background squares. The blocks are slightly different sizes, but it won't be hard to trim them to all be the same because of the framing that goes around each block.
This week's Moda Blockheads block was a pass for me. I saw a free block on the Laundry Baskets Quilt blog for Edita's "Birthday" sew-along and made it up instead. This is a 6-inch finished block, and I am very pleased with it. I think it is really different.
I am getting the borders on the Flea Market quilt. I attached the two narrow containment borders yesterday and should get the posie border and the outer border on today if I keep my nose to the grindstone. Gosh, it will be satisfying to finish that quilt.
Oh! I finished listening to the audiobook of The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles yesterday. I had actually forgotten the details of the ending and decided to give the audio version a listen after I heard a reviewer say she absolutely despised the ending of the book. I thought it was ok, in that good behavior was rewarded in the end and bad behavior was punished. There were some morally questionable decisions that the characters made that that reviewer may have objected to. All in all, my love for the book remains strong!

I love everything above!! I love bright colors. The blocks are sweet and the Flea Market is looking great!!
I hope your weather calms down a bit. My brother house backs on a hill in San Diego. Covered in ice plant, so I don’t think he has to worry about mud slides. So far just a lot of rushing water down his streets. Other friends up the coast have really suffered some significant wind damage.

You have been busy! Working with such pretty fabrics when the day is rainy/ snowy is a perfect plan. Love your Blockheads block!

Your alternate block is so interesting! I could see an entire quilt made with that block. Poor Archie is missing his walks but I’ll bet he’d be heading back inside once he was feeling the rain. You’re having a productive week with both sewing & reading.

Loving all of the quilts you are working on Nicole.
I live in the So Cal mountains, where we have had about 12-15 inches of snow in the last couple of days. The locals here call the mixture of snow and rain – slush. It’s always messy and very heavy if you have to shovel. Take care and stay warm.

slush is right. I feel sorry for so many people losing everything in the mud and rain.
I am loving that mercantile quilt. I guess the block sizes vary a little bc the original design is to applique them down?
I’m so happy the sun is out today. it is cold but at least it isn’t pouring rain. our backyard is mush and my dog wants to run around and play which only makes more mush. ;p

Nicole, I want to thank you for inspiring me to read more! I am amazed at how much you get done quilting but more impressed by how many books you read! I was reading two books a month for a couple of years but sadly it’s down to less than one. I am a big Stephen King fan and most of his books are 500 pages or more. I wrote down some recommendations you made including the three books by Amor Towles. I’m reading “A Gentleman in Moscow” and absolutely love it. Next up is “Rules of Civility”. I will never be able to read as many books as you but thank you for the inspiration and also getting me away from only reading Stephen King!
