I am so glad to wrap up this project! This is Moda Blockheads 5 a sew-along that will continue on through mid-November, but I have all the blocks I need to make my chosen layout, so it's a finish for me. If you like this layout, the Star Dance pattern is free from My Sew Quilty Life.
I love that I could use up some of the plainer prints in the fabric collection with this setting. They form squares around some of the 12-inch blocks and make a nice effect I think. It is a bit different from a lot of other layouts I have seen and I am so glad I discovered it. How clever to put those different-sized blocks together in such a cohesive setting.
My fabrics are from the Harvest Road collection by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique. She consistently comes out with gorgeous fabric lines and is an "automatic buy" for me!
I am nearly finished with sewing my blocks together. I am considering a border, as I have a good-sized piece of one of the main prints in the line. I'll probably do a narrow containment border in the cream background, and an outer border of the navy floral print below.
I had to take my Bernina 770 in to be serviced. That machine has so many whistles and bells. I am really missing it. Some of the features I love are the thread-cutting mechanism, the needle down option, and the way the presser foot raises a teensy bit when you stop sewing.
I am fortunate to have a backup machine, a Bernina 440 Quilters Edition. This machine isn't as fancy as the 770, but my gosh, it is SO quiet. It just purrs along as I sew. I'll miss her big sister while she is in to be serviced, but they say it should only be two weeks.
I sure haven't had many comments for my past few posts! Are you all alive and well? I think I need to have a little contest to see if anyone is out there besides crickets. Comment on my post today and I'll announce a winner on Friday for the new quilting book "Celebrate With Quilts" by Lissa Alexander and Susan Ache.
This is a terrific book and is loaded with patterns for 60 blocks in several sizes. It contains great ideas for sampler quilts as well as one-block quilts.

I’ve been so busy pulling weeds & getting the garden in that my machine has been abandoned-temporarily. I love your see along idea & will try to start it when time allows. Thank you for the book reviews. I have been listening as I work outside.

Nicole, even though I don’t usually comment, I read EVERY ONE of your posts! Thanks for sharing so much of your life on your blog. I especially appreciated your packing notes for your recent trip; we were getting ready to go on a trip to Europe, and your advice REALLY helped me decide what to take.

I’m still here! You are at the top of my blog reading list.
I enjoyed seeing your post on the older Moda sew along. I’ve decided not to participate and sew with you as I struggled with a couple blocks; I guess my heart wasn’t in it. I have a lot of quilts cut, so I think it’s best I go with what I’ve got for now. I look forward to your progress.

Your version of the quilt is beautiful!
I totally agree about certain features of the machine we use the most.
The auto needle threader on my machine isn’t working and neither
is my repairman ( he retired)…It is challenging to thread that needle.
I read your posts but this is my first response!
Take care!

Sorry for the silence! I’ve been on a cruise to Alaska and came home with a big souvenir- COVID. I was not feeling well so had nothing nice to say.I always enjoy your book recommendations and happy you had such a nice vacation with your son. I tried something new this trip by using compression bags. Wow, they were great but my bag weighed a ton! Thanks for sharing!

I read your post every day and enjoy all that you share on your blog. I have listen to your pod cast on books with your daughter. Your lay out for the MBH5 is wonderful and will look great with the navy border choice! It is a stunning lay out. Vanessa’s fabrics are great! Glad you had a great visit with Aaron in Ireland. It was great to follow you there. I hope to get to Ireland one day, as my great grandmother came from Ballycastle, Antrim, Ireland. on google maps the beach looks great!

I like this setting for the sampler blocks, it really makes the most of the two different size blocks. I’m just back from my vacation to Portugal and need to get back in my sewing room.

Those darn crickets!! Of course you are in my first cup of coffee read on your posting days. I am always amazed at how many books you read and how many quilts you finish. I am yearning to get some sewing time, maybe soon. I have been mulching and pulling weeds. Satisfying to see an area finished. I have also welcomed 2 more grands. That makes 6 under 3. My last 2 were children of my twin daughters. Cousins 4 mo. apart. Charlie and Eddie! Gotta love those recycled names.

Love your blog and read it first every morning. You may have saved me from making a mistake. I started a sew along with Harvest Road, probably one of the Blockheads, and have a lot of the 6 inch blocks finished.
I apparently didn’t print all the blocks and put it aside. I have the fabrics and blocks set aside to donate to the free table at our guilt. May need
To rethink that. The layout you used is beautiful and has me wavering😏

I love reading your blog each day! I’m like the others above – yard work seems to be eating up my time. I love the layout of your Moda#5 – you brought it together in such a cohesive way – it’s beautiful.

I’m still digesting your last book post! Like others, you are enjoyed with my morning coffee. I’ve been avoiding sampler quilts because they are so diverse. But, I do like the setting of this one. And I especially like the sparkle effect of the dark blue 4-point star and light blue cornerstones. Groupings make it fun. So, you are providing fodder for future designs.
My machine goes in today for servicing and I will miss it for the same features you mentioned. Having it gone for awhile will force me to catch up with the stack of tops to put on the longarm!

Good morning, Nicole! I’m like Ruth and read each post, but don’t take the time to leave a comment! But before the giveaway, I was going to comment on how beautiful your Blockheads quilt turned out. I guess I feel done with the whole blockheads movement and I didn’t want to leave a negative comment when you asked, but your quilt is gorgeous! I always look forward to your new posts! Have a great day.

I was interested to read that you have a Bernina 440 QE. I have one and I love that machine. I love the needle down option. I also have an old
(90’s) Pfaff that I love. It’s so nice to have 2 machines available.

I was finishing up my garden and watching grandchildren. I read your blog every day and don’t always respond. I wrote down a few of the books you reviewed yesterday to checkout from the library. Your quilt layout in beautiful. I enjoy reading about all your quilt projects. I have many in mind, but with work and the grandkids I don’t have as much time to get a lot accomplished on the quilting front.

I love your Blockheads layout! That turned out to be a very stunning quilt. Ugh – I really need to take my Bernina in for service, but I hate being without it! I look forward to reading your blog, and it’s usually my first Internet stop in the morning. I’m sorry if I don’t always comment. No need to enter me in the drawing, I already have that lovely book.

Beautiful setting for your MB5 quilt, so many pretty blocks. As always your piecing is perfect along with your fabric selection, it’s great that you have enough for your borders. I’ve just returned from a 6 day quilting retreat which was a great time and very productive. It’s sure taking me longer to recover from staying up late, laughing a lot and eating too much. Thanks for keeping up your blog!

I always read your blog but rarely comment. I very much enjoy seeing what quilt you are working on and what books you recommend. Even though I don’t usually read the same thing. I’m a murder mystery girl. lol. But I was intrigued by Colton Gentry’s Third Act and I’m halfway through it and loving it.

Your Blockheads quilt is so stunning in that layout.
It is amazing how it all comes together beautifully.

I enjoy your posts very much 😻! I’m planning on working on the sew a long too just need to decide on my fabric. I want to make a red, white and blue like yours. That seems to be the longest part for me, deciding! I have a Janome 6600 that does everything but I enjoy my featherweights sewing the most ❤️!

Hi Nicole,
Your blog is one of the first things I look at each day. I love all your content and the thought you put into each post. And you write so well! As always, I thank you for taking the time and effort to post, and your generosity in sharing with your readers.
I especially love your quilt content. Your beautiful quilts never cease to amaze me. I learn so much with all the process, color and other in depth detail you share. Don’t know how you get so much done – you are so prolific! And the size of your stash!!!
I also love your book reviews, and have many of your recommendations on my to-read list. Thank you.
As for my silence, my life has been over full lately. But like your other readers, I am here, and reading, and grateful for you and your blog.
Glad you had such a good trip to Ireland. And that you have your quilting mojo back in full force. Carry on!! And thanks again.

I was going to comment on how beautiful that quilt was before you even mentioned posting a comment. That is a beautiful quilt and I love that fabric line. I made three or four baby Quilts out of That line. I’m not normally a sampler block quilt fan, but I really really like that layout. That’s making me think I can make this particular one. So thank you for giving me ideas. I love reading your blog and look forward to opening my email in the morning and seeing what you have to write about. Thank you so much for that.

Thank you for such a well rounded blog. Enjoying your fabric collection reviews, your book reviews, your tool and piecing tips, and really like your exploration of various setting options for sampler quilts. Please keep posting!

You are my favorite blog and I look forward every day to reading it.
Your book reviews are so helpful in choosing what to read. I recently read “The Long Flight Home” by Alan Hlad. A friend recommended this to me and I enjoyed it very much .
I like seeing your quilting. It often inspires me to get going!

Oh, dear! I confess I’m one of the lurkers… I’ve read your blog for years. I have cooked recipes, purchased supplies (FQS – great shop!), added books to my library, and even discussed task lighting with you via email. But, I don’t do Faceboook/ Twitter/ etc. I allowed this “login hurdle” to keep me mute. Now, I’ve registered and can comment. Once again. You’ve taken me someplace new!!

Life has been busy! I love my Bernina 710, but my 440 is still going strong. It’s the one I take to retreats or if I have to take my machine anywhere. You do realize the 440 also has the needle down option?
I love your quilt setting.

Your new quilt turned out beautifully! I, too, am having sewing machine issues – mine will be at the shop until a part comes in, which will be more than a month. 🙁 I have a backup machine, but it just doesn’t sew 1/4” seams as nicely as my Janome. It’s much more of a challenge to sew now. Oh well, when my Janome returns, it should be as good as new. (Btw, I am not interested in your giveaway. I just commented because I have something to say). And, I should tell you that I am enjoying your book podcast!

I think I have been reading your wonderful blog for over 10 years now…you are my first “go-to” blog to read. I always love reading your book reviews, too! I may have been silent over the last week, as I had knee replacement surgery last Thursday…so I’m resting a lot now, and have just ordered “The Berry Pickers” on Audible, from your glowing review! Thank you so much for all your insights!

Yes, yes, it is a lot of fun to read all the comments from the “lurkers”. Sometimes I am prone to just lurk as well. It has been a busy time for me, what with medical school graduation and all the associated hoopla that comes with year-end.

I don’t usually comment but yours is one of the first blogs that I read every day – love your fabric selections for all the quilts you make and I have great admiration for your ability to be so precise with your blocks – I’m still working on that – I also appreciate the opportunity to win a copy of the new quilting book🤞

You know how I love that fabric! And you’ve done a beautiful job on it. We are in the second week of a three week vacation on the east Coast. So I’m not responding to much right now. But I do read you every day!

I must admit that I have gotten away from daily blog reading in the last year, although I do catch up once a week and yours is one of two blogs that I always read. I enjoy the humor in your writing, as well as the inspiration that I get from your projects. I really like the layout of your latest Blockheads finish.

I am a relatively new subscriber and was so thrilled to discover your blog a couple of months ago. I actually went back and read years worth of your posts! It’s fun to keep up with your quilting adventures (and slices of life). I so appreciate your use of stash fabrics and digging into older patterns. It is so refreshing to follow along with someone who isn’t constantly pushing their newest patterns or product lines. The effort you put into each post is obvious and I relish each one. Thank you!

Hi Nicole, you haven’t lost me at all. Even when traveling, I still check in on you. You are my quilting and reading motivation.

I am a loyal follower but don’t comment often – I mostly read blogs on my phone and posting a comment can be fiddly. Now I am on my pc and happily typing away. 🙂

Wow, holy moly – that layout for Blockheads is amazing! It is so perfect! In terms of having sewing machines serviced, three years ago, I took my machine to be serviced and it was supposed to be there for two weeks, I ended up not getting it back for 5.5 weeks. I was so steamed! Yes, they were busy, but why were they still telling people it would only be 2 weeks?! I had other machines to use, but I think we all have our favorite machine. Two years ago, I found someone who comes to my home to service my machine! It’s a dream. Only costs $25 more than the other place, and I don’t really lose the use of my machine. What a find!
