More Is More

001

My usual style of decorating for the holidays is pretty over the top.  This year I decided to scale way back, and I am having second thoughts.   The photo above is my effort for this year.  Blah.  Tasteful maybe, but boring and well, small.

This was my mantel for 2008.  I think it is much more fun.  So, this less is more thing isn't really working out for me.  Guess I am a More Is More kind of gal after all.

Here's the family room.  Meh.  I do like the mercury glass trees and candle holders, but to me, this mantel is screaming out for MORE.

Here is just one corner of the family room mantel from 2008.  How fun is that?

So, I guess what I need to do is this.   Order some pre lit garlands and stick my collection of holly berries, pine cone boughs, glitter bows and any other shiny thing I can find into them.  Get out those fairies and candles and candy canes and festoon the place.  What was I thinking?  I can't skimp on my decorations.

Of course I promise not to go too far like I did that one time.  Oh dear.  I swear, they went right back to the shop where I bought them the day after this picture was taken.

Oh, and if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you might remember that bit of confusion over the tree topper angel I bought in 2008. She looked perfectly normal until we plugged her in.

Right out of Elvis' House of Christmas.

I promise I will get it right this year, it just might take me awhile.  See ya'll later.  I need to go shopping.

  1. Oh my gosh Nicole, LOLOL…that was the first year I was reading your blog and I remember both the ummmm…*lovely* stockings, hehehe, and your reaction to the Angel after you plugged her in. Thanks for starting my morning off with a giggle and a grin. Now you may not have enjoyed those particular Christmas ‘treasures’ at the time, but you have to appreciate the great memories and chuckles they have given you each year. So they really did turn out to be treasures, just not the ones you thought you were getting when you bought them! Hugs…

  3. Oh honey, I’m a more is more girl, too.
How about making your own angel this year? – I picked up a porcelain head and arms for angel or doll making at a thrift shop. I’d be happy to send it to you.

  5. Your more is more better Nicole. You always do lovely decorating. A best friend here in town has a decorating shop that looks like your “more.” She makes a very good living supplying folks with more. Her wreaths are out of sight. People pay well for her brand of more. Carry on!

  7. Ha ha! I do remember your wild Christmas stocking! I agree though more is better especially if glitter is involved, or candy in glass jars!! I’ll be checking in to see how you kick it up a notch. Maybe Emeril is your long lost cousin 🙂

  9. Hmm… Maybe you just need more lights on the mantels? The mantel in the family room looks a little sad… I think you need to perk it up. It looks like “Sad, Poor” Christmas at the Reed’s house.

  11. I definitely love the “More” look at my house. The holidays is the only big decorating we do. I think the lack of decorating the rest of the year is because I don’t have MORE things to decorate with. Just a few things here and there just don’t inspire me but we blow the top at Xmas because it’s a season that has accrued decorations through out the years.
That Angel had some serious technical difficulties. LOL!

  13. Isn’t it great how we just know what our style is? I think your scaled back version is lovely, Nicole, but I know you’re feeling the need for more! I say go for it!
    Cheers!

  15. I love your scaled back version. But some like over the top so I can understand that too. Oh yes…you seriously need a different angel tree topper….so not you from what I’ve been seeing on your blog! LOL

  19. Dearie me! I seem to be entering my gaudy phase that my mother didn’t reach until she was 80. I love more is more at Christmas time! Just today I bought a lovely framed Santa print for just $15 – score!
Love the 2008 mantel and agree you need the fairies, elves, and other whimsical touches.
    Hugs!
