My Christmas Book This Year

Each year during the holidays I like to choose a book to read that is in keeping with the Christmas season.  My selection this year is "The Christmas Boutique" by Jennifer Chiaverini. Many of you are familiar with Jennifer because of her Elm Creek Quilters book series, which is so popular with a lot of us quilters.  I have followed Jennifer throughout her writing career and even met her once at a quilt fair. I have not read all the books in the Elm Creek series, but have thoroughly enjoyed those that I have read.  Would you believe that "The Christmas Boutique" is the 21st in the Elm Creek series?!?  For those of you looking for a new author to read, start out with "The Quilter's Apprentice", the first in the series.  Jennifer's books have great characters, lots of description, and loads of quilting references. If you like it, there are 20 more books for you to savor!

In "The Christmas Boutique", the local church is damaged by severe weather and unable to host the annual holiday event, a fundraiser that supports the local food pantry. Rising to the occasion, the Elm Creek Quilters step in to save the day.  There are recurring characters in the Elm Creek series, but even though this book is 21st in the lineup, by no means is it essential that you have read any of the other books.  This stand-alone book fills you in with plenty of back story on the various characters so you will grasp the storyline just fine.

Last xmas

My favorite holiday book from last year was "The Last Christmas in Paris" by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb.  I gave this book 5 stars, it was that good.  Told through a series of letters between Thomas and Evie, and set during WW1, this was a wonderful work of historical fiction.  Here is a link to my review from last year.

  4. I’m on hold at the library for Christmas Boutique. I had to laugh because Last Year in Paris is featured in a cozy mystery I’m currently reading! I read seasonal books if I hear of them, but not regularly.

  7. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Christmas Boutique. It was rainy and cold and I read most of it sitting in front of the fire immersed in the story. I have read all the Elm Creek series and this was such a fun visit back with the characters.

  10. I have read Jan Karon’s “Shepherds Abiding” several times now and love it. I’ve also fallen back on Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” repeatedly. There’s a reason it’s a classic!

  13. I don’t specifically read Holiday Season books, but this one sounds like I ought to do just that! I did read ‘South Pole Station’ when I went to Alaska earlier this year…not the same, right? 😂😂

  16. I just started reading this one! I’ve long been a fan of Jennifer Chiaverini and have read all the books in the series. Was delightfully surprised to see this as it’s been quite awhile since we’’ve had an Elm Creek book! Have not yet read her other non-Elm Creek titles.
