I knew this red and white quilt block reminded me of something. A couple of years ago I made a blue and white quilt called Winding Ways that called for using a template and doing curved piecing. I really enjoyed making the quilt, and found the curved piecing not difficult at all.
This red and white quilt, called "Give It Your Best Dot", in the latest issue of APQ magazine, has the same visual effect without the curved piecing. I think I might actually prefer the look of the blue quilt that was made with the curved templates, but I think the red and white version is a great option!
You may be wondering what happened to my blue and white Winding Ways quilt–well, I started piecing that wonderful checkerboard border, and ran out of blue and white scraps! So I packed it up, thinking I would acquire some more blues and creams and finish things up eventually. Of course I forgot about it, until Jennifer G. reminded me that this red and white block is so much like the blue and white Winding Ways quilt from a couple of years ago…Maybe it is time to dig it out and finish it. It is a great quilt.
So, easy as these Tri Recs Ruler red and white blocks are to construct, here's what NOT to do:

Reassuring to know other quilters make the same mistakes! Do finish your blue and white Winding Ways quilt; it looks fabulous and needs so little to get it done.

I, too, hope you’re tanked up on the blue and white fabrics so Winding Ways can be finished. It’s a lovely quilt!
Your new red/white Dot project is a delight in a completely different way because of the central 4 patch. Yesterday I looked in Barbara Brackman’s book “Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Blocks” and found this block is names “Judy in Arabia”.
BTW, does anyone else hear Jiminy Cricket song in their head when writing the word “encyclopedia”? I still do. 🙂
How large is “Give It Your Best Dot” going to grow?
Hugs!

If you make that same block in purples it would be a Thistle. Thank you so much for making that mistake. . . because now I think I want to make thistle blocks with all the purple fabrics that I have!

I actually laughed out loud a little when I scrolled down and saw your block. Laughing WITH you Nicole, not AT you. I love both quilts and can’t wait to see how you finish them up! Have a great weekend!

Omg, you made me laugh for the day! I love when you share your mistakes as they are usually something I would do or have done :). I was trying to think of your other quilt that looked similar and am so glad a reader remembered it. How cool would it be to finish it and have a red and blue quilt for July :). Have a great weekend!

I *knew* that there was a reason why I loved that quilt in APQ (although I seem to have misplaced my copy – oh no!). I look forward to seeing both quilts finished.

So funny. How long did it take to notice it was wrong?

I had to chuckle over that mistake! That is soo something I would do too, and probably right near the end of my sewing day when the cat is crying cuz she’s hungry and the dog us whining to go out, dinner is late and I still need to get everything ready for work the next day! I’m glad you shared that. I have the page turned down for that pattern too. I love the blue and cream version too so I hope you decide to finish that one.
