No, this isn't it. But, seriously, thank you all so much for weighing in with your recommendations, comments and experiences. That was so valuable to me. My gosh, what a wealth of information.
My experience is that I am hard on irons. I have had cheap ones and I have had good German made Rowentas. None of them lasts more than two or three years for me because I treat them badly. I leave them on, I always use as much heat and steam as they can put out, and I have been known to knock them onto the floor. Heaven knows when Ozzie was younger, he put several irons to death by pulling them onto the floor and chewing through their cords. I am not kidding. (Check out this old post from 2007).
The cheap ones last as long for me as do the more expensive Rowentas. But here's the thing. I like using the heavier weight Rowentas with their 400 steam holes more than I like using the lighter weight cheaper brands. When the Rowentas go, they go pretty quickly. They start to spit a bit when you first turn them on and then move on to full fledged peeing all over the ironing board. They leak like nobody's business. A big mess, and a bigger pain in the fanny. I can accept that as long as I know I will get a good two plus years of service out of them before they are reduced to their particular form of geriatric demise.
I am so curious about the new Rowenta steam stations, but I just can't bring myself to pay the $225 for one. I need to wait and see if they actually last longer than two or three years before I spring for one of them.
Of all the comments, I liked Robyn's suggestion (as it suits my modus operandi) and think I will follow what she did. She bought her German made Rowenta Focus at Kohl's when she had a 30% off coupon and a couple of $10 Kohl's Cash coupons. So, for now I will use my cheap iron and wait for a good sale at Kohl's.
Thanks again for all the comments. I hope you all enjoyed reading them as much as I did!

I really enjoyed reading all of the iron comments. Seems as though we all suffer from the same problem. I would like to know if anyone has found a great spray bottle!! Mine all seem to leak more than my Rowenta.

I didn’t get to weigh in yesterday, but I have the Rowenta Pro Precision Steam Station. I’ve had it almost 5 years (in October), it hasn’t let me down. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I enjoyed the many comments about irons, too, but am with Susan in wanting a good spray bottle. Any suggestions?
My Rowenta Ultra Professional came from Tuesday Morning and has lasted several years already.
Hope Kohl’s has a good sale and good coupons soon and that Ozzie has lost his taste for electrical cords.
Hugs!

I do not usually comment but I have been studying irons, how important they are to quilting, how to care for them and what types are good. Of course everyone has different preferences. But what came mostly to my head when I read your blog was, have you cleaned out the inside of your iron? If you put white vinegar into your iron and let it steam away for 5 minutes and then repeat. After that you need to put clean water in and do the same. I too am not very good in my treatment of my iron. There are not many that are. But I have had my iron for quite a few years. You may find that you can revive your iron. I have done this and it does work. Since we have hard well water I get the dinking water from the store and for a minimal price I can get my iron to last longer without the scale. The other problem I have had, BTW I have a Rowenta Professional. Is the electrical cord breaking right where it comes out of the iron. My husband has been able to take it apart and redo it. It would have been gone a long time ago if I had not used these two things.
Good Luck with your irons. The forgotten very important part of quilting and sewing.

I don’t know if it’s the same in USA but sometimes there’re great deals on amazon, too. Perhaps you should have a look there?

I too enjoyed reading all the comments about irons but didn’t state my preference because I didn’t want to jinx mine. I know that’s pretty silly but I have had my TeFal for at least 14 ~ 15 yrs so not sure if I could find another one just like it. It’s not heavy but probably considered medium wt ~ perfect for my arthritic hands.I love the finish on the sole plate ~ just glides so easy. It steams well & I do use distilled water. It also has a very narrow pointed end perfect for applique & opening seams when necessary. I’ve probably managed to keep it so long because I never take it out to use. For classes, retreats and guild workshops I take my little Rowenta Travel Iron. Great little irons but they do not last long enough. I also use my TeFal for garment assembly & ironing clothes.

All good information, as I too have gone through a few irons. Kohls? What a great idea! Thanks for asking the important questions! 🙂

I love my Rowenta, but sadly, it has started spitting and peeing and I fear I am near the same point you’re at. I got mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond with the 20% coupon, but I will have to price shop with Kohl’s and a 30% this time! I too really enjoy the heaviness of a Rowenta, and boy are they good at putting out steam. I have a friend who won one of the steam stations and I used it at retreat a few times – that thing was awesome! I think it lasted her about 5 years. She was good about treating it the right way and got a lot of use out of it!
