My Old Eyes

IMG_3259

My eyes are old.  They started getting old when I was 40.  The first of many things to go.  I first noticed that my vision was changing when I realized I had to hold my book farther and farther away from my face in order to make out the printing.  When it got to the point that I was propping the book on the mantle across the room, I admitted that I might need some eye glasses.

When I visited my ophthalmologist, I was told that my far sightedness was due to aging.  For heaven's sakes, 40 isn't old.  I was given a prescription, but the doctor advised that I could save a bundle of money by purchasing magnifying "readers" from my drug store.  Nothing wrong with my eyes except for the normal effects of aging.  I told him to stop saying that, and left his office.   Of course I filled the prescription and paid $300 for a pair of glasses, which I promptly lost somewhere.

So my last resort was to go to the drug store and try out a pair of Dr. Dean Edell's eyeglasses for reading.  Do you have Dr. Dean's glasses where you live?  They are in all the drug stores here in California.  I started out with the mildest version, which I think was 1.00.  I lost those pretty quickly too.  On my next visit to the drug store, I tried the 1.25 version and liked that very much.  Lost those too.

I finally got wise and started buying my Dr. Dean's in bulk.  Every time I would go to my pharmacy, I would pick up an extra pair.  Over the years, I have worked my way up to the 1.50s, the 2.00s and the 2.25s.  I seem to have stabilized at the 2.50s thank goodness.  They only go up to 3.00.  I asked the doctor about that and he said that older people's eyes usually don't get much worse than 2.50 or 3.00.  That is why you don't see them for sale at the drugstore in stronger levels.  Honestly, why does that guy like to flaunt the fact that I am no longer a spring chicken whenever I see him?

Now, since I have my reading glasses in every room of the house (and at work, in my purse, in my car), I never worry about losing them.  In fact, I often have a pair on my head and a pair on my face.  I have a habit of perching my glasses on my head you see.  My all time record is when Andrea mentioned mildly that I had three pair of Dr. Dean's on the top of my head, did I know that?

Any way, my reading glasses are one of my favorite things to help me out in my aging process.  The other crucial thing is my Spanx, which if you don't have you are either very very thin or very out of touch.  Check it out, you'll be glad you did.

In fact, I love my Spanx so much that I am offering the Hide and Sleek Cami as a give away.  They come in size small, medium, large and extra large.  I will do a drawing next Friday and the winner can tell me her size and I will send you my favorite Spanx product!   All you need to do is a make a comment to this post.  No duplicate comments please.

This is what I look like in my Hide and Sleek cami.  Just kidding, but it really helps smooth out the bumps.

We don’t have Spanx here in the US, but I’ve heard of them and will definitely be seeking some out when I visit the US next year. Clearly a must on the shopping list.

  7. I have a gazillion pair of those too. I found you can buy them really cheap at Michaels and they come in cute colors. My eye doctor put me on monovision contacts and told me to use them when I need to read. I’ve only gotten to 1.50 so far though!

  9. You are TOO funny!! I’ve worn glasses since I was 4; tried contacts but was too worried about eye infections to stick with them (but my doctor said he had never seen someone with contacts as clean as mine!)
    Have a wonderful day,

  17. Love the idea of Spanx, but the thought of wearing something like that here in hot, muggy, sticky southern Louisiana – yikes! Around here I get dressed in the morning looking for clothes that won’t touch my skin!!!!lol!!!

  19. I discovered that I was having the reading problem at 40 too! My problem is that I also can’t see anything from afar. I noticed that if I took off my eyeglasses that corrected my farsightedness (is that a word?)I could see just fine up close but since I used contacts that was not working for me (can’t take off my contacts everytime I need to read something). My doc told me there were bifocal contacts out there and I am giving them a try. For my quilting I still need to use some type of readers but for everyday reading (like at the supermarket or reading a label here or there) I’m good.
I tried a generic type of Spanx from Target once and was very upset because it kept riding up my torso. It drove me CRAZY.
I’d love to give the real deal a try.
    Thanks!

  21. I have glasses in every room and still am wandering around saying “where did I put them now” – usually get them at the Dollar Store. Have to be cheap since I am leaving them everywhere (another sign of age – ugh)
What a great idea for a give away – everyone that needs reading glasses also needs a spanx

  25. Seriously, I have wanted to try Spanx for my mama belly. What a nice giveaway. How is this for you..I am far sighted and my dr. told me that it will continue to improve as I age because of the muscles relaxing. LOL…

  27. This is way off topic but I was reading Minick & Simpson’s blog about how to press seams – open or closed. I machine piece and hand quilt and I have always pressed the seams to one side because of the fear of batting bearding. But now it sounds like the old “rules” are dead and gone. I am such a creature of habit! I was wondering what you do with your seams?
Also, I’m with you on the glasses! I have found some terrific bifocal sunglasses by Liz Claiborne that eliminate the need for sunglasses on top of glasses – not a good look!

  31. My hubby refuses to get the bifocals he needs…so he puts his readers on OVER his regular glasses. Fortunately, he only does this at home, for it looks rather strange. I think it might hurt his eyes???? At work he just puts his regular glasses on top of his head and reads without them. Men.
I’ve got some Spanx products…but not that one! Love them.

  35. Haa!! Reminds me of me! I have a pair of glasses in every room and usually one on my head! My family thinks it is funny to ask me to read a menu or something when I don’t carry a pair! Spanx (or the like) are my favorite friend too!!!

  37. Your doctor lied. “Older people’s” eyes can get worse than 3.0. I outgrew Dr. Dean’s before I was 50. Finally had to go to progressive focus lenses because I got tired of taking my glasses on and off at church: on to read the hymnal, off to see the preacher.
I’ve been thinking of Spanx from time to time. I like Sharon’s comment above about her top now being her bottom. I can relate.

  39. What we have is what I call “old-people” farsightedness (yes, it’s a word.) Farsightedness is when you can read best far away; nearsightedness is when you can read best only near (without any corrections.) I wear contacts for nearsightedness but need readers for the old-people farsightedness. Whew…what a mouthful that was. I think sometimes if I had an expensive pair of readers, I would know where they were at all times because of the cost. Cheap readers can be lost because they’re…cheap.
    Spanx…yes count me in.
Spanx a lot for the drawing…

  41. What is about doctors that they love ~ LOVE!!! ~ to tell you all the ways that you’re getting older? Can’t see? You’re old! Those funny little spots? Advancing age. That flappy little thing over there? Old age. Hair where you don’t want it to be? Really old! GRrrrrrr.
I love Spanx. They’re awesome. The day they make a total body suit with just eye-cut-outs… I’m there! Do you think it would make me look like Catwoman? Okay, probably not.
And those little readers… started needing them this past year. I bought them to “help” with threading needles. And for un-sewing seams with that super-fine thread ~ after all, it had to be the thread, I didn’t have any problems with the thread I had been using. Five years ago. I don’t need them for reading… yet. But heaven help me if I had to read tiny little print on anything. 🙂

  45. I once had to read the menu in a restaurant by putting it on the floor next to my chair and looking down – my arms weren’t long enough to hold it in front of me. I could probably use the Spanx cami too.

  47. 40 isn’t old but it IS the magic number for needing reading glasses. I have a pair by the computer, a pair on my sewing machine deck (3 feet away from the computer), a pair in my purse,a pair next to my chair in the bedroom. I like to buy the funky fun ones I see. I have a red glittered pair, wire rimmed ones and a couple tortoise shell. I used to have Mary Engelbreit – black with white dots and little cherries at the corners! I need SPANX as well.

  49. I agree completely–with the readers as I’m in the same category…you’ll find them anywhere that I sit to sew, cross stitch, read, applique, quilt, or anything close up! I’m dreaming of the Spanx and just know that it will be as awesome as the readers….maybe I won’t notice the bulges??? Thanks!!!

  53. Well, I can certainly relate to the eye glasses. I always have a pair on my head, one at the computer, one in my bag, and one pair circulates between the bathroom (can’t see to do make up) and the kitchen. I would love to try out a “Spanx” cami. I’ve never bought one, although I could certainly use one. Thanks!

  65. Wow. That’s great that the eye doc suggested going the cheaper route! I had no idea that the basket of glasses you had put up to photo of was actually all yours! LOL! I definitely can use some spanx. Actually, I thought they really WERE for eople who just THINK they’re heavy and need a lift here and there on the derriere!

  67. Well Nicole, I have worn glasses since I was in the 5th grade, went to bifocals at 33 and now I’m back to single vision that I wear only for distance (driving, TV, etc.)I take them off for everything else. But due to my Scleroderma my eyes change constantly, I’m about ready to go back to bifocals again, which I still take off to read and sew, LOL. By the way, please don’t include me in the give away, I have never heard of Spanx but I am very thin (probably a little out of touch too*). Have been all my life but more so now. I have a daughter that stands 6 foot and weighs in at 110 lbs. and eats anything and everything she wants. She is 38 yrs old so I guess she’ll always be thin. Great give away though, and by the way I’m not thin by choice, but I eat a lot of baby food and drink lots of ***cringe*** Ensure (trouble swallowing). Even if I wasn’t thin, I can’t wear anything that puts any type of pressure on my tummy. Man, I feel so abnormal, lol. But Good Luck to everyone in the give away. Hope you get some sewing time in soon. OH!!! and your right, at 40 you are still a spring chicken girl!!!

  75. I had to laugh at your comment about wearing multiple pairs of readers. I was at the beach with a group of friends when one of them pointed out that I had quite a few pairs of various and assorted sundry glasses on my person…I had on pair of normal sunglasses and one pair of readers on my head, one pair of reading sunglasses on my face and a pair of readers hooked on my shirt front..lol. I just said hey you can never have too many pairs of glasses. I would love to win some spanx…I am NOT skinny so I must me terribly out of touch lol!!! I have heard of them, from Oprah I believe but just haven’t gotten around to giving them a try.

  77. I used to leave a pair of glasses at the home of everyone I knew. It became my “trademark”. I finally caved in, gave up the contacts and went to bifocals full time. Now I am looking at the new progressive contact lens that are being offered. It will be great if they work as well as they advertise they do! Spanx are the greatest invention of the last century…seriously!

  79. Hey Nicole! I am an avid reader of your blog – I always find it’s a really relaxing way to end my day 😀 Count me in for the Spanx draw – can’t hurt to have a faux corset in the drawer for those dresses that need it!
By the way, I have one pair of reading glasses. They are prescription with purple frames 😀

  81. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 7 and my eyes have only gotten worse since.
I, too, put glasses on top my head. In fact after putting on makeup I can’t find them half the time. I’ll check the bedroom, the bathroom counter etc etc…then eventually find them on my head…kinda like putting the masking tape on your wrist and not being able to find it after…

  83. Don’t bother sticking my name in the draw as they probably don’t come in elephantine size :o) Just love the story of three pairs of reading glasses on the head at once – bet you were hunting round for a pair whilst they were there too :o) I’m afraid I’ve needed glasses for hand sewing for several years now but the real crunch came this last time when they were 2 pairs for a bargain price and I bought two so I could leave one on my bedside table in order to read in bed without giving myself a headache and having to resort to large-print!

Maybe I need one like this. Love the glasses collection too. I bought a sewing machine this year instead of glasses. Next year I am hoping to see what I sew hee hee.

  93. Hi, I love my Spanx bottoms (panties) and I’ve gained weight (who hasn’t) so I could definitely use the Spanx cami now too!
Seriously, I have been following your blog for quite a while now and love to hear about your quilts, your dogs, and whatever. Your book post almost made me leave a comment, but somehow it didn’t happen. So here it is now: “Half-Magic” is one of my favorite childhood books as well. So neat to finally hear of someone else who loved it too. I also read “The House at Riverton” after that post (excellent) and I am now presently half-way thru “The Little Stranger”. I might have to finish that one tomorrow, I am hooked. Keep those book recommendations coming too!

  99. All those glasses are hysterical. Your so funny. And about that Spanx………..you KNOW I’m needing that. It would be just what I need to cheer me up and right out of this menopausal funk. lol Well and least it would suck everything right up and out!

  101. I haven’t had my eyes tested for about 3 years – I’m waiting until I turn 40 so I can say I made it that far without needing glasses haha.
I’ve tried Spanx (for the bottom half) but found they rolled down. I don’t think that’s supposed to happen; maybe I’m just unusually lumpy. I’d love to try the cami and see if that works magic on the top half.

  103. My husband buys his glasses at the Dollar store and we have them in every room, in my purse, in the car, etc., but he still seems to never be able to find a pair of glasses.

  105. Donate any glasses you don’t want to the Lions Club in your area. They are sent to other countries where there is a need.
    Good thing to recycle.

  107. I just lost 26 lbs after working very hard on it for 13 weeks. It would be nice to Spanx in some areas that have gotten smaller but droopy. :)Enjoy your Blog. Please enter me. Beverly

  109. That is so funny! My DH and I keep a big cup of dollar store readers beside the computer. By the end of the day the cup is empty and we can’t find any glasses. Where do they go? What do people with “real” glasses do, assuming they only have one pair? My favorite part is when we are out in public, my DH has forgotten to bring his glasses, and he asks to wear mine. There he is at the bank wearing my prettiest colorful glasses!
ps…I’m 58 and have always been curious about Spanx….would love to try them.
    Thanks from Gail Washington State

  113. Those doctors like to remind us of our aging eyes, don’t they? I have heard of Spanx, but never tried one. It sure looks like it would make the lumps turn into one smooth curve. I’d love to try one!

  115. Count me in the same “readers” group; a pair in every room. Used for different purposes – one for ready online, one for quilting, one for reading the paper, one for daytime, one for nighttime!! Love the $1 spot at Target for the flashy ones.
Thanks for the chance to win the Spanx giveaway.

  117. I guess I’m one of those that are out of touch – I’ve never heard of Spanx! I would love to try some. I enjoy your blog very much – I’m in awe of all your quilts and how you use them throughout your home. My favorite quilt is one that my aunt gave me -it is so soft and comfy. One thing that makes it so special is that I remember it being on her bed when I visited her as a child.

  119. Hi Nicole!
I too have readers, they are a necessity at this point in life.
Spanx is a wonderful product! Will it reposition the excess up so my bustline will be
    fuller? I can only wish!

  123. Spanx sales will probably skyrocket now that you have introduced a lot of us to this product. What girl doesn’t need to suck in some STUFF!!! The other night I wore this really tight tank top to an outdoor event, and I spent my whole evening trying to suck it in. Now, I did get a nice comment from a guy when he said it looked like I had lost a lot of weight, but if only he knew!!!! OOOO, how I need Spanx:))

  129. OK, I passed on this giveaway last week because I was thin… then I tore an abdominal muscle and I think something to *hold me together* might be in order! I’m thinking I’ll be buying some Spanx if I don’t win the cami!! 🙂 Thanks for letting me know about it!

  131. Since you have reminded us about your great giveaway, I will comment today. It’s not that I don’t need some help with my muffin top, I just don’t like to think about it. I’d rather be sewing!

  139. I am nearsighted and have an astigmatism. DH has “old eyes” like you. Therefore if someone hands us both something to look at, I take off my glasses and hold it up close, and DH can’t make his arms long enough to hold it away! We are a pair! My sister was wearing both of her dollar store glasses on her head at our quiltfest last weekend. She complained that we didn’t tell her they were both up there!
I could use a little smoothing, so Spanx me in!
