My Weekend

WalMart-JT-HT

I thought I'd better check in so nobody gets worried about me.  If I miss too many posts I get concerned emails from folks wondering if I am still alive.  I had a busy and fairly productive weekend, but not much of it involved sewing.

On Saturday, my husband and I decided to check out the new Walmart about 20 miles away from where we live.  It has been remodeled into one of those super duper Walmarts that have a grocery store connected to it.  We made the trek over to the town where it is located and were quickly engulfed in the entire Walmart experience.  There were definitely the usual sketchy people, and I was prepared to sneer, however when I got to the grocery section I was won over.  The prices!  The prices for staple type items are ridiculously low.  For instance, the Faultless Starch I have been using:  $2.39 at Savemart, $.97 at Walmart!  We stocked up on all sorts of staples:  catsup, ranch dressing, tomato soup, cereal…prices were amazing compared to the local supermarket.  No idea if the meat is any good, or what the produce is like, but I can tell you the strawberries looked decent and were super cheap.  This may not be the place you go when you are planning a gourmet dinner party, but for basic grocery items, it may be worth a trip once a month to stock up.

And, the added surprise bonus is that we ran into Sara and Eva when we were there!  Of course we went out to lunch and then persuaded Sara to let us take Eva home with us for a sleepover.

Eva got busy playing with her dolls on the porch, and a discussion ensued about the triangle shade we had ordered to keep the sun off the uncovered section of the porch.  We had ordered one and it had arrived, but no plan had evolved as to how it was going to get installed.

This is a posed picture.  No, I did not give my five year old a drill use.  We got Denny involved and he dragged out the ladders and other equipment needed to get the shade put up.

We did help Denny however, and had fun pretending that Girl Power had gotten the shade hung up.  Truth to tell, it was mostly Denny power.

The day concluded with a marshmallow roast out on the back porch.  The weather had been so weird all day: first super sunny, then the sun would be hidden behind the clouds, then it would peek out again… It was so funny, when we went out to roast marshmallows, it started to pour.  Just a downpour!  Our porch is covered so we didn't care.  It was cozy and fun and a good time was had by all.

Hope to have some sort of sewing posts the rest of the week, but you never know.  I have been cleaning out my closet, and interviewing house cleaners, so my time has really been divided this week!

Just so you know, this is not my closet, but merely a dream to which I aspire.

  1. You know how I knew that wasn’t your closet?? There are orange shoes on the rack & Ozzie would NEVER stand for that! Hahahaha! (You can laugh about it now, right?) I agree that Walmart is great for grocery staples but I’m not crazy about their meat or produce. Eva is getting to be a tall young lady which is great to see.

  4. When my 4 kids were growing up I shopped at Walmart for all my grocery staples. So much cheaper BUT we did go to the regular grocery store for our meat (other than the prepackaged like bacon, lunchmeat etc.) and produce.

  7. When I saw that closet I was in awe and actually thankful it wasn’t yours. Too perfect! Hope you get to sew- forget the closet. Just close the door!

  10. We have a super Walmart, but I’ve yet to shop its grocery section. We usually only go there for the “drugstore” items…can’t beat their prices there.
You are interviewing house cleaners! Does that mean your gal isn’t coming back? Hope her health is going to be okay.

  13. We had a Walmart in Munich for a few years but after a few years Walmart was forced close their shops because with Aldi and Lindl there are already two big discounters with several shops in the whole city. There are some good products you can buy at a discounter but I would never fresh products there they are just not as good.
Good for you that you could ‘steal’ Eva and help Denny with the shade;-)
I hope everything is well with your cleaning girl and you just looking for a temporary solution.

  19. Ha! That IS my closet. All it takes is a trip to the Container Store and that too can be your closet. SO, SO, SO worth the money.

  22. Wowza, that closet! I have been avoiding Walmart because a fist fight broke out between two customers in line at the checkout the last time I was there. I was recently introduced to Costco. Great prices but a bit overwhelming and we don’t have room to store a year’s supply of anything. But I’ll probably make a trip there every 4-6 weeks and pick up a load of stuff anyway. And once I’m at Costco, I’ve driven about halfway to the quilt shop, so…

  25. What a fun day! So lucky you got to steal Eva for the night, lucky girl. Too funny you get emails asking where you are. Guess that happens when you post so often 😂
