From time to time, my friend Lisa and I like to work on the same project. She works on hers in Washington, and I work on mine here in California. We call it a Challenge, but the challenge part is that we encourage each other to keep plugging away at the quilt, and to make regular blog posts on our progress. We both love doing this, and have about six future challenges in mind. We both agreed however, that our Summer Challenge would be to use the Prairie Paisley collection in a project that was on the cover of last summer's American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.
Lisa is ready to sew already, but I am still in the cutting stage. I have my project box all labeled and am nearly done with the cutting. I may finish it this afternoon. The fabrics are Prairie Paisley, designed by Laurie Simpsonfor Moda. The pattern is called Paisley Parade. We will undoubtedly come up with a better name for ours (sorry, some of these pattern names are so lame). Lisa called hers "I Love a Parade", which has a better ring to it. It seems very appropriate to use this happy red, white, and blue All American color scheme for a summer project!
I got my fabric at two different places–In Between Stitchesin Livermore, and Prairie Queensin San Jose. I have a lot of pieces, but not the complete bundle. I am pretty sure Lisa has the whole bundle, with a piece of every fabric in the line, so her quilt may show more variety than mine. At least, our fabric placements will undoubtedly be different. The pattern is a medallion style, which I seem to love these days. You really feel as if the quilt is coming together quickly as you add borders around the center. This is a great style of quilt for you to make if you find the block setting part of quilt making a bit of a bore.
Now, here is something interesting that I found while I was cutting. What is wrong with this picture?
Oooops. I wonder if this is like finding a stamp that has had a mis-print? Could this be worth thousands of dollars to a collector? Hundreds? Call me, we can talk.
For those of you who don't get the "ooops"—The fabric pictured above was designed by Laurie Simpson, not Sandy Gervais. The factory got the wrong label on the selvage. Making an error like this takes credit away from the designer and causes LOADS of problems for people who use the information on the selvage to identify and locate fabric.

I just love Prairie Paisley and had great plans to make a quilt out of it for me but I ended up using most of what I had for 2 twin quilts for my grandson’s new “big boy” room. But I’m loving the new Wiscasset line, which also happens to be one of my favorite places in Maine, so I’ll probably end up getting some of that instead for me.

Not sure I see the oops! But I love your fabric, Nicole. This is going to be a gorgeous quilt.

The “oops” is that the fabric is paisley and the selvage name says “Bias Stripe”…this is not a stripe. (Right? she says in a wee, small voice.)

I noticed that oops on one of my selvages too! I’m glad we are doing this challenge together, Nicole. It always eggs me on to finish something when we work on it together!

Oh Nicole, this too, is one of my favorite lines ever! I have a FQ Bundle that I adore looking at and can’t possibly imagine untying. I even bought a layer cake of the same line just so I could use the fabrics and not feel like I betrayed my beautiful FQ bundle. I know, I’m sick. lol.
I love the light blue mixed in with the traditional dark blues and reds. I just bought a FQ bundle of American Primer also, and the two lines mix and match so well. Imagine the quilt I could make if I only had the nerve to take that Moda ribbon off!
Maybe after seeing you and Lisa’s quilts, I’ll have to have a challenge of my own. The challenge, of course, would be to simply cut into the fabric. 🙂

I too have a pile of that fabric that is kitted up for some kit I bought from I think Fat Quarter Shop. How sad I really like that fabric but never made that quilt, maybe someday!

I love seeing the challenges you and Lisa do. You can be sure I’ll be checking my Prairie Paisley now for the wrong label. I’ve never found that before. Very interesting. I have the kit sitting right in front of me but it will have to wait, other things are calling me. Nancy in WI

I THINK I bought a kit for that same quilt!! Maybe I should drag it out–oh WAIT, I already have 9 gazillion projects already going!! HA Perhaps a little later. Good luck with the challenge.

Fasincating. What a find. I would also think it might be a bonus for collectors. I mean, in a sort of trippy way. But Nicole, you know me, I’m on tilt regardless!!!

Wow what a good eye! I think it will be a great quilt!

Prairie Paisley is one of my very, very favorite groups of fabrics. That is going to be one awesome quilt.

Hmmmm – I’ll be checking my fabric, too, Nicole! I’ve got Prairie Paisley from the Patchwork Party and the finishing kit – just wish I could work on mine with you and Lisa – but too messy for my studio while the house is for sale! I’ll be following the two of you, though!
Cheers!

Seems like I heard another misprint on the selvage story recently. I really like your new challenge project. Which magazine issue was that in? Looks like it could go together pretty fast!

That will make a lovely quilt.Wouldent the true maker of the fabric get a pay out for the makers mistake?
Hugs Mary.

Oh my goodness…I just clicked over on Lisa’s blog and looked at the finished quilt. I’m thinking the reason I have not seen this quilt before is because I just started quilting in March of 2008 and never picked up a quilt magazine until my sister in law showed me her stacks of them in July or August of last year. If I hadn’t spent so much on kits, fat quarters and yardage, in Arizona I would be hot after trying to find this quilt kit. Like I told Lisa, I’m having a bad time not going after it anyway, I really love it. Good luck to you both. I also told her that I can’t wait to watch your progress in the future weeks…then remembered that this is Lisa and Nicole I’m talking about so I have to change that progress report to future ‘days’. LOL…and man or man that error in the selvage giving credit to the wrong designer…it’s the very equivalent of putting the wrong author on the cover of a best selling book and letting it get on the booksellers shelves and the customers homes. I understand that everyone makes mistakes but an error of this nature is SO huge that I simply can’t understand how it could get by their quality control people. WOW!!!

Having someone to bring on the challenge is a very good thing. Marlene from Pincushion Diaries blog was my “challenge buddy”. She and I both had Prairie Paisley project. I actually have 3 (yikes)! Her passing has been a great loss.
I have been to both of the shops you mention and love them both. Prairie Queens is not too far down the road from my brothers home. I try to get in there everytime I am up that way visiting. I have been to In Between Stitches more as I am in that area more often than my bros place (love their new digs).
Will enjoy following your “Prairie journey”.

Your challenge project sounds like a lovely idea–and the fabric collection lovely. Can’t wait to see more. I do remember that quilt from AP&Q but am not a huge fan of that color combo so will be interested in seeing your take on it. I am considering a medallion quilt project too from a donated old quilt top probably made in the 80’s!
That wrongly labeled fabric sure doesn’t look like a stripe either! The QC at the factory must include people who can’t read or write English well (aren’t most of them in South Korea?).

How deja vu 😀 I also had this fabric collection and seriously considered making that very same quilt, but instead opted for something simpler — needed some instant gratification at the time. Can’t wait to see your completed quilt.
