New Fabric!

IMG_2016

I have been on a budget enforced fabric diet for three or four months now.  It has not been fun, but simply necessary.  I don't know about the rest of you, but my spending has really been restricted in this "economic downturn".   I am lucky I can still scrape together enough cash to have my nails done every two weeks and my hair colored once a month.  Some things a girl just can't scrimp on.  But fabric?  One could certainly argue that I have enough of that to last me a while.  A very looooonnnnnnggggg while.  But, it's been hard not to buy all the fabric that I think I love at any given moment.  Grandma Agnes always said, "When you think you can't live without it:  just wait a bit".  She was right of course.  That advice is right up there with "Honey.  No man is worth getting THAT upset about".  She was wise, no doubt about it.

However, I had a few bucks left over last pay check.  No, that is a lie.  I didn't pay Macy's all they wanted and used the money to buy this fabric bundle instead.  It is the beautiful Heritage 1848 Collection for a Cause group by Howard Marcus for Moda.  In fact, I have the impression that Howard Marcus IS Moda.  At any rate, I love the fabric, which supposedly is based on real fabrics from a 19th century antique quilt in the Moda collection.  I just knew I had better move on this before everyone ran out of it.

This is my favorite piece in the collection, which would make a gorgeous border:

It is dark and dreary here today (rain!), so my lighting was bad.  Go to this website (Moda's) and have a better look at all the pieces. http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_collections_for_a_cause.pdf  The proceeds (all or some, I'm not sure) from the sales will go to cancer research.  There are at least two more Howard Marcus groups coming out in the future, and I may just have to have them too.  It's for a good cause, don't you know?

  1. We kept seeing these fabrics at PIQF and fell in love with them. I especially love the one you showed in the photograph–in both colorways. Good job Nicole!

  7. Your Grandma Agnes certainly was wise! Love the fabric…I just cut out a quilt this weekend with it that I’m donating to Hospice. Howard Marcus is the owner of MODA…his name is actually Howard Marcus Dunn…the next group I think is called Traditions and I’m drooling over it. Have fun with your new fabric…can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with it.

  9. *sigh* we’ll probably never see this range down here in Australia, you guys get so much more range in the US.. *sigh*.. and bugger Macy’s I am sure they’ll be fine missing out on this wee bit..
I tell Dags (aka DH) that I NEED this fabric, cause when I make something with it in 3-30 years time it will be out of print and that WOULD be a tragedy (of epic proportions!)

  15. This was a funny fabric collection for me. I liked it when I saw it but didn’t LOVE it. Liked Moda’s quilt with it ~ the kit quilt based on the antique ~ but it just didn’t float my boat. But when the bolts arrived in the stores… it was lust! It wasn’t love… it was pure, unadulterated, GOT TO HAVE IT NOW or I’ll absolutely die on the spot LUST!! (Right, like I’m the only quilter who’s ever felt that emotion in a quilt shop!)
The only thing Macy’s has had that inspires that kind of emotion is Gabriel Aubry and he’s only been in the Macy’s commercials. Until he actually goes to MY Macy’s store, I would make Macy’s wait too.
And as has already been written, Howard Marcus is indeed, Howard Marcus Dunn, the owner of Moda Fabrics/United Notions. The antique quilts used for these collections are part of his collection. The proceeds from this Heritage collection will go to Gilda’s Club in the name of Pam Wieland, a Moda rep in the Illinois area for many years. Pam was a wonderfully kind, lovely lady who passed away earlier this year, at 52, of complications from cancer.

  17. I’ve been on a fabric diet too, Nicole. But this is so pretty and I have a soft spot for birds, ohhh, I think I am going to get me some! And the pdf showing the fabric has birds throughout, heck, I’m gonna print that out on my laser color printer.

  19. I hear ya there sister. I saw this fabric and thought I could live without it. Then it kept haunting me, nagging at me till I caved. That’s how you tell you really want something. Your Grandma was right.
I’m just doing a simple project using charm packs. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  21. I loved this collection. I made a shop sample. I used the Star Patch pattern for it. The fabric you show that would be a good border went between the columns.

  23. Gotta love Grandma Agnes. I wish I could follow her advice more often. The fabric is beautiful. Be sure to fondle it just a little for me before you cut into it. I hope to see some pictures in progress of the quilt you make with this fabric. We are having power issues due to snow and sleet so my computers are being shut down now but I hope the rest of you are having a wonderful day.

  25. Love that fabric. Hadn’t seen it before. I am also on a fabric diet which so far I am doing well on. As far as the real diet-NOT!
Sorry to hear you’re having dreary weather. It is gorgeous in NH today-in the mid 60’s which is unusual for us this time of year. Nice break from the 40’s we have been having. Snow will be here soon enough and we won’t see the grass until after Easter. Yuck!

  27. Oh, honey, it was pure lust for me when I saw this online. Then, a few days later I was in one of my favorite LQSs and there it was – along with the kit for the reproduction quilt, all done up in a little tin box. How’s a girl supposed to resist that, I ask you? So I’m looking at it right now as it sits here looking beautiful. I’ll probably get to working on the actual quilt in about 5 years (if I’m lucky!), but I’ll never regret this purchase. Grandma Agnes was right, but sometimes a girl’s just gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!!

  29. Those are lovely fabrics so one can’t find fault with getting fabric that will make a beautiful quilt, can one??? LOL, besides, look how much you saved by shopping on ebay for you cook books, and how much you will save if you actually use them instead of eating out. So by my calculation – you saved a bundle, and bought a bundle – evens out in the long run.

  31. I bought a set of fat quarters – I just couldn’t resist. What I love is that this is for ovarian cancer research. So little is being done for that compared to breast cancer yet it is much more deadly and much harder to catch early. I’m thrilled they are doing this. One of my good friends in my Tangled Threads quilting group has been fighting OC for 5 1/2 years now.
