I enjoy starting out the new year with a blue and white project. Typically they are small table toppers. For some reason, I always associate blue and white with the month of January. This year Moda Fabrics is kicking off the first weekend in the new year with a Log Cabin sew-along. There is a post about it on the Fatquartershop's blog Jolly Jabber.
I had some lovely leftover strips from a quilt I made in the summer of 2019 and thought they would be perfect for a small navy and white table topper composed of four or six log cabin blocks.
This was probably my favorite quilt made in 2019. It is a pattern by Thimbleblossoms called Sweet Escape. I used a collection of prints from Sweetwater called Sweet Tea. I am really pleased with how it turned out. Anyway, I have loads of navy strips leftover and it feels good to use them.
Making a small blue and white quilt in January has become a tradition without me even really being aware of it. Here are some of the little January table toppers I have made over the past three or four years.
This is a fun way to use those little house blocks everyone has been making. I used leftover blue and white Snowman Gatherings prints from a Primitive Gathering project. I even quilted this one myself.
And I still had fabric leftover, so I made another topper with square in a square blocks. See that beautiful little cardinal card? That was my daughter Sara's Christmas card this year. She actually painted a watercolor of the cardinal and had it made into her Christmas card. She is so talented with her watercolor painting.
This was last year's blue and white table topper. At least I was able to move away from my leftover Primitive Gatherings fabric! And it still needs to have the binding sewn down. I told you I procrastinate. I will finish it this week and put it under my January tiered tray arrangement.
What kind of projects do you like to do at the beginning of the year? Do you start something new?

Happy New Year and January Nicole!
I love to change up my decor to blue and white in January, there is something so cool and crisp about them together. It matches our climate here and I find it soothing. Your toppers and log cabin blocks look great.
My favourite quilt of 2019 is Edita Sitar’s Winter Village…it’s still up as 2020 was so bizarre I never got around to changing things up. 2021 will hopefully be better!

I’m finishing some small Christmas projects then on to a snowflake quilt using blue and white fabrics.

Happy New Year! I ended 2020 and started the new year by making a king sized quilt using part of my French General stash! Didn’t make too much of a dent! So its quilted and I’ve been binge watching Netflix sewing the binding. We are quarantined due to being exposed to Covid. Fortunately we have had no symptoms. I have leftover PG snowmen fabric and a jelly roll, maybe I will make something from that next!

I like your soothing blue & white quilts. Great use of leftover fabric in the toppers. Our local quilt shop has its first retreat of the year the week after New Year’s. That’s an opportunity for me to begin a new quilting project…I never finish at retreat because it’s just too social, but it’s a good start! I do associate blue & white with January & used to do a few ‘snowy day’ projects with my First Grade students using those colors. Stay well!

Sorry, I was distracted by that fabulous cardinal! Somehow, January feels like a time I should finish something. Maybe it’s “resolution adjacent” or something.

My resolution for 2021: I can not start a new project until I finish two existing projects.

I seem to start the year by working on a UFO – something about a finish that keeps me motivated. I might be in over my head this year, as the ufo that I picked is big – it needs a back and quilting, and I don’t know yet how I want to quilt it. Oh well, even if I just get the back made, that is moving it in the right direction, right?

I am starting to warm up to the blue and white quilts for winter as they can hang around a while like the red and white quilts. There was a nice quiltalong through moda bakeshop that was called Winter Frost I think and those blocks were adorable! They had several layouts too so I may try that…but tablerunner is much manageable for sure!
