Nothing Much Going On Today, But Just You Wait Until Next Week!

002
Well, here sits my poor abandoned Bernina, all alone and craving a gentle touch.  Bernie has to wait until tomorrow, when I am working a half day, to get some attention.  I'll be showing you just how I am utilizing that Angler II gizmo that is taped to my throat plate.

Before I tell you what I have been up to, I just want to take a teensy moment to tell all of you how much your supportive, kind, and encouraging comments have meant to me this week.  My blogging friends are so amazing and caring and wonderful.  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  I may not have had time this week to answer each of you, but really–thank you.  I treasure all of your emails and comments.  You are the best.

So, I have had myself quite a week.  You see, I started a new job this week!  Most of my life I have worked as an office administrator, mostly for a major university, in student services.  Once we moved to an area that doesn't seem to support that type of job very much, I ended up doing lots of little part time jobs just to get out of the house and earn some money to blow on fabric and shoes, my two major passions.  But now, it seems I am back in the groove again.  This time, I have a job working for a handsome young cardiologist with a booming practice.

I got through most of my first week, and think things went really well.  And you know what?  The thing I enjoyed most about my previous jobs working with students, was, well–the students.  And in this job, I get the same big payoff–lovely patients who I can help in lots of different ways.  And interesting?   Oh my goodness.  It has been super busy, but loads of fun, and am I ever learning a lot of new stuff.  There is an entire language of medical jargon and symbols that I am getting up to speed on.   And the names of all the typical drugs a cardiologist prescribes is going to take some memorization, I tell you!  I think I am going to like it!

So.  There is something very quilty and wonderful that is coming up starting Monday, on this very blog (and some others as well).  It is the blogging book tour for Monique Dillard's new book, Fat Quarter Winners.  This sensational book is available for sale on Amazon.com, at the ridiculously reasonable price of $9.97, so you should get a copy asap.  You all are SO going to want this book.  I will tell you much more about the book and what is in it beginning Monday.

Meanwhile, I have been rummaging in my burgundy stash box for some appropriate fabrics to  make one of the quilts in her book.  Look at all these great scraps.  Little did I remember what a fine stash in this color range I had on hand.  Building a stash is a wonderful thing to do.  When you see a fabric in a color family you love, buy a fat quarter–before you know it, you will have yourself an entire bin of your favorite colors!

And I started making a few blocks, just to see what they would look like.  Here is a peek at a couple of them.

006
You can see that I am going to be challenged to line up my points and seam junctures just right with this project!  I'll be doing a tutorial on some tips that help me get this technique to come out well.  This one came out pretty darn good.  Oh my gosh, aren't those colors yummy?

007

Talk to you all on Monday, and meanwhile, have a great weekend!  Hope you are enjoying some spring weather wherever you are!  If you have a second, pop on over to Under a Blue Moon and wish my sister Andrea a happy birthday!  If you like vintagey things and fabulous decorating, you will enjoy her blog.

  1. Wishing you well at your new job! I’m a reluctantly retired nurse who misses the patients and the work so very much. Yes, the patients are just marvelous. I’m glad you’ve discovered that so quickly!
The patients will appreciate your care and interest in them, too.
Oh! What scrumptious fabrics!! I’m excited to see what will come next week!

  7. Looking forward to you showcasing Monique Dillard’s new book and also ANY tips on getting those points to line up so perfectly.
I am sure you will excel at your new job as you have such a wonderful way of communicating! And yes, the medical community ( of which I belong… I am a nurse anesthetist) does have a unique jargon. I am sure it will as wonderful for the patients as it will be rewarding for you!
Happy April Day ( and that is no fooling)!!

  9. Congrats on the job, Nicole! I guess that means your days in retail customer service are over 🙂 I’m a medical transcriptionist for physiology dept (cardio-pulmonary studies) at our local hospital so had to learn a lot of new terms after working in Orthopedics for 15 years.
Love burgandy! Will be back for sure for the book tour.

  11. Ahh, Nicole….. a kindred spirit. I work with medical students and simply love it! Wouldn’t trade it for almost anything! Well, perhaps a billion dollars, LOL.
Love those burgundy fabrics. They will certainly produce another beautiful quilt that I’m looking forward to seeing.

  13. The handsome young cardiologist sounds very interesting! Congrats on your new job and I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
I’m looking forward to seeing your tutorial at lining up points and seams. I always have some great ones and some not so great (or even horrible). I’m definitely a quilter who is interested in improving my skills and learning new things. I think learning is what often keeps things interesting!

I can’t wait to see the book and all the blog posts about it. This is why we all love you Nicole. You keep us informed on new books and patterns as well as teaching us new techniques. You seriously could teach classes.

  17. I bought the angler “thingy” and it’s still laying in the package, so you let me know what you think of it and if I should tape it on and use it. Congrats on the new job, I’ll bet you’ll like it once you’ve been there a while.

  23. Nicole – I just have to ask. Now that you have the Angler taped down nice and snug, what do you do if you have to change the bobbin? Do you have to un-tape and re-tape? I use one of those acrylic tables with my H-V and I’ve hesitated to start using the Angler (even though I bought it, of course!). Any hints you have would be deeply appreciated. Can’t wait to see what you do with that luscious burgundy fabric!

  27. Congrats on the new job, Nicole. My daughter works in an office for a whole bunch of cardiologists. New jobs are always a bit of a hassle, but I know you’ll be up to speed in no time.
