Oak Patch

I just love fall.  I think I must make a new table topper every September, even though heaven knows I have plenty of fall themed table toppers.  I just don't care to make that many full sized quilts anymore, and table toppers are such a wonderful way to celebrate a season, holiday, or fabric collection.

This little quilt is definitely a collaboration of fabrics from my stash, and an interpretation of a Kim Diehl full size quilt pattern from the book Simple Friendships by Kim Diehl and Jo Morton.  I did the machine quilting myself.  Sigh.  I am my own worst critic when it comes to my machine quilting.  I did "stitch in the ditch" and outline quilting for the appliqué shapes and it came out ok.  My thing with machine quilting is that it needs to be very unobtrusive, because i surely do not have any skills to show off.

So, are you decorated for fall yet?  It is in the mid 80's where I live, but the mornings are crisp and fall is definitely in the air.  I have brought out a few things each week, and gradually we are getting there.  I've been lighting lots of candles and did buy one new decoration this year.

This photo doesn't even do it justice, but I bought two hollow glass pumpkins from Pottery Barn, and put fairy lights in them.  Super cute, and lots of fun.   I wanted orange lights for Halloween, but the ones I bought didn't work, so I used the white ones I had on hand. They are kind of "Elvis at Graceland" pumpkins in that they light up, flash, go soft light to super light in a wave pattern, twinkle, etc etc.  These are very lively lights. But fun, even if they weren't exactly what I envisioned.  If I can find plain orange ones that just stay orange I will buy them, but for now, this is what it is.

  7. That turned out beautiful! I hadn’t thought about taking Kim’s designs and cutting them down. I have all of her books and have never made a thing from them…I just drool over them! I haven’t decorated for fall, kind of stopped that when the kids left. All I’ve got out right now is a Mickey Mouse pumpkin with a battery operated votive in it, only because I picked it up on our impulse visit to Disney World on Labor Day weekend. We decided to drive down to get my husband a tie for my niece’s Disney wedding. We live in NJ. Left Friday night at 7, stopped to sleep in VA for a few hours, got there at 5 pm on Saturday and stayed at Magic Kingdom until midnight. On Sunday we went to Epcot, met our daughter for lunch and then hit the road to go home. Got home Monday afternoon and had the best time!

  10. I so agree that having lots of seasonal and holiday table toppers is fun. They’re quick to make, can be quilted at home, and you can give them as gifts without a bank loan!

  13. Love the topper! I am decorated, but if I can’t stay out of Hobby Lobby I envision a ton more pumpkins filling up my Fall storage crates! And I have 2 Fall toppers in the planning, but who knows if they will see the light of this Fall.

  16. Fall is really my favorite season to decorate for! Your new topper is gorgeous. Kim and Jo are great designers but your twist is very fine. I’ve got three stages to my fall decor–autumn, Halloween, and Thanksgiving , with special quilts for each. Now I want a tabletopper, too!😜

  31. Great table topper and decorations. I took down summer decorations, but then in got up to 90 again, so I couldn’t quite get in the mood to pull out fall….maybe this weekend now that it has cooled down enough to leave the windows open.
