One Block Quilt

Temecula inspiration quilt

The Temecula Quilt Company is always doing something interesting.  If you love reproduction era quilts and especially if you love super scrap-busting scrappy quilts, you might check them out on Instagram or their blog/website.  You will get so much inspiration you won't believe it.  The fun thing about them is that they always seem to have a sew along going on.  They just finished up one called One Block Wednesday, featuring a snowball block with a variation.  The quilt in the photo above is an antique that was their inspiration for the sew along.

Finished obw

And this is their finished quilt!  357 3 1/2" blocks, set in 21 rows of 17 blocks.  Finished quilt is about 60 x 74".  The sew along suggested participants make 12 blocks per week and in 30 weeks they would have all their blocks made.  It was a commitment!

Here are their instructions for making the quilt.

And you know, don't you, that I am going to have to do this?

What you need is a 2" WOF (42") strip of a dark and a light fabric.  That makes 4 blocks.  I told you it was a scrap buster.  Of course you don't have to have a full 42" strip.  Two strips cut from a fatquarter works perfectly.  Check out the instructions.  Once you see the visual, you will totally "get" it.  I think it will make a great summer project, and no, I am not dragging it out for 30 weeks, unless something new and shiny distracts me, which could happen.

These four blocks came from two 2' x 21" strips each of a dark and a light fabric.  I think in the future I want to mix things up a bit, and will try not to combine the same fabrics in four blocks.  I want it to look really scrappy with a minimum of duplicates.

Fun, right?

I started out using my folded corner clipper ruler, but that was taking way, way too long.  And drawing 1428 diagonal lines was not going to happen.  I set up my Angler 2 on my machine (thanks Tracey!!) and before you could say "Bob's your uncle", I had a pile of little blocks.  If you have 357 snowball blocks to make, that is how you want to do it.

Have fun checking out Temecula Quilt Co, and I hope to have more blocks done by Monday!  Have a great weekend everyone.

  4. I’ve been wanting to make this quilt and hadn’t thought about The Angler! My husband bought me one, not knowing what it was, about 20 years ago and I’ve never used it…maybe it’s time? Thanks for the suggestion!

  16. No! I really should not start something new, but this is certainly tempting. Maybe I’ll cut some strips off some fat quarters as I’m working on a couple of projects that need to reach their destination. Then I’ll be all ready for a scrappy version.

  22. Cute blocks but I don’t think I’ll join this sew-along since I’m currently already doing three (okay four but one is the Summer Moon quilt and it’s year long) and perhaps I’ll should finish these first before starting somthing new.

  31. Great scrappy quilt and I think it would look equally good in other types of fabrics. Maybe 30’s repros or even modern prints if not large scale designs.

  37. Love this quilt, but she did you see she just posted the next one? It will be a stash buster also. I’m thinking about starting it, as I love small blocks and small pieces. And this next one is all about small.

  40. “Bob’s your uncle”? That’s a new one for me Love quirky sayings My father-in-law used to say that someone was “as happy as a hog on ice” That one still makes me smile when I get a mental picture o a happy hog slipping around on ice
Anyway, that is a really attractive quilt and a good way to use up scraps Thanks for the idea!

  43. I have been looking at this quilt block too, will probably dive in a start when I complete a couple of baby quilts. I see the Camille Roskelley uses a piece of washi tape to guide her I have never tried this but think I might give it a go

  46. This is an inspiring way to make this quilt. I maybe joining in with this and using the blocks when making as leaders and enders while working on what`s already being made. Happy Stitching.
