Paper Pieced Stars

It seems I just cannot help myself.  I am like a crow.  I see the next shiny new thing and I want it.  The Moda All Stars Mini Marvels book I was telling you about yesterday has inspired me to start yet another project.  This is a small one though, so maybe there is hope for completion in the not so distant future.  This book is giving me so many ideas for small table toppers and runners.

How adorable are these stars?  They are paper pieced and measure 3 1/2 inches, unfinished.  I only have to make 16 of them, which is a good thing.  It took me four hours to make the six you see in the photo above.  I don't so much paper piecing, so it always takes a bit of a learning curve to get up to speed when I do take it up.  I just printed 16 of the patterns from the book on my home printer, and the size is coming out accurately.

The quilt is designed by Laurie Simpson and is called Stars and Stars.  I have a nice stash of Minnick and Simpson fabrics leftover from past projects, so I am literally just using scraps for this.  The stars are fun and addictive after I got up to speed with them.  I always have to wrap my head around the concept of sewing upside down and backwards (which I feel is what I am doing with paper piecing).  Planning ahead so the fabric you flip over extends as far as you need it to is a challenge for me as well.  I may just start cutting my scraps bigger!

  4. So cute! I, too, really struggle with PP. This definitely would be good piece for practicing.

I haven’t done paper piecing in a while but I always have to almost relearn when I do it again. For me the worst part is judging how big a piece of fabric I need to cut to cover paper.
Your six blocks look so good – can’t wait to see what your finished product is.

  10. I’ve gone through periods of paper piecing. It is slow going. I do cut my fabric pieces bigger. It is just less frustrating.
Those little stars are darn cute!
