Peek at the New Sewing Room

003

As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I had some big changes occur over the late spring and summer, one the biggest of which was that I moved.  On the whole, that was an excellent change, as I never really loved the house I was living in.  It was too small and rather ordinary, truth be told.  However, it did have an excellent sewing studio, which I think my husband cracked up to sweeten the pot, since I wasn't thrilled with the rest of the place.  Nothing lasts forever though, and this summer,  I said "bye bye" to the Excellent Sewing Studio and moved.

This is a peek at my new sewing space, which is an extra bedroom in the new house.  The room is large and has very high ceilings.  The plusses are that my big double sewing table fits, as do my dresser and bookcase and cutting table.  The down side is that the floor is carpeted (not a great feature in a craft room because pins get stuck in it).  There is a nice big closet, in which I plan to have many shelves installed.  However handy those shelves will be, they are completely inadequate to house my stash of fabric.  I am working on a storage solution for that, but it may be a while before it is accomplished.  I will keep you posted!

There is a big window under which I placed my cutting table, which provides a nice breeze and a fantastic view of the hills.  There is ample wall space for placing design walls.  You can see some of my current projects on it now.  What I do need is better overhead lighting, which I hope to achieve by installing a ceiling fan with at least four lights. I have a peg board for storing all my rulers, which I finally got painted white after a decade of it being a dreary brown.

All in all, it is a more than adequate sewing area, and once I solve my stash storage issue, it will be just about perfect!

  1. This is similar to what I have. I don’t use a design wall as of yet, something I have thought about, since having projects hanging over a quilt rack tends to drive me crazy.

  3. Your new house looks just lovely! I am a big fan of high ceilings too – I don’t know why as I’m not that tall but it makes me feel less crowded in. I love the big design wall and the peg board for your rulers is just inspired!
My sewing room is the old nursery which is just a box room big enough for a crib and not much else. However before this I was sewing at one end of the bedroom so having my own dedicated space, however small, is quite a treat.
Look forward to seeing your stash stashing solution – I am still looking for a solution to mine!

  5. It looks like your sewing area is pretty well suited to you. I agree, the carpeting is not really suited for a sewing/crafting area.
Thank you for the peek at your work area.

  7. LOVE your new sewing studio!!!!!! It is so wonderfully bright, airy, large, and those long walls are a dream come true!
My sewing space is a small room, perhaps 10’x10′ with a wee closet (just over the width of a filing cabinet), two single windows, and an unusually narrow door. DH made a screen door for that doorway so the cats cannot get into my small and very full space. There is carpet on this floor, too, and there are some pins firmly entwined in the carpet fibers never to be removed. Most of my stash is on open bookshelves out of direct sunlight, but some is in drawers and in boxes. Still, it’s my wee room!
Can we see the rest of your house soon? Pretty please?!
    Hugs!

  9. It looks really nice and very organized. Good for you. My space is in a finished attic space. Carpet too (ugh)and lots of odd spaces where the roof is. It works but it doesn’t look as pretty as yours!

  11. Your new sewing space looks wonderful. Unfortunate to have to let the studio go, but sounds like you will enjoy your new home and quilting space even more. Getting the closet shelves installed will make a big difference. I have off-white linoleum flooring in my sewing room. Sounds ugly, but it’s very handy. I just throw the threads on the floor, and then, at the end of the day, out comes the Dust Buster and they’re gone in seconds. Also the cat sleeps in there, so there is lots of cat hair to clean up as well.

  13. Hey Sister! It’s good to see you back. Glad to see you got the sewing room logistics in place early on so you could back to what you love.

  15. Oh, to be so organized. A place for everything and everything in its place. I do try but it never lasts – do you make house calls lol.
    Enjoy the new home.

  17. The new space is great. You’ll make it as wonderful as the old studio in no time. Was the move in the same area; are you still near your daughter and grand?

  19. I know you’ll work out the storage issue and make good use of your new space. I hope your new location keeps you in the right neighbourhood so that you continue to have your grand daughter in your life. Glad to have you back and showing your work again, you were missed.

  21. What a beautiful sewing room. May I ask, how is your design wall constructed? I stapled a huge piece of flannel to the wall but it’s now “dragging” so I would like something a little more stable.
    Thanks.

  23. Looks roomy, and you seem to have lots of wall space (which I don’t have). I am expanding and taking over my family room in addition to my “sewing room”. We’ll see how that shakes out.

  25. Your new sewing space looks marvelous!! It is so wonderful to have dedicated sewing space. My sewing room is also a spare bedroom, on the small side (11′ x 12′), but I love (and use) every inch of it! I see two machines set up in yours; do you use both of them all the time?

  27. Your new sewing room looks wonderful. I think as time goes by, you will find it more convenient than the old one. You’ll be close to the bathroom and kitchen and to Eva when she’s napping. Good for you!!!

  29. It’s great to have you back amongst us–and with a brand new sewing space, too! I can’t believe that you had the energy to move again with all you have going on (being a grandma, caregiver, etc., etc.! Hope this new house and sewing room is good to you.

  35. Your new sewing studio looks really nice. I love your sewing table – how clever! Lots of design wall space! I’m sure you will be very happy and productive in your new room.

  37. Glad to see you back! Your sewing room looks very nice! Mine is also a bedroom, not as big as yours, but it is close to the kitchen, which I like. I like having carpet in my room because all the threads stick to it and don’t get tracked all over the house. I haven’t had a problem with pins and it can be easily vacuumed when I’m done with my project.

  39. Congratulations on your new sewing room. The blocks on your design walls are to die for! You have been so busy this summer Nicole…we are glad you are back.

  41. Your sewing room looks good! Even better looking will be the projects that come out of it. It’s interesting to see your creative space. Your pegboard for rulers is a great idea that I may have to copy. Your pineapple blocks are beautiful. And so is your Spooky Canasta from yesterday’s post. Enjoy your new space!

  43. Looks great! My sewing room is an extra bedroom as well and it works great. Wish I had a larger design wall though. Looking forward to seeing all your projects again and seeing pics of your new sewing room and new house. How exciting to be in a new place.

My sewing room is a bit more cramped but I still love it. ;p

  47. Oh Nicole – you can’t do that to me! For the last one and a half years I was envious of you about your new “old” studio with all its carefully selected cabinetry – I even showed it to my husband “See what other men consider as appropriate for their wifes and how much time and money they spend to support them? And do you see how much I could get done with such a wonderful space?” And now all of a sudden you take this point totally away from me! Apart from that I’m looking forward to all the creations in your and our future.

  49. Looks like a lovely big space. I agree that carpet is a pain in the sewing room. So much harder to clean all the threads off. Pineapple quilt is looking great!
