Piecing the Past Block of the Week

Well, that was a bit of a surprise.  I wanted to do the Piecing the Past Block of the Week Sew Along, and what do you know, week one was three blocks.  So there you go, three blocks done.

The blocks are 9" finished.  And do you know what?  I couldn't do it.  Those blocks seemed positively huge.  I decided I am going to cut the block size down to 6 inches and that's it.  No arguments.  They just have to be smaller to suit me.  If I end up having to make more blocks to get a bed-sized quilt I will do that.  Or, end up with a much smaller quilt.  I just don't do big blocks anymore.

I am just hoping that with all my practice helping Eva with third grade math, I will be up to the task of figuring out how to reduce the size of a 9 inch block to a 6 inch one.  So far, so good.

We started off her week back to homeschooling from "Spring Break" yesterday, and I have to say, it was pretty intense.  We worked a solid five and a half hours on her school work and I was drained at the end of it.  Tylenol time, I tell you.  The distance learning thing is going to be ok I think, and we are getting the hang of it.  It is nice to be able to turn her completed work in to the teacher online rather than driving it to a drop off point.

We learned about the Civil War, why our country does the Census, how to write a persuasive essay, some very new-fangled math concepts, and did a lot of independent reading.  And the spelling words for the week…woo hee, how about "furthermore" and "unquestionably"?  I must say, we are each receiving an education here.

  1. I am with you. I don’t care for large blocks any longer and I tend to downsize the blocks also. I love that you’re doing such a great job homeschooling Eva. You go, girl!

  4. I agree with you about the “big” blocks. They look awkward! Sounds like you are doing a great job on the home schooling! I think you will be amazed at how much Eva will do with the one on one with you! What a lovely memory for her!

  7. Common core math is definitely different. My niece gets YouTube videos sent to her so she can help her son!
