I had to share this new "tool" I purchased last week. I heard about it on Moda, the Cutting Table blog. Carrie was doing a post on new and useful sewing accessories and mentioned this magnetic pin holder. I already had a magnetic pin holder, but was getting tired of getting my fingers pricked each time I grabbed for a pin.
Lots of times I don't exactly look at the pin holder when I am taking or replacing a pin. If I am sewing along and want to remove a pin before I run over it with the sewing machine, I just pull it out and without moving my eyes away from what I am sewing, stick it back on the pin holder. And get my fingers pricked by the pins that are sticking out point first.
You know you do that too.
Well, take a closer look at this pin holder. Notice that due to its special design, all the pin heads are on the outside of the holder and the points are aimed at the center! No more pricked fingers! Now when you first dump your pins in the dish, some of the points may be sticking out. Just flip those few around so the points are towards the center of the dish and you will be fine. Also, notice how the pins stay fanned out. This makes grabbing one super easy. No more pin pile ups.
The magnet on this dish seems extra strong, so if you ever drop your pins on the floor, a swipe with this dish should pick them up pronto.
I purchased my magnetic pin holder from Fatquartershop.com for $18.98. It is called the ZIrkel Magnetic Pin Cushion. If you buy one, it will be your last magnetic pin dish, i promise you!

This looks like a great solution. I wonder if there are any possible side effects of having near an electronic machine? I’ll have to talk to my in house science guy about that.

I think the idea is great, but the magnet with the computerized sewing machine isn’t a good combo. It can effect the Mother board in the computer. Maybe move it to the table.

Well that’s a “must have”. I am constantly poking myself with my pins on the “old” magnetic pincushion. it looks so tidy! I have mine right between two pricey bernina’s – I have never had any problems . Should I really be concerned about this?

It looks cool but I rarely use pins unless to unpick some stitches. The only time I did use pins was when I sew a border on but because I’m always prick myself with the needles I switched to use my clover clips for it. Works the sae way they are easier to remove while sewing and I don’t prick myself:-) Thought I shoud share this with you.
