Pinwheel Puzzle

IMG_4872

My little Pinwheel Puzzle quilt is finished.  I think I will put this one on the coffee table in my living room for a more toned down St. Patrick's Day accent.  In fact, I could live with these colors all year long in my house.  The pattern is an old one by Teri Atkinson, and her instructions for this rather tricky layout were very clear and precise.  Each block incorporates fabrics from the neighboring blocks, so one has to keep one's wits about one during construction and assembly.  The small size of the quilt and my design wall were helpful also.

This little quilt measures 16 x 44, which is also the perfect size for a rectangular dining table.

I quilted it with what I call the "Wiggle Stitch", which is #4 on both my Berninas.  I lengthened the stitch length to 2.50.  It is a very forgiving stitch for quilting and makes a nice jigsaw puzzle shape.  My quilting lines are about one inch apart.

Do you find it difficult to find green objects to decorate with?  I have the worst time.  You would think I would at least have more green books I could pull out and use as color accents, but publishers must think a green cover on a book is the kiss of death.  These were the only green things I could find to put out!  Also, have you noticed that greens clash with each other as bad as blues do?  There sure are a lot of shades, and most of them look awful next to the others.  Mother Nature makes it work, but I fail.

Now, to get back to Courthouse Steps.  I seem to be doing anything and everything to procrastinate working on those blocks.  I have about a dozen or so more to make, so I do not know what my problem is.  I am going to have to exercise some will power and just get it done!

  1. THe tabletopper looks great for St. Patrick’s day. I like the quilting stitch as well. My husband and I met on St. Patrick’s day a long time ago so it is always a special occasion around here. Have a great day Nicole. Hope your “steps” are in the plan! You are so close!

  7. Your table runner is so St. Patrick’s Day looking! The tan binding & border really set off the beautiful greens! Maybe another visit to Ireland is in order to pick up some ‘authentic’ green items would be a plan…hmmmmm??? ☘️

  10. Yout little table runner turned out really cute I love your quilting.
Yes, greens can be really tricky to match and I find it also hard to in fabrics to find the one green shade I really love. The Fig Tree greens (although really beautiful) have too much yellow for my taste, Bonnie & Camille is somtimes too light for my taste and so on. One of my favorite green fabrics is from Cotton & Steel, Cookie book, Icing Mini Flowers. It’s the perfect green for me.

  13. Love, love, love your new tablerunner! You’re a quilting machine! I like how you could leave this out for more than one season, or year round, could be Christmassy 😂

  16. I just love the pattern that your quilting made- those odd shapes look like those twister/ pinwheel shapes. You are very clever!
I cannot buy/ use/ find green things either. It’s a color that just doesn’t appear for me. Maybe we have a weird color blindness that makes green invisible????

  19. I have a couple questions. When you do the wiggle stitch, do you use your walking foot? Also, do you spray baste or pin baste? Have you ever tried template designs to quilt? I think I want to try the wiggle stitch for some of my smaller projects. Thanks for all the information you share, and that I can read your blog without horrific world events. Betty
