Red and White All Over Again

You know how I am always rummaging around in my cupboards where my project boxes are stored?  And how sometimes I discover something I had completely forgotten about?  I am happy to report that it has happened again.

After I made my red and white snowball quilt, I had a lot of fabric left over.  I gathered up all my red scraps and some red and white background prints and stashed them in a box with this APQ magazine.  Thinking that some day when I had time and was in the mood for a red quilt again I could make it.  Lots of red scraps.

I need to make some more mug rugs for my son in law's wine tasting shop, and figured it made sense to do something Christmassy, since after all, we are entering into the Season.  I saw this quilt on the cover of the magazine and looked deeper to see what the block size is.  Six and a half inches!  Perfect for mug rugs!  I pulled out some of the red prints and dug out a white print with little red stars on it and made two test blocks to see how the block looked.

I think the blocks will make up into very appropriate mug rugs that can be used during the holidays all the way through Valentine's Day.  I will make 24 mug rugs (six sets of four).  And then the rest of the fabrics are going to be made into that quilt on the cover of the magazine.  I know I will love it!

Oh, and guess what?  The half square triangle size is the exact same size as the 384 black and cream ones I accidently made for my Halloween 1904 quilt.  How about a black and cream version of that quilt?  Tres sophisticated.

  1. What’s not to love about anything red and white?
Now see, what seemed to be a big mistake now lands you a fair way into a new, tres sophisticated, quilt!

  3. “Serendipity” has long been one of my favorite words!! I love the way it sounds and I love the meaning: making desirable discoveries by accident; good luck; good fortune. Your discovery certainly is all of those!! Imagine the bonus that these bits are the perfect size and color to go with your Oops blocks!!! Applause!!!
I’ve now finished the 20 brown chevron log cabin blocks so am on the green! Still need to plow thru my batting to see if I have enough fusible bits to quilt AMIL’s two small Christmas wall hangings.
    Hups!

  7. My theory is that if you keep them long enough you’ll find a place to use them. You didn’t even have to wait very long. Black and cream – what’s not to like!

  9. Oh, a solution to everything! I may have to work on my quilting cupboards and see if my effort will be so productive. Have fun, Nicole.

  11. I never get tired of seeing red and white quilt blocks, and these blocks will make perfect mug rugs. And how convenient to find that the black and cream half-square triangles are the same size. Yes, I think they will make a fabulous quilt.

  21. That red and white APQ cover quilt is on my list of some-day quilts. Love it. The single block looks great as a mug rug. And a cream and black version would be terrific and quite sophisticated. Go, Nicole, go!
