Retail Therapy and a Welcome Back

Thank you for all the kind words regarding my shocking news of dh's lay off.  This may all end up being for the best in the long run.  Who knows?  We may still sell our house for a good price, make our move as planned, and he could find a job closer to our new home and not have to be away during the week.  Think positive.

Meanwhile, I had a very long day yesterday, spent at the Kaiser hospital with my parents in law.  They had to be there at 10:00 am sharp, which we were.  Surgery on my father in law's cataract was supposed to be at 10:30.  Inexplicably, by 1:30, he still had not had his procedure.  No explanation, no apology, nothing.  Finally at 2:15 the doctor saw him, did the surgery and I had him home in his easy chair by 3:30.  I don't know who was more beat, them or me!  Sitting for that long makes my hip joint freeze up and I hobble like Walter Brennan for a week.

On my way home, I decided I deserved some bit of fun in my day, so I stopped off at my favorite quilt shop, Prairie Queens, and browsed awhile.  I am saving my pennies for the six quilts I have in line to be quilted, so didn't make a purchase.  However, when I came home, look what I found in my mail box!  Two layer cakes each of Fresh Cottons (Fig Tree for Moda) and A Breath of Avignon (American Jane for Moda).  I must have ordered them in a weak moment.  (Or ordered them after a couple of glasses of chardonnay).

I need some more layer cakes like I need a hole in my head, but I want choices for the patterns in my new Schnibbles Times Two book!  My plan is to work my way through that book, making every quilt in there.

Speaking of books, the talented and prolific Carrie Nelson has yet ANOTHER book that was released this month!  Miss Rosie's Spice of Life Quilts published by Leisure Arts.  Another winner that you will find is a must have for your quilting library!  The blue quilt on the cover is calling my name.

Now for some fabulous news!!!  My daughter Sara, The Winemaker's Wife, has started her blog up again!  Her life has settled down into a calm and simple routine, and she has the time and spirit to share her life with the world again.  Please go say hello and see what she is up to.  Welcome back Sara!!

  1. Retail therapy is absolutely essential at times, I agree. I love the 2 layer cakes you bought. One of my last “therapy” sessions involved buying a lot of the Breath of Avignon line. I just love how fresh this line looks! I’ve petted it quite a bit, and when the right project comes along, I will be ready for it. Good luck with your move and your dh’s job search. It certainly has to be a bit scary dealing with this! And…congrats to your daughter! I will check out her blog.

  3. Don’t you love that new book? I got it in the mail last week and I’m in love with everything in both of those books! I was over at Carrie’s site this week and I discovered there is still more treats for us this year from her. She has another book scheduled to come out in October called A Touch of Rosie Quilts. Still not on Amazon but you can catch a peek of it on Leisure Art’s Site:

  5. Oh, just what I need, more temptation! I have so many charm squares that are 5″ that these books would actually be a wise investment, right? Is that a rationalization, or what??! Did I say I have about 100 quilt books, plus nearly 20 years of quilt magazine issues?
My turn with the in-laws is next week. Wednesday FIL is having a cardiac cath at age 85 and I am concerned.
Hope your hip is kind to you. Perhaps your time at retail therapy loosened you up just in the nick of time. Hope so!
    Hugs!

  7. Hi Nicole,
Hope your father-in-law’s op and your hip have a speedy recovery.
I’m off in ten minutes for retail therapy with my daughter who gave us a surprise visit last Tuesday with SIL and 3 grandchildren! Ten days of loving them before they sail home again…bliss!!!
I am also planning to make the front cover quilt of “Spice for Life” for one of my sons (I have four living at home) and Carrie said “Elizabeth” is in the book too! Just waiting for it to arrive, should be early next week.
Doesn’t the saying go..when one door closes another opens…positive thinking is the way to go.
    Best wishes from Australia.

  9. Hi Nicole – There must be some definitive clinical research that says retail therapy is good for the soul ( that’s my story and I’m sticking to it – LOL) I really like your idea of sewing your way through Carrie’s new Schnibbles book. I have a bunch of Layer Cakes stashed away. I think there will be some happy sewing in my future this weekend. Hope you have a good weekend too.

  11. Walter Brennan!!! WEll, I hope you don’t sound like him anyway. Retail therapy is good for lots of ailments, especially sore hips. I have personally never purchased a layer cake because they don’t sell them around here locally. The new Miss Rosie book is very enticing I agree!
It was fun having your daughter guest blog. I hope she enjoyed it too. Will have to check’er out.

  15. I hope your DH can get work closer to home. It is hard being apart.
    Carrie’s books both look great.
I’m off to look at your DD’s blog. 🙂

  17. so glad you had a great trip back to our lovely Michigan. I am up just a bit…in the Ann Arbor Area…and Spring has been nice this year – my lilacs were so beautiful and there is nothing like that smell. I have good friends in Marine City – I will have to look up the B&B next time I’m there – I’d love to have a tour. Your quilts are gorgeous…and “Next Thing on My List” is a great book, I saw it on your shelf. It was a good, light read. Good luck on the sale of your home and dh’s job.
