I have met my goal to finish a project or two before permitting myself to get started on anything new. With Jelly Bellies, Cupcake and my Chocolate Sampler at the quilter’s, I am free to begin something fresh. In anticipation of this day, for a couple of months now, I have had the beautiful Roman Holiday fabric collection by Moda all cut out and ready to make into a Miss Rosie Quilt Co. pattern called Opening Day.
I love getting my fabrics all cut out (I know, I’m weird) and packed into little labeled zip lock bags. For some reason the whole process of getting things lined up carefully and ready to go satisfies some inner need of mine. At any rate, here are all my pieces for Opening Day/Roman Holiday. There are quite a lot of flying geese units in this project. I have a favorite method of making flying geese, which I have posted on in the past. It is a good thing that I also enjoy the process of making flying geese from the looks of this pattern!
When I am sewing with my quilting group or at a retreat, I find it best to work on some kind of simple piecing, rather than trying to lay out blocks in rows or on a design board. I just can’t concentrate in a group setting. A mindless piecing project works best for me in that kind of venue. If I can just get into an automatic pilot piecing mode, I can multi-task and enjoy chatting with my friends! My husband asks me every now and again, "Why schlep all that equipment back and forth to sew with your group, when you can sew at home and not have to carry stuff around?" Haven’t your husbands asked you the same question? To me, several hours spent in the company of my quilting buddies is more than equal to the trouble of loading my sewing machine, sewing supplies and project boxes in and out of the car. A hundred years ago, women gathered around quilting frames to chat and stitch. Things haven’t changed so much, have they?

Hi Nicole,
Looks like it is going to be a beautiful quilt.
I am also a big fan of cutting out ahead and storing the pieces in zip lock bags.
Happy sewing!

Another vote for cutting out and storing in bags! Especially if there are a million pieces to deal with. Have fun with your new project! It looks lovely.

Seems to me, if you went to one of those old time quilting bees all you needed to bring was your thimble and maybe your favorite kind of needles. Today we have to schlep our sewing machines, cutting board, cutters, yards of fabric etc, etc, etc. There is something to be said for simplicity.

Oh, HONEY, it is going to be lots of fun to watch this come together!

How very organized of you! Yes, Opening Day is begun and awaiting my renewed attention one of these days. Meanwhile, I have about 14 other projects I am juggling–most unsuccessfully!

I’m with you, it has to be simple when I’m in a group. Mindless piecing as I’m easily distracted. Love all the organization! I can’t wait to see it come together!

WOW that is organized cutting. I have to admit, cutting is my least favorite thing of quilting, along with putting on borders. Can’t wait to see the finished quilt. Your projects are always so stunning.
Hubby has wondered that also. But I really need that companionship of my sewing peeps. Very seldom does quilting or sewing get talked about, just life in general. A mindless project is always good in those situations.

yep, simple piecing is all I can accomplish at a retreat! Too busy enjoying what everyone else is doing! I just rounded up some of that Roman Holiday line myself. Love it. I will enjoy seeing your progress.

I just when to retreat, and a lot of people asked me where I was going, they could not get their head around the idea of a quilting retreat, couldn’t understand whey we want to sew all day, but when I said I was going to a ladies retreat, they were fine with that.
I also prefer simple piecing for a retreat. Once I get to laying it out, I like a lot of room, and don’t always get that at a retreat location.
Getting the fabric cut up, ready to go, can be the longest part of a project for me, I have a few where I have picked up the fabric, and I knew once I get it cut up, I will start to make progress on the quilt, just find it hard to do that first part.

Oooh, that is going to be gorgeous! I love your idea of cutting everything and putting it into labelled bags. Congrats on finishing some projects so that you can start something new! I would so love to go to a quilting retreat – what fun that must be!

I love getting together with some gals and sew. I don’t know how much sewing is done but there is sure a lot of laughing. Schelp, I was howling at that one. That sure is a slang term from where I live. I haven’t heard anyone else say that.

This is going to be a fine looking quilt. I think getting everything cut out is half the battle, especially with a Ms. Rosie pattern. I put my pieces in size piles and pin a note on them telling me what they are, and pile everything in a plastic box. Your way is much neater. And I agree about taking mindless sewing when you are with a group.

Great technique for flying geese! My method wastes too much fabric (I hate little triangles). I am going to demo it to my quilting group. Thanks!! BTW – I look forward to seeing the end product!

Oh I have this pattern and oh I’m making mud over at my place when maybe I should be doing this with you? Of course I’d be behind because you’re already cut! 🙂
I like to cut as I go. Not as efficient as what you’ve got going on here that’s for sure.

I like the idea of having kits already to go so I can just go and enjoy the sewing process. Looks like you have the beginning of a beautiful project!!

I love how organized you are! I definitely feel very satisfied when I have cut everything ahead of time for a project – all is right with my world. LOL! The pattern is going to be beautiful in that fabric! I agree with mindless piecing in a group setting – I get so easily distracted listening to everyone else and seeing what they’re doing! That’s the therapy, isn’t it?

You are not crazy. One of the very first quilts I made was a mystery quilt and the designer wrote in her directions to cut the pieces for each clue and put them in a baggie. So, go for it!
