Feel like love is giving you the run around? Don't despair, you can sort it all out by making this cute Valentine's table topper. These flying geese are going around in circles trying to find the hearts, but I think it is a lost cause. We know what to do though.
Some sewing has been happening. I can't let a holiday go by without making a seasonal table topper it seems. I chanced upon the instructions for making the heart block on The Crafty Quilter blog. Julie Cefalu is The Crafty Quilter, and she has a great tutorial on how to make a 6 1/2 inch heart block on her blog. She gives the option of surrounding the block with 1 1/2" strips to increase the size to 8 1/2" (8" finished), which I did. Her instructions called for making an "ombre" heart, with successively lighter fabric strips, but I had a layer cake of #Love by Sandy Gervais that I wanted to use, so I just did my own thing.
I made four 8 1/2" heart blocks. Actually I made five, but the runner would have been too long for the table I was going to use it on, so I took one block off. I knew I needed some sort of border, and I do love flying geese. So, I made 60 flying geese, 1 1/2 x 3" finished and surrounded the strip of four blocks. Five on a side, 25 on both the top and bottom. They fit perfectly, which always surprises the heck out of me when it happens. The finished quilt size is 14 1/2 x 38".
As I mentioned, I had a layer cake of #Love by Sandy Gervais. I used all the red squares that were provided, plus most of the lightest white squares. I had about half the layer cake leftover (in tans and white with red print). I used Kona Snow for the flying geese backgrounds, but didn't measure how much I cut. Somewhere near a half yard, maybe less. I used Kona Snow for the binding as well.
I did a simple cross hatch quilting design, with the lines 3/4" apart. I think it turned out super cute, and it is making me happy every time I walk past my hall table.

What a fun piece! And there’s just something about a red and white quilt, no?

It looks really nice. I love making flying geese (I use the Fit to be geese rulers). Kona Snow is my favorite white fabric. If I ever buy a bolt it will be Kona Snow.

Adorable! Kona Snow is my favorite background, and Sandy Gervais always has cute prints. I’m always surprised too when MATH happens to work out! I need to get out my Valentines quilts, as it appears winter has skipped our area entirely.
