Ryan’s Quilt

012

This is the second quilt I received back from my quilter, Mary Flynn of Quilt Hollow, last week.  I made it for a very special man in my life, and am so pleased with how it turned out.  Mary's quilting is wonderful.  She used a classic design called Baptist Fans, which I think perfectly sets off this angular and rather modern  black and cream design.

The quilt was a design experiment, inspired by quilts  Thelma/Cupcake and Carrie/Rosie made.  They got the idea from Camille Roskelley's Craftsy video 25 Half Square Triangle Blocks, to make quilt blocks using only 16 half square triangle units per block, arranged 25 different ways.

I happened to have quite a lot of black and cream half square triangle units already on hand, due to a major mistake I made while making a pattern called Halloween 1904. The pattern called for 384 two and a half inch finished half square triangle units.   I made 384 two inch finished units.  Yes.  Seriously.  The neighbors are still talking about all the screaming that came from my house on that dark day.  The sheriff even came to see what was up.  No, just kidding. but it was pretty bad.

The good news is, the half square triangle units were all put to good use, ultimately, and this quilt is the result.

  1. It’s not just the clever use of those orphan hat’s that make this quilt so wonderful, or their blocks, it’s the scrappy setting blocks and the background that pull it all together to make a very stunning quilt. Really, aren’t you just a little sad to see this one go to its new home? Great job all around Nicole.

  7. What an interesting quilt and the quilting is beautiful! Applause, applause!!
Don’t you love the bazillion ways HSTs go together? Best, in this quilt you were able to use the oops blocks so that was hugely satisfying. Black and cream quilt with HSTs? Oh, yes, I happen to have 384 of them right here. Glory be!!
Since the HSTs are very small, how large is this quilt? Sorry, it’s too early for math so please just tell me. Thanks!
    Hugs!

  10. Love the Baptist fans! Totally cool counterpoint to the pointy-ness of all the triangles. I live hundreds of miles away and remember that screaming 🙂

  13. lol, I shouldn’t laugh but I empathize with you. It really sucks when you’ve cut something or sewed something the wrong size. The wasted fabric. The wasted time. The annoyance of it all! We’ve all been there. ;p
What a beautiful quilt to come out of such a huge mistake. Lemon aid, anyone? ;p

  22. Pretty stunning results for a mistake. So glad you were able to come up with this alternative and feel so good about the finish.

  25. Ohhhh I love this even more now that it is quilted. I’m sure Ryan will too!
I’m not sure what I would of done had I been left with that many wrong-sized half square triangles…I’m quite certain, though, that more than the Sheriff would have shown up.
I’m so happy you were able to use them.

  28. I remember when you were making this. It looks great quilted. What a great way to use those half square triangles. I might have burned them if it had been me who messed up. And you ended up with a beautiful bonus quilt.

  37. Hi there, I have been looking for the 3 Bean Salad quilt pattern and noticed you have a very pretty picture posted of your quilt done in that pattern. Would you happen to recall where you found that pattern? Thanks so much, Katie; email address [email protected]
