The past week has been kind of a topsy turvy one, with me busy keeping up with my new puppy Ozzie, with Ozzie figuring out exactly what it is that I want from him, and with my husband adjusting to his new job. We woke up this morning and discovered that TODAY was the day of our neighborhood annual garage sale. Believe me when I tell you that the amount of "stuff" in our garage is a big issue. I hopped up and set up a folding table right away and barked orders to my DH to pull old linens down out of the closet, dig out those old dishes, find that set of flatware we don’t use any more, and go through the coat closet for any old coats we should get rid of. He scrambled around doing my bidding, while all sorts of folks came curiously up the driveway to see what things we had that might be worth parting a dollar for. It is just so silly how these garage sale things work. You put out a $300 Ralph Lauren comforter and some one distainfully asks if you will take a dollar for it. You say "Um, well, I was thinking it was worth at least $20…" They then offer $1.50. The idea is to get rid of the stuff right? Let it take up space in someone elses house. My husband said something about having to go to work for a while, and left me to my own devices. After two hours I decided I had had enough, and closed the garage up and went in and counted my money. $140!!!! My gosh. I put out two bins of large cuts of fabric (each one 1-3 yards long). I said I would sell each cut for one dollar. I got two takers who weren’t too bargain crazy and paid my price without haggling. They handed over the cash and then said "The plastic bins are included right?" No. There is a limit. I had my gazillion dollar puppy out there with me, and am surprised someone didn’t offer me a buck for him.
As I said, we have had a crazy past week, and my husband has been amazingly patient and sweet, and I want to treat him to a special Saturday night "date worthy" dinner. I got out one of my Rachael Ray cookbooks and chose this menu:
Marinated Beef Steaks with Pan Gravy
Cheesy Orzo
Balsamic Glazed Vegetables
I am looking forward to his return, and a quiet evening spent chatting over some good food and a fine bottle of something red. No dog training dvds for us tonight. Here is a picture of my Ozzie. Settling down to live with us at last. I want to extend my sincerest thanks to all of you dear blogging friends who took the time to give me such great advice and encouragement in response to my last post. I have taken all your advice and the past couple of days have been much much better.

That really is one cute puppy. If my daughter saw him, she would be coveting him. Let’s hope they have one of those Humane Society cuddle the puppies nights in the dorms soon.
I am with you on garage sales – it seems like a good idea but the haggling is not so appealing.

One sweet dog AND one sweet husband! You’re a better woman than I, Nicole. I hate garage sales. From either end.

People try to get buy everything they can at garage sales…if it’s not stapled down it will walk! When I moved to the UK I had a huge clear out and I can remember selling everything including the plastic container for a song…just because I needed to get rid of it before the move.

Ozzie, man, you are soooooo cute. When you get a little older, I have just the girl for you. Her name is Sophie. She’s been fixed, so no hanky panky. But I ‘spose you might be fixed by then too.

I can’t get over how stinking cute he is! I have a Cairn Terrier (like Toto off of the Wizard of Oz) and want to add one like Ozzie to my pack. Of course, I think it would be a little much to have 2 kiddos under 3, 2 dogs under 3 and then add another pup….Max is just finally starting to calm down.

Oh Nicole! Ozzie is just the cutest little guy! You will survive his puppyhood, I promise! Every day is a new day – you just never know what will strike his fancy each day.
As for the garage sale, I have never had one, but have helped friends with theirs. Some people think a dime is too much to pay for certain things, but they are bargain hunters, and that’s what they expect to find – a bargain! At least you cleared out some things that you no longer had a use for, right?
What a yummy dinner – I would be your ‘date’, too! LOL!

I reeeeeeeeally don’t like having yard sales. I hate putting up the signs. And, we have to buy them from the city which really bugs me with all their rules, etc. I do have a good location in a cozy little suburb. I always have neat things that were errors of shopping judgement on my part. The night before my sale I have a ritual of divorcing myself from the “stuff” and promise myself that the goal is to “let it go.” My last sale, last August brought me $940.00. Im a little more inspired now.
I need to have one more, this year, before my sister comes for the 4th of July so that we’ll have enough spending money to have some fun and make even more bad shopping choices, but together. Ozzzie-such a cutie.
I think I’m hooked on your blog. THaaaank you. Betty
