Scrappy Trips, My Million Dollar Quilt

IMG_1701

In an effort to tackle some neglected UFO's, I got out my Scrappy Trips project box.  I had printed out the online pattern instructions back in May 2013, so this has been in the works a good year and a half.

I love these fun, cheery, mainly primary colored fabrics.  A quilt in this color scheme will go great in Eva's room, and since she likes to "sleep warm", having a couple of coordinated quilts on her bed will be just fine.  These fabrics are various scraps from my American Jane stash.  I had a jelly roll and lots of fat quarters to start with.  I thought, "Hmmm.  I believe I could use some more reds and blacks".  Then I ordered more fat quarters in those colors.  Then I thought, "Oh my, some more blues and yellows would be good", and ordered those too.   And last week I ordered two more jelly rolls of more recent American Jane collections:  Ducks in a Row and Fresh Air.  I do not even want to add up in my mind what I have spent on fabric for this quilt.

After investing this much money in the project, I can tell you it won't be a UFO much longer.  Now I need to come up with about three more jelly roll friendly projects to use up all the leftover fabric.

  1. This will be such a happy and delightfully colorful quilt that Eva will adore. What’s not to love about it?
I hear you on the staggering cost of fabrics – and food, gas, and other goods – but know the fabric scraps will be used up in various ways as you’re very inventive with ideas. Besides, Eva’s dolls need a few sleeping bags or quilts themselves.
We’ve had a dusting of snow and freezing rain, so it’s lovely to have leftover homemade veggie beef soup and cornbread available for lunch.
    Hugs!

  4. Yep…been there and did the same thing. Started a mystery quilt and using just scraps….then not enough of one color so back to store and again another trip for other colors. Cost more than I thought and it also will get done! Just love your block colors and will be a great quilt for Eva’s room.

  7. I’m sure you’ll come up with lots of ideas for those jelly rolls & have fun doing it, too! Matching doll quilts would be a start for the scraps & they’re quick to make!

  10. I have several trunks of fabric for “million dollar quilts” At least you’re making one. I can’t wait to see this one finished and Jan’s idea for doll quilts is brilliant.

  13. I made a scrappy trip around the world quilt last fall, and love it! Made the center diagonal the same red in every block, so that it criss-crosses throughout the quilt. You will love it!

  16. check out my latest project on Moda Bake Shop – it would look fabulous in American Jane prints! I actually have a hoarded jelly roll of ”Wee Play” and one of ”Pezzy Prints”, and a jelly roll of red that I plan to make another with this pattern (scrappy irish chain) – I just need to order one more jelly roll of an American Jane print that ‘goes’ with ”Wee Play” because I’d prefer not to use some of the colors in the pezzy prints jelly roll. Pink just doesn’t seem ‘right’ with ”Wee Play”!

  19. Love your fabric choices for TATW. I’m working on one in “watery” colors of blue and green batiks. And I’ve also been working on it about a year and a half. And like you I have pulled it out this month and have been working on more blocks.

  22. I wish you could have shopped in my stash first. I have already accumulated so much American Jane, I’ll never use it all. Especially now that I have pieced two large quilts with it. Love her collections, but I have so many others to make as well. I can’t wait to see your completed trip. I’m sure it will inspire me to make my third AJ quilt.

  25. Fun fabrics Eva is such a lucky girl.
At least your jelly rolls are pretty. I was so enamored with jelly rolls when they first came that I bought several only to find that they are really not my taste.
I need more jelly roll patterns to use up that fabric and donate the quilts.

  28. The Scrapbasket books have great quilts for 2.5″ strips. There’s three books in the series. I have them all and have projects marked in each!
