How cute is this block? It is the 18th block in the Sewcialites Sew Along hosted by Fatquartershop. This one was designed by Corey Yoder of Coriander Quilts. I had no issues with this block, even though it was classified as for an "experienced" sewer. Well, I guess I am, but mainly it was trouble-free because I made flying geese and half-square triangle units that were oversized and then trimmed them down to be exact.
Do you all take on more than you can handle? I guess as women we all do, but I am thinking of as a quilter taking on too many projects. I have so many sew-alongs and unfinished projects it is ridiculous. I feel like the quilt police are going to knock on my door and issue me a citation for excessive unfinished projects.
I am enjoying this Sewcialites sew along because it has been pretty simple to keep up and the blocks are not terribly challenging. I still have that Red Barn block project to finish. And I just started the Little Blocks 365 paper piecing project, which is going to take forever to finish. And there are about six or seven other projects I won't list here that all need finishing. I shouldn't really care because I don't have any particular deadlines, or even a need for more quilts. I do have fun with the process and love starting new things and playing with fabric. I am like a magpie. With each new shiny thing I get distracted.
But the big project that is calling to me to finish is the Moda Blockheads 3 sew-along. I have loved participating in that over the past year. But now it is time to choose a setting and I have been paralyzed. I am wondering why on earth I chose to make blocks in four different sizes. How on earth will I combine 12", 8", 6", and 4" blocks in one quilt? At one point a week or so ago, I was thinking I would have to end up making two or three different quilts. I should have had a better plan when I started out.
However, I have had an inspiration. Julescreates on Instagram has come up with an amazing setting using all the block sizes and I think it is stunning. She used sashing around her blocks and constructed her quilt in vertical rows. She kindly shared her sashing measurements with me and I think I am going to copy her. But guess what? I am going to have to make more blocks!
I think I am going to try to focus on finishing up that project over the next few weeks.
How about you? Are you one of those people like me who juggles multiple projects at one time and tries not to feel too guilty about it? Or are you disciplined and just work on one thing at a time and not start something new until your current project is wrapped up?

Oh, I have several quilt tops that need to be quilted or finish the piecing. And then there are the countless cross stitch patterns I want to do up or are in unfinished stages. And don’t get me started on the knitting I’d like to do. Then there’s the usual daily stuff like housework and family. I don’t think I’ll ever get it all finished. Ugh

I have UFOs, PhDs and lots of “just lost interest” projects. I’m looking at retiring and I know that over the next 10 years I will never use up all the fabric.

I finally got my stack of tops quilted by a newish longarmer who does a fantastic job. Some of them were at least 6 years old! Of course I’m working on 2 or 3 (or 4 or 5) new projects to refill that pile. I can never seem to work on only one thing at a time!

I must be an anomaly… I like to work on one project at a time and get it done. I have one ongoing block of the month along with the current project I am working on. I did participate in the Moda Blockheads 2 years ago and kept up with it weekly but found , by the end of it, I was so tired of it that I have opted to do SALs that are much shorter. Over the last year, I am trying to use patterns/books that I have or participate in a free SAL as there are so many great free ones out there.

I’d say I do a combination of being on overload & finishing one quilt at a time. My niece has her first baby & knows I won’t tell her ‘no’ when she has a request…3 10″ Teddy Bears made out of newborn-size onesies, an Advent calendar for the baby like the one her Grandma made her (but no pattern can be found at Grandma’s), etc. And, the past many months I’ve made almost 300 masks for friends & family with seasonal & holiday themed fabrics. But…just ONE quilt at a time in between the rest of the sewing projects! I’m retired, so why not, right? Stay well!

I don’t really have any “must do” quilts right now, except for the one I want to finish for the 14th. This has allowed me to work on several more quilts at once, which is normal for me. I like having variety and do some piecing as leaders/enders.

Oh Nicole, you are in good company! Not only do I have far too many projects in the works…more in my mind to start and personal quilt tops to quilt…I have all of my wonderful customer quilts to work on!
It truly is a passion!
I too am determined to concentrate on finishing up my blockheads 3 quilt and have made all different sizes on purpose and will have fun deciding on the setting.
I look forward to seeing yours!

There are a lot of us right now doing the same thing you are doing. I have many tops waiting for the quilt fairy to visit and complete. Today I have a baby quilt to get finished ASAP. baby is arriving today! That should get me going! Have a great day. Be safe and be well!

I’m definitely a magpie. ;p I enjoy the process I just wish I had a bigger sewing space to organize everything. I use a small bedroom and it is crowded.

IMHO we quilters are able to juggle multiple projects. Some of us are the one at a time (with 4 or 5 more lined up in our minds) and get it done, and others of us are 5 or 6 in various stages. It’s all good!
That layout from Instagram looks great. My local quilt shop owner taught a class with multiple sized blocks, and then you just fit in “spacer units” to make all the rows add up to the correct size.

I like one quilt at a time. I am working on the stitchery sampler by Fig Tree right now and getting close to done so I’m getting organized to start Beach House by A Quilting Life. I’m waiting for two quilts at my long arm quilter. I’m thankful for this hobby during COVID..

I am definitely a magpie! I like the adrenaline rush of starting something new but then tire of it or get distracted by something else and onto the shelf it goes. This year, after moving to a new house and actually seeing and touching all those UFO’s, I’ve decided that I really would like to finish things in my stash instead of buying something new. We’ll see how that goes!
