Sigh of Relief

007

I am sighing a big sigh of relief to have gotten three quilts finished this past weekend.  These are going to be wonderful additions to my quilt collection, and I have no excuse for dragging things out so long.  Get them done, get them quilted, and get them on the beds!

The quilt in the picture above is Message in a Bottle, a Miss Rosie's Quilt Company pattern.  I adore the jewel like facets the blocks make when they are set diagonally.  Two super simple basic blocks–pinwheel and square in a square–and when you set them diagonnally and add pieced setting triangles, you get the most complex looking design.  I am thrilled that I finally got this pattern done, and highly recommend it.

Those plain squares sure do suggest some great custom quilting options too!

The designer of the pattern, Carrie Nelson, strongly recommended a mitered border on this quilt.  She suggests that a mitered border is a great look on most diagonally set quilts, an opinion I completely endorse.  However, after my complete failure to get a good looking mitered border on my Long Road Home quilt (pictured yesterday), I was not about to tackle that job again.  Bother.

Last, but not least, here is Hill Country Baskets, another pattern by Bonnie Blue Quilts.  It is a miracle I finished this quilt, because it took forever to line up the right fabrics, forever to make the basket blocks, F.o.r.e.v.e.r to attach the fussy cut lattices, and FOREVER to get up the energy to get the last two borders on.  Something within me persevered however, and I can add this quilt to my DONE!  list.  I think I am changing the name of this quilt to Forever.

Did I mention it is as big as a circus tent?  Yes it is. This will be wonderful on my queen sized bed.

  1. Nicole! These are all BEAUTIFUL!!! I meant to comment yesterday and got so busy I forgot to come back. 🙁 All 3 of your finishes are just wonderful from the fabric choices to the settings to the boarders!! Nice job on perserving to the end. I’d love to do all three ….one “Forever” from now! 🙂 lol

  3. Another 2 beautiful quilts Nicole! Definitely time to bask in the glow of just-finished-quilt glory. The ‘jewel’ effect of the Message in a Bottle blocks is amazingly striking and I hope you do get some lovely custom quilting on those neutral squares. On the right quilt it is worth the extra pennies!
Seeing you complete a series of quilts like this is the inspiration I need to get cracking on another quilt – I am in no-man’s-land at the moment and I need a project to get my teeth into!

  5. All three of these quilts (including yesterday’s) are gorgeous! I know the “Forever” quilt took a long time, but it is so worth it. I love that you fussy-cut all the lattice pieces–that is something that I would do as well. Great job!

  13. Lovely. “Forever” is beautiful. Isn’t that the name of a Judy Blume novel? I never read that one but I remember the name!

  15. Super finishes. It may seem “Forever” for you but compared to my speed it was a fast finish.

  19. All your quilts are B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L!! You have such a great sense of color and glad you got them done. Would love to see them after the quilting is done too!! Maybe I’ll get a few tops done this weekend too. Thanks for the inspiration!

  21. Okay, I officially want to make both the quilts featured here. You have done a magnificent job on both! And the Long Road Home from the previous post looks wonderful, as well. (I have already made it, if you recall.) You are to be commended for persevering as you did! You are definitely not alone; I too get bogged down when it comes to borders.

  23. These look fantastic, as does Long Road Home. I definitely can commiserate on the miter corners AND the dragging heels on wrapping things up. Sometimes I get tired of the same thing but seeing the finished piece done and off my wall serves as a pretty good incentive to ‘get her done’.
Congrats on the perseverance and finishes!

  25. Gorgeous quilts Nicole, your perseverance was definitely rewarded!!
I loved the Miss Rosie design so much I immediately went and bought it (wonderful that it was available as a PDF version too – no waiting)! This will make a great scrap quilt.

  29. How freakin’ happy are you today? Having three wall hangings would be an accomplishment for me, but three BIG quilts is just so inspiring! Love all three, but my favorite has to be the Long Road Home.

  31. I’m in LOVE w/ your Message in a Bottle quilt…. can I ask you a question? So I have saved all of the woven cotton clothes that my twin girls wore (they are 4 now– it’s quite a collection of fun prints) and I want to make a very scrappy quilt with them…. I have a mass of 5 inch squares and 2 1/2 inch strips…. what are the measurements in the pattern for all of those fun triangle shapes? Can I pull that pattern off w/ my clothes recycling loot? 🙂 Thanks a million!~Robin, [email protected]

  33. The quilts are awesome! I love the Message in a Bottle. I love quilts that use “easy” blocks to make an quilt that looks very difficult! Another one to add to my list of “one of these days” I’m going to make this quilt!

  39. It may have taken forever, but it is worth it – I adore this quilt! Makes me want to get the pattern even though I have so many patterns – dozens and dozens – I’ve not used yet. Your fabric choices really make this quilt. Well done!
And as I said before, don’t sweat the mitered borders. Our foremothers didn’t.
