I have pieced two sections of my Six Degrees quilt, the center panel and one corner section. There are 68 six inch blocks that surround the center panel, and the layout and stitching of the sections making up the quilt top is a bit of a production. Somewhat tedious, in fact. I think this is going to take me a couple of weekends to get through!
There is a funny story about how this quilt pattern got the name "Six Degrees". When the pattern designer Carrie Nelson was trying to think up a name for it, she was getting nowhere. Her friend suggested that she play the "six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon" game. The fabric she was using was Anna’s Starry Night, which made her think of Vincent Van Gogh, which made her think of Kirk Douglas (who played Van Gogh in a movie), Kirk Douglas’ daughter in law is Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was in "America’s Sweetheart" with Julia Roberts, who was in "Something to Talk About" with Kyra Sedgwick, who is married to….Kevin Bacon!
