Some Sewing

011

As you can see, I have a couple of projects on the design walls.  These two projects have been keeping me occupied in the lovely lazy week after Christmas.  I pulled out my Scrappy Trips box and made quite a few additional blocks.  I love the bright colors in this quilt, but the uncontrolled scrappiness makes me a little nervous, so I am aiming for a red strip in each block, that will form a distinct pattern throughout the top.

The other project, on the small design wall to the left, was inspired by Thelma and Carrie's project 25 Blocks, which they in turn were inspired by a video made by Camille Roskelley.  (Both Thelma and Carrie have a link to the video, so I won't repeat it here).  In her Craftsy video, Camille demonstrates how to make 25 different blocks using 16 half square triangles. It is so cool, really, how you can take one little unit and arrange it umpteen ways for different quilt blocks.

I just happened to have a basket of black and cream half square triangles that were left over from a little mistake I made back in 2012.  You may recall the incident where I made 384 half square triangles 2 inches square, when they should have been 2 1/2 inches square.  Oh yes, that was a dark day.

However, all's well that ends well.  Finally, a project where I can put those little guys to good use!  I have to say, I am having a lot of fun making these blocks.  Not much room for sloppy piecing though. That black and cream provides a sharp contrast that shows every misaligned seam intersection.  I may have to do a little re-sewing on some of them.  My blocks are finishing at 8 inches, which means I need to make at least 25 of them to get a full size quilt.  I have a certain man in mind who I think might enjoy this masculine looking quilt.

  1. Applause, applause!! You’ve been one gloriously busy quilter in the last week!
Yes, it is delightful when a past mistake gives you blocks ready to use for a stellar new project. How sweet it is!
Love the Scrappy Trips as I love scrap quilts. Yum!
What a lovely, long design wall you have!
We’re getting ready for cold weather but not nearly as cold as those poor folks are enduring northward.
    Hugs!

  7. Really nice way to salvage those little mistakes and great looking blocks. I will have to go back and see if I can find the patterns for those blocks….

  16. Both quilts are very nice Nicole. I know what you mean about the scrappiness, I get that way too sometimes. I tend to get a bit ‘too matchy’ at times.
I love Camille’s videos, she is so informative.

  22. Oooh this is inspiring! I also have started scrappy trips and that is an excellent suggestion of the red in each block! Thanks!
I haven’t been doing much of anything because I’m waiting for our first grandbaby (It’s a girl!)who is overdue!! But I’ve realized that sewing can keep my mind at ease!
