Spice Cake

IMG_2348

I worked on two projects while I was at the quilting retreat this past weekend.   The blocks shown in the photo above are from a pattern called Spice Cake by Mary's Cottage Quilts.  The blocks are just a simple snowball block made from a layer cake!  I used a layer cake of Charisma by Chez Moi for Moda.  Isn't that fabric fun?  This time of the year I tend to want to use happy fabrics.

This is the simplest quilt on the planet.  Thirty five snowball blocks, a 1 1/2 inch lattice and two borders–one 3 1/2" and the outer one 6".  Aren't those little confetti like lattice posts cute?   I just have the quilt center done, and hope to add the borders by the end of the week.

None of the shops in my area have carried this fabric group.  It is a bit similar to Posh by the same designers, so maybe folks thought it would be too much of a repetition.  I had to order the border fabric online, which was tricky.  I wanted to choose a fabric from the line that had all the colors in it.  This is the fabric I think I ordered for my outer border:

What a great pattern this was.  Fast, simple, and features a layer cake.

I will show you project number two tomorrow!

  1. Beautiful quilt!!! I made a prayer quilt out of the Posh fabric and it was so cheery looking.
I have to tell you that your blog is the first blog I read everyday! You are so inspiring and being a dog lover and owner also I love seeing how much you adore your dogs. I was so happy when you left your yucky job….I thought oh good, more posts and quilt pictures from you!!! Selfish on my part I know but that is how inspiring your blog is to me.

  7. That’s a clever way to use layer cakes. I bought two of them with no plans for them. I think one of them will be used in this way. I love easy piecing and I like that quilt a lot. I’m glad you posted it, thanks.

  9. I love Chez Moi fabric! What a great pattern and I love the way that it turned out!
You got a lot done at your retreat! The last retreat that I went to, I didn’t finish anything. However, I did start about 3 projects, which still aren’t completed!

  11. Very fun…simplest quilt, really? I need something simple! This pattern/fabric selection would certainly add color and cheer to a winter day…what a nice time to work on a quilt like this.

  17. Perfecto! I saw this pattern (or one like it) on the cover of a quilt magazine last month. Thanks for posting this — I was thinking of doing one out of flannel for an xmas gift. Now I’m sure of it — Looks like fun. Love, Love your colors.

  19. Hey Nicole! It’s Mary of Mary’s Cottage Quilts. I love your quilt!!! It looks SO cute. I loved that line and I had a hard time finding in in my area too (I think for the same reasons you stated).
I am so glad you liked making one of my patterns and thanks for the shout out – I think I have had about 6 orders for that pattern on my website – all a direct result of you!! So, Thanks!
(I have one more quilt that uses one layer cake, it’s called “Hot Cakes” and can be found on my website).
Thanks again, and your quilt is darling!

  21. I absolutely LOVE this quilt – beautiful job! – so I’m going to make one, too. I’ve posted a link on my blog so people will come and see what you made. I’ll also post picture of my finished product (provided it turns out okay).
    Thanks for sharing your projects!
