Square in a Square Quilt

This quilt was made in a fantastic class taught by Verna Mosquera of The Vintage Spool pattern company.  Verna is mainly known for her incredible applique skills, so this particular class offering was somewhat unusual, being solely a pieced project.  Having long been a fan of her designs, I jumped at the chance to take her class when one was offered in my area.  I think I learned more about color choices and fabric selections from Verna in that one afternoon, than in the 20 odd years I have been quilting.  Verna had a unique twist on the classic Square in a Square block, that shows up well in the close up photo:

The technique was to  first assemble as many  compatible fabrics as possible, in a range of large  prints, geometrics and small prints.  In constructing the block, a large floral was used as the center of each Square in a  Square block.  The next round  of each block was a geometric pattern; a dot, a stripe, a plaid, a check etc.  The final round was always a small print.  This was an instructive and enjoyable pattern to work with, and each person’s final result was extremely pleasing.

  3. I have been busy and I am just now catching up on your blog — YOU have been busy! What a wonderful collection of fabric and stacks of containers for fabric. It certainly is important to have a fairly good sized collection on hand :))
