State Fair

Hey, did anybody besides me jump right on the June Schnibbles project, State Fair?  Talk about a cute pattern.  I have had this on my To Do list ever since it was released.  Terrific selection Sinta and Sherri!

I had a layer cake of a collection called Odyssea by MoMo, an adorable Japanese designer for Moda.  MoMo's designs are always whimisal, colorful, and ever so slightly surreal.  Two of her other collections are Wonderland and Freebird.  If you are not familiar with her, do check her out at the Moda website .

Since I have a good amount of the fabric to play with, I plan to make the Schnibbles more quilt sized.  The blocks are super fun to make, since you have lots of opportunities to combine the cute fabric strips into your block.  Another nice feature of this block pattern is that it is made larger and meant to be trimmed down.  That always leads to wonderful accuracy.  And just see how all those troublesome pinked edges are getting trimmed right off.

I am just using my six inch square Omnigrid ruler for the trimming step.  It is going quickly, and in no time I finished quite a few blocks.  How cute are these?

As I was mentioning yesterday, it seems that these days designers are being true to their designated color palettes, and when I found I needed some extra pinks for State Fair, I pulled what I needed from another MoMo collection, Wonderland.  It all works perfectly together!

  1. Look at that! It’s turning out so wonderful!!!
I have been falling behind on my Schnibbles. I have fallen into a serious slump in my creative process. Work has been crazy and I think that has thrown me off a bit. I haven’t created anything since April.
I also think that I have developed a fear of cutting. I get that from time to time (http://textilehouse.blogspot.com/2009/08/fear-of-cutting.html).
The fabrics are so gorgeous I am constantly questioning my pattern choice, my fabric choice… I love that I can live vicariously through your enthusiasm and creativity!

  3. I’m doing a State Fair from a jelly roll of American Jane Snippets. Somehow using Snippets for Schnibbles just seemed appropriate.
The amount of waste in this design as written broke my heart, so I made plastic templates to cut the quadrilateral shapes from the jelly roll strips, flipping the template back and forth, so of course I ended up with half my blocks turning like they’re supposed to, clockwise, and the other half counterclockwise. I’m not sure if I’m going to end up with 2 quilts here or if I’m going to mess around with the layouts so that I can use all the blocks in one. I’m still only about half done piecing so I can put off the decision a long time.

  11. Wow Nicole! It looks great – it’s certainly a big change from Elizabeth though!
Isn’t it incredible how without being told you would just know those were Japanese fabrics. They are gorgeous – I’ve certainly never seen anything like them over this side of the Atlantic!

  19. Just got caught up on your blog. So sorry to hear about your husband’s job. Some times things happen for the best. We’ll keep thinking positive thoughts for you. I also noticed you were looking for new books. I’ve read some of the suggestions and I have an additional one: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Sadly it’s the only book this author wrote, but it’s the best book I’ve read in years. I can’t recommend too much.

  21. Seriously great colors! Something I normally wouldn’t pick, but something I like. I think we all need to stretch our color/design pallet at times. Great pattern!
