Stir Crazy Projects

IMG_2200

Things have been pretty rough around here for the past week, as you all know.  Most of my time has been spent scavenging for news of the fire on my laptop.  I have not been able to concentrate very well on Viola, which really deserves my full attention.  I picked it up and messed about for a couple of hours, but I knew I wasn't going to do it justice.

Then, Tuesday morning, I saw a Carrie Nelson post on Moda, The Cutting Table.  She was making some adorable zippy bags using diamond shaped pieces.  I have never really worked with diamond shapes before, and was up for seeing what I could do.  Since the project starts with sewing strips together, then cutting the units with the 60 degree mark on a ruler, I figured I had the mental stamina to figure it out.  Since I wasn't sure if my project was going to be a success, I pulled out a jelly roll of an old Sandy Gervais collection called "Fall Back In Time".  I had already used quite a lot of the yardage of that group to make some other projects, so I figured if I ruined this jelly roll it would not be a huge loss.

Carrie was using two inch strips for her zippy bag, which seems a good proportion.  My two inch effort is on the right.  I think it is just right for bags.  I made enough strips and diamond shaped units to make one bag (with two inch strips) and three table runners with 2 1/2 inch strips/units.  I wanted to get the most mileage out of the jelly roll strips and didn't want to waste time trimming them down to two inches.

I completed one side of a bag, and two table toppers on Tuesday.  I quilted and bound one of the table toppers up and gave it to my son in law, who appreciates these things.  I will finish another for my Dad's house and maybe keep one for me.  Cute for fall, right?   I am stuck with the bag though, because I have no coordinating fabric for the top and bottom pieces that go above and below the diamond pieced panel.  I know I can match the cream, but that isn't terribly practical.  I do love the smaller proportions of the smaller diamonds.

Anyway, check out Carrie's post and the links to the bag tutorial.  It's a fun project, and the zipper instructions are a little different, which is good.

Did I tell you we were supposed to take Eva to Disneyland this week on vacation?  We cancelled due to the fire.  My loss is insignificant compared to those of others.  But still.  Blah.  Bad fire.

I read the Carrie blog. bags are a project I have not tackled. Zippers make me shutter. haven’t done one for many years. one of these days I will have to overcome my fear! They are so darn cute!

  4. You do amaze me with the things you can accomplish in the midst of worries, concerns and bothers due to the bad, bad fire.
Love the little diamonds, the table runners, and the wee side of the bag. Applause for getting anything done, much less completing one of the table runners!
What a shame the trip to Disneyland had to be canceled, but it’s best to do as y’all did: be wise and keep safety first even when it’s not fun.
    Hugs!

  7. Blah indeed. Hope you get a rain check. You certainly are productive even when it seems like it’s impossible to accomplish anything.

  10. I’ve read Carrie’s post and love her bag! It’s so so cute:-) I’ve recently made Joanna’s Mini juniper pattern for the Schnibbles parade and there you also work with 60 degree and it sure was fun. Joanna has a Craftsy class just with 60 degree and diamond shaped projects perhaps you wanna check it out.
Give Eva a hug for missing Disneyland because I can imagine how sad she is for missing all the fun.

  13. Sandy Gervais tends to use that lovely turquoise blue a lot in her collections. I just love her designs and rich colors. Great use of an old jelly roll!!
Glad the smoke has cleared and hope that the fire burns itself out sooner rather than later. Pretty horrible news on a daily basis coming from NorCal. Here in SoCal we are being told that the fire danger will remain very high for the rest of the year. There have been some fires but none that haven’t been controlled quickly and put out. Sorry about Disneyland…

  16. Your diamonds are really beautiful after the dreadful times you have been experiencing recently. A little break from reality is good for you! There will be other Disneyland trips in the future; disappointing now, but that will evaporate when you finally get to take that trip! Continued good wishes for staying safe & away from the fire’s harm.

  19. I saw her post there with the Noodlehead pattern! I think that was a great project to divert your attentions!
I need to get back to Viola. Honestly… I have been super busy sewing but nothing I can really show. A deadline popped up on me.
But I am just about ready to focus back on Viola…soon.
Yesterday was our first day with blue skies! I was so grateful to see that beautiful sky.
    Wishing you blue skies too!
