String Quilts

Clark st

Have you ever made a string quilt?  Moda is sponsoring a "String Along" project If you are interested.  The recent post on Moda's blog The Cutting Table got me thinking about the fact that I have never really made a string quilt.  Oh, I made a little string quilted heart one time, but that was 20 years ago.  I didn't really know what I was doing.  I have a feeling that string quilts are making a come back, so when I saw this pattern called "String Along", I gave it a second look.

Well, I did more than that.  I bought the pattern and two fat eighths bundles of Linzee McCray's new collection "Feed Sacks Red Rover".

Red Rover is a retro feeling collection that is bright and cheerful and just the fabric to work with in the gloom of January.

I love the challenge of trying something new, and I think this may be a great project for me in the new year.  The pattern involves foundation paper as well as using a 90 degree ruler, both of which are intriguing to me.

The Moda String Along  starts December 28.  It seems as if folks are welcome to do any sort of string quilting project that suits their fancy.  There are some good suggestions and lists of what you need to get started on the blog post.  There are a couple of additional tutorials on string quilting you may be interested in checking out:  Sherri McConnell has one, and so does Amanda Nyberg.

I think it might be fun to try something new and learn a different technique.  I am thinking that i may just have to jump in and give string quilting a try in the new year.  How about you?  Are you intrigued too?

  4. I did read all this stuff. The idea of using foundation paper sounded like a pain in the behind to me. What do you think about it? Am I being a crabby grinch? I do like the looks of the quilts I must say. I will read these blog tutorials and so I am at this point in time “maybe”. or maybe I will wait and see and let you do it first! Have a great weekend and holidays! The fun begins!

  7. I, too, have been reading the string quilt blog at Moda. So far, I’m not planning to make one…notice I said ‘so far’! I have quite a few things in the works for way too long that I want to finish up. Looking forward to seeing what everyone does! Merry Christmas! 🎁🛍🎄🎅🏻

  13. Merry Christmas to you, Nicole! Yep, I am planning on sewing along with the string along. I came across Film in the Fridge’s sting quilts several years ago and I’ve been saving strings ever since. I’ve never made one, so I’m super excited to have this push in getting started on one. I’m going to put mine on muslin…not sure if that’s the right thing or not?? and have a continuous dark colour running through the middle of my blocks. Maybe red or chocolate?? Have a wonderful Christmas with your family, Nicole.

  16. What a cute quilt! I think I’d name it “Faded Glory when done in feedsack colors.
Too many UFOs call to me so I won’t be joining this sew-along. Have fun!

  19. String quilts are fun. Lori at Humble Quilts is also hosting a String along, her recent post has got some good info as well. It will be fun to watch all the variations that emerge from these two events. ps I don’t use any foundation on my strings, no extra layers and no need to remove all that paper.
