Succulent Garden

001

This last weekend I had a chance to visit one of my sisters.  My husband and I had tickets to a play in the City, and we spent the night at my sister's place on Saturday night.  Sunday morning my sister and her husband took me to a local garden nursery that was simply amazing.  If I lived near it, I swear I would be visiting it at least twice a week.  I'd need a truck, and a gardener to plant all the stuff I bought.

Since money and space in the car were both tight, I had to content myself with the purchase of the makings of the little succulent garden you see pictured above.  I had such fun choosing the plants and the ceramic dish I planted them in.  It was hardly a bargain, but I know I will enjoy it all summer long and hopefully for seasons to come.

The little succulents that look like rosettes are called Hens and Chicks.  The lighter green and pinkish plant on the right is a Donkey's Tail Sedum.  I don't know what the shaggy looking specimin on the left is, but I think it will spill over the sides of the dish eventually.  I can't wait to see how this fills in!

  1. Oh…sweet planter and love your choice of plants…I try to stay away from garden centers as I love all kinds of plants and get into trouble quickly. Nice summer pot!

  4. What a treat to see a play and get to visit your sister!
How pretty this little dish garden is and will be for ages to come. What does Miss E think of these plants? Is Ozzie likely to dig them up?
My mother always had a tallish pot of Hen and Chickens but it had little holes here and there around the sides with “balconies” under each hole. The “chickens” would grow out those holes.
    Hugs!

  7. You can plant the hen and chicks outside around your house. They withstand IL winters very well and multiply quite well on their own. Have had them along side our house since before we bought it and they make a space that needs “something” look good. Enjoy!

  10. Jealous! I haven’t been to a nursery in so long, and we use to garden all the time (before kids). I think there is a close tie between those who like to quilt and those who also like to garden. Enjoy it!

  13. I live in Portland Oregon but visit SF often because our daughter and her husband and son live there. I have been to that nursery and absolutely love it. I also could spend loads there but if we fly we are limited to what we can take home. When we drive we do manage a few treasures and have planted them in pots on our deck where most survive well.
    Enjoy yours.
