Summer Memories: Light at the end of the tunnel

Sum Mem with lattice
Oh wow, here we are, nearly at the finish of the Summer Memories project designed by Susan Ache. I have the lattice all cut out and some of it assembled. It won't take long to get that done, and the outer border attached. It is indeed a light, summery quilt. I am so glad I stuck with this, even though I was so sick of making half-square triangles for all those basket blocks that my eyes were crossed by the end.

Hydrnageas
It's funny, these hydrangeas always bloom for my birthday, which is coming up this week. I seem to recall that this particular plant was an actual birthday gift some years past, and it keeps on blooming every year to say "Happy Birthday" right on schedule.

Red wht blue verbena
Do you grow verbenas? I was late to that party, but now plant several pots of them every summer. They are so prolific in their blooms, and if you are good about shearing them back, they will keep blooming all summer long. My idea was to plant a red, white, and blue arrangement in the pot. So where's the white?

Ipomea
This was also kind of funny. The plant on the left is calibrachoa, which is pretty prolific and often takes over the pot and trails over the side. Very dramatic and a good performer. This time, I decided to pair it with ipomoea (on the right), also known as "sweet potato vine". This didn't turn out quite as I envisioned. That bright chartreuse green plant has totally dominated the planter. I expect it will cover up the yellow calibrachoa any minute.

Pink calbrochoa
I spent hours deadheading geraniums, verbena, lantana, and other flowering plants this past weekend. Calibrachoa is a plant that is great in hanging baskets and doesn't require any particular attention such as deadheading. It even comes back the next year, which makes it easy in our climate.

Are you enjoying your early summer flowers? What is your favorite to plant in the garden or in pots for summer color?

  1. It’s good that you stuck with this quilt- very summery indeed! I like the slight variances in the baskets. It’s not totally matchy-matchy and encourages the eye to roam.

  4. Oh, and flowers- we had so much rain early spring that everything is giant-size this year! I’m really loving my peonies, and the hydrangea blooms will be huge.

  10. I’d say that your quilt is worth the cross-eyes! I love it! I was trying to remember if you used a collection of fabrics or if you gathered the fabrics. I looked backed, but I wasn’t able to find that info. And if you were to make this quilt again in other, different colours, what would those colours be??

  16. The striped lattice is a perfect compliment to the baskets as are the red cornerstones. My favorite flowers for summer are pansies. We planted them one day & the deer came up ON the deck & ate them a couple of nights later!!! We put what was left of the plants back in the soil & are beginning to see a few pansies trying again. Here’s hoping! 🤞I’m wishing you a very happy birthday this week!

  22. Wow, I love the stripes. Your top was worth all the work. It turned out great. We were up to Big Bear and wow did we see a lot of flowers we’ve not ever seen before. There was literally a whole mountain side of blooming Flannel bush. A real flower show all over the place. In thinking of a move I would love to live somewhere with water so I can really garden again. Been a lot of years.

  25. Wow! You really got those baskets done! I knew I didn’t have it in me… but maybe a Halloween version? Haha. So my favorite is marigolds.. they keep blooming, and the deer don’t eat them. Your baskets are lovely— just like my quilts, I am always behind on garden plans! Xoxo

  28. Very pretty, summery quilt!! I was also late to the verbena party but they are one of my favourites now- both the trailing and upright. I am also loving the coleus that come in so many different shades and patterns. My peonies are about to bloom -I just wish they lasted longer. Have a happy birthday.
