That Wasn’t What I Expected

IMG_2530

How about that?  My husband gave me a new Bernina!  It is the 740 model, and I have to admit, I am a bit intimidated by all the fancy computerized settings.  I have had it for a while, and have been waiting for the shop where we purchased it to offer a four hour long class on how to use it.  The class for December was cancelled, and finally the January class date rolled around.  The class was some distance from where we live, a two hour drive one way.  My husband came with me, thank goodness, and helped me get set up in the classroom.  I had been told to bring the machine and all the accessories that had come with it.

Oh boy, was I excited.  I was going to learn all about my new machine and go home full of enthusiasm to start using it.

Not what happened at all.

The instructor rolled in late, saying it was raining and it slowed her up.  ?  I'm sorry, I drove two hours in the rain to get there and managed to arrive on time.  Not a good beginning.  And things deteriorated from there.  It was clear from the outset that the instructor had no plan what so ever.  There were no hand outs, no introductions, no nothing.  She had us get out our little container of oil and she showed us how to oil the machine.  She said we should do this after using two bobbins worth of thread, which seemed excessive to me.  But what do I know?

She wandered around the room, stopping briefly at each of the six student's table to see what model of Bernina they had.  She inquired, "So how do you all like that automatic needle threader?"  Um, I am not sure, since I have no idea how to use it.  Could you show us perhaps?

After an hour of this, one of the shop clerks came into the class room dragging a gigantic box.  It turns out, one of the students in the class had purchased an elaborate embroidery machine.  The next hour was spent unboxing it, setting it up, and introducing the woman to her new machine.  The five of us other students sat with our hands in our laps not having a clue what we were supposed to be doing.

After two hours of absolutely no value, I packed up my machine and walked out of the class room without a word.  No one seemed to notice.  I got in the car and we drove two hours home.  I was nearly in tears.

I was so disappointed and upset.  The class was described as a "Learn How To Use Your New Bernina".  In the small print it promised instruction on the computer features, how to use all the different presser feet, how to make button holes, etc etc.  It was a complete lie.  I think I can get better instruction from YouTube videos and tutorials.

The worst of the whole wretched experience was not so much the lack of instruction and colossal waste of our time, but that my husband, who had been so excited to provide me with this expensive piece of equipment, was so disappointed for me.  I felt so bad for him that he had to witness this shabby experience and see how upset I was.

The day wasn't a total waste however.  We stopped at a Staples office supply store and my husband bought me a new chair to use at my sewing table.  I can adjust it to sit nice and high and think I will be much more comfortable.

Notice the new chair is positioned in front of my old Bernina.  I guess it will be awhile longer before I can actually use the new machine.

  1. Oh how disappointing for you! And your husband! I hope you let the shop know about the negative experience so that they can improve on their service. Thank goodness for YouTube videos – we learn so much from them.

  4. That is horrible. You MUST contact Bernina and tell them your experience. It is not how they operate and they need to know how they are being represented

  13. I agree with Donna and Margo, you must contact the shop and also Bernina. I would ask the shop if the machine can be returned since you have not used it and were not given the promised instruction. That should get some action. There are other good brands of sewing machines out there which offer good instructional classes. Maybe one is nearer to your home.

  16. Last year when I bought my new Bernina, living 2 hours from the dealer, I found excellent videos on YouTube. That helped me a lot, though no newbie to Berninas, I found out a lot about my machine, and what it could do!

  19. So sorry for your experience. I agree you should contact Bernina. If you paid for the class, the shop should refund your money. I received a Bernina 770 for xmas a year ago and love it. I didn’t take a single class, but could have. I found the manual very helpful as compared to the manuals for my other Berninas. It is intimidating but it’s only because of the size. I found mine to be easier to use than my 440 is. Search for Bernina groups on Facebook, too. Lots of quick help in those rooms. Bernina USA may be a place to start as well.

  22. Yes, let both Bernina and the shop know. Ask to speak to the owner of the shop. If you call in and tell whoever answers the phone, you can’t be sure that the owner hears of the “service” that you received. But, oooh! I would love the even feed option with all of the feet!

  25. If I didn’t know we lived in different states, I would swear we were in the same class! I have bought two machines from this dealer. My first was a simple light weight machine to take to classes. I didn’t need instruction
On this one and still love it. Then I bought a high end one and can
Barely turn it on. I had a simple question, how to lower the presser foot
All the way down, after being in hyper lift, I showed them the model I had
From their floor models hoping to avoid carrying the heavy machine
    Up my
Basement stairs. Nope! Too simple. They told me to bring it in. So my
Son put the machine in my car yesterday. And then I ordered
A new machine from a different dealer who seems nice😌

  28. Perhaps, when you feel up to making the drive again, you can set up a private lesson with a DIFFERENT instructor. The shop owes you lessons on how to use the machine, and they should follow through on that obligation. You have certainly tried to take advantage of the lessons they offered, but that was inadequate. They should be HAPPY to ensure that you know how to use a machine you purchased at their shop. You should be able to go to as many lessons and refreshers as you need until you are totally comfortable with the machine. Perhaps you need to speak with the shop owner.

  34. I love my Bernina sewing machine(s), the local shop, not so much. Recently, (last October), the store was sold and I was hoping for better customer service/classes with the new owners, but it has gotten worse.

  40. By all means contact Bernina USA. I did over a repair issue on my 40 year old 830. They got right back to me, told me to take it back to shop and told shop how to repair the problem. We have been great friends ever since. Even bought a new 380, took the class and yes I drive about two hours one way. A new Bernina is a terrible thing to waste.

  52. wow, I had a very similar experience with my Bernina when it was new. The free classes from the shop seemed more like a infomercial than a class. I have a basic model and she focused on how to use features and feet that I do not have, nor ever expect to use. Fortunately I have been able to get information and instruction from the gals in my guild as most have Berninas.

  55. I agree with everyone – contact Bernina – if you can I would also tweet about it / put it on Facebook / instagram , infact any new media you can think of. That is apparently the quickest way to get a reaction as Bernina monitor postings and don’t want bad experiences going viral.

  58. I would return it (I worked at a Bernina/Janome dealer once – and I know how expensive it must have been). Find a dealer closer that will give you better customer service. I prefer Janome (after owning both I think Janome is a better value and is a nice machine ) but I’ve found that dealer support is the most valuable thing no matter what brand.

  64. So sorry for your experience. I also have a Bernina 740 and love it, but it was a steep learning curve for me. I’ve taken 2 classes at my dealer…they were so-so…think I learned more from classmates than the instructor! I also learned a ton from a friend with the same machine. The cd and YouTube videos are helpful. Call the shop owner, tell them your experience, and get another help session. Bernina shop needs to make this right! Hang in there, you will love this machine!

  67. I wish we were closer. That just sucks. Call Bernina and insist they find you some help. Don’t give up. I got a 750 several years ago and it is a fabulous machine. I do all my piecing on my 440 and the straight quilting and machine quilt like crazy on the 750. It really is a work horse and you will grow to love it a lot. It is intimidating until you have a comfort level and understand the workings. What an awful experience to such a wonderful and thoughtful gift. He is a keeper!

  70. I am sorry for this experience too. However, I will say that I was also told to oil after every two bobbins or so which is what I do.

  76. That’s such a bad experience…do tell the shop or it won’t change for anyone else.
I have a new 770 and cannot find local help but would have to travel to Bernina in London, about a 5 hour car ride each way. Next class is mid April and is already full.
I found superb video tutorials online at sewingmastery.com. It might be worth your taking a look?
There is also a BerninaLovers group on facebook

  79. First, what a great husband to surprise you with a new machine! And, to drive with you to the shop for lessons earns him even higher ratings!! I opened your blog this morning & saw you already have 28 comments so I knew something must be up! I agree you should call Bernina headquarters, post on as much social media as you can & speak to the shop owner about your disappointment in their lack of customer service! My Bernina shop is also two hours one way & my similar experience was WITH the owner, so I get your sadness over the whole situation.

  82. I am so sorry you had this experience! I work for “another company”, and honestly it doesn’t matter which one, because this happens too frequently across the board. I wish I were there to help you. Do look at the videos though. I hear they can be very helpful. Call the store and let them know, ask them to schedule you with someone who knows the machine, and see if you can use their floor model. They need to take care of their customers! I know it should not be up to you, but you will find the right person to help you. Someone does care!

  88. I am so sorry to hear about your Bernina experience! When I bought my 440QE several years ago I started out with mechanical problems with it. Bought my machine at an out of state quilt show. Didn’t like my local dealer at all. Contacted the district manager and Bernina. The upper level personnel made it right with me. And I love my machine.
Your husband is a great guy for getting you this machine!!

  91. Grrrr! You should definitely call the shop and speak to the owner. The shop should offer you an individual lesson (the shop where I bought my Janome does that) and, given the fact you drove two hours both ways, it should be a house call!!

  94. So sorry that happened to you! I received the class you were expecting when I bought my Bernina 10 years ago and it helped so much. I would have been devastated had this happened to me. I hope you can find some help.

  97. I’m so sorry that you had such a miserable experience – I have my 4th Bernina now and I love it! My local shop is very good about taking the workbook that Bernina provides and working through the lessons – they do 4 or 5 weeks of 1-1/2 hour long classes to help you learn your machine. And, you’re welcome to come back any time for a refresher.
You should contact Bernina and let them know about your experience. They may take away that shops right to sell/teach/service their machines, but they may also be able to provide you with another shop name.
Good luck, I know you’ll love the machine once you’ve learned how to use it from a qualified instructor!

  103. I feel so badly for you! I’m sorry your (supposed) learning experience was such a let-down. It’s definitely frustrating to spend so much money and get so excited about a machine and then have outside sources ruin the experience.
On the other hand–you have a wonderful husband! I’m glad that he is there to support and encourage you in your quilty ways!

  106. I have that machine, and LOVE it! It does take some getting used to, but so worth it. My experience with Bernina classes has not been great. They do a general tutorial – for any Bernina. I wanted info on just mine, and all the computer stuff. When they show you the feet, it’s more to sell the different, unusual feet that Bernina has. That four hour class includes every Bernina made. It might be worth it to call and see if you can have an individual help you one on one for your machine. If I lived closer I’d come on over. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

  109. Dissappointing experience, hopefully Bernina will get in contact with you and offer you a class somewhere else. Road to California was great. Loved the Lion King quikt exhibit and all the amazing vendors. The rain was so heavy on Friday it kept the crowd down great for me.

  112. I had the same experience when I bought my Bernina 440 from Dublin Sewing. I was pissed. It was a dark, dank, crowded classroom with people who had bought all different models of machines. I recommend them for servicing machines but not for classes. 🙁

  115. I use to work For the Singer Company. We would get complaints about people as many as 15 years after the purchase of a machine. You really need to call the shop and the company corp. office. They don’t know this is happening if it isn’t reported. I hope you can use your machine to it’s full potential.

  118. I had a similar experience with my 830LE. The “Guide Class” was focused on feet that did not come with the machine. When I inquired when we would learn how to use those feet that it came with, I was told that a class for that was not provided.
Like many other people who purchased the 830LE I also had machine problems. In fact after I paid for the machine I could not take it home with me because the automatic needle threading device was broken. I immediately had problems with other basic stitching elements and it had to be sent back to Chicago for a couple of months. I wrote a letter to the CEO and received a very poor response. After reading about problems associated with Bernina machines and their instruction for the past few years it comes down to this, if you find a great dealer, you will probably have a great experience. I was beyond disappointed with my class, and it is especially ironic because I taught quilting classes for this shop years ago. I delivered “skill sets” in the quilting classes that I taught, and I would have never designed a “Guide Class” like the one that I encountered. I believe there is a standard curriculum that Bernina has developed for their 7 and 8 series machines. You should have received extensive instructional material and had an opportunity to practice each instructional element. When I had my horrible experience I happened to contact a Bernina dealer in Humble, Texas. We had a very long conversation about the fantastic instructional support they provide. It became clear to me that Bernina doesn’t set standards for their dealerships – the dealership can design their classes anyway they like. I found that if I paid an additional $300 that another dealership would “adopt” me. I refused to do that, received no positive resolution from Bernina and have taught myself. I’ve owned Bernina’s since 1986 and it is very unlikely that I will purchase another one, unless I find a shop similar to the one in Humble, Texas. I was finishing up a quilt with a deadline this week, and had two very significant problems. Luckily I was able to resolve the problems myself, but it is very likely that I will purchase a Juki – something that is reliable… Interestingly enough, people who have fantastic skills, like Sharon Schamber, use a Juki.

  121. I am so sorry this happened. I do hope you plan on contacting the owner of the shop. I would also contact another Bernina dealer, tell them your story and see if they will help you. I am lucky to live in an area with a lot of different help options for my Bernina. I bought my 440QE in Walnut Creek and they were very helpful. I’d be interested to know where you went.

I had my sewing machine serviced and also had a terrible experience with the shop ( long story ) Whatever happened to Customer Service ?

  127. I’m disappointed for you!
Like many people have suggested, I encourage you to send an email to the shop politely expressing your disappointment & identifying specific items the facilitor could do differently to improve attendee satisfaction in the future (ie: arrive before the scheduled time, ask all attendees what they hope to learn before starting the session, have a session outline, identify resources for post session questions, etc, etc).
If you don’t let the shop know, someone else will be equally disappointed in the future.

  130. Not a typical mastery class experience I promise! Leota provided a link to the mastery classes in her comment above. That is what my dealer uses and it’s very helpful. There is also a FB group and Yahoo group specific to the 7 series. LOTS of useful information there! I have the 780 and it’s really an intuitive machine but I have owned a previous Bernina. Things like the needle threader are the same on the other machine I had.

  133. Congrats on your new machine but what a bummer. I hope that you write to Bernina and tell them about your excuse for an instructional class. I have purchased 3 machines at dublin sewing center and have been really happy with the classes on how to use the machines. The bonus is you can re-take their classes as many times as you want for the life of the machine. I took the serger class twice, many years apart – I had forgotten how to thread the darn thing. I hope you like your machine.

  136. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience….but trust me, you have a fabulous machine there. I have one and absolutely love it. by the way it will tell you when it’s time to oil it.
There should have been an instructional CD with it. Also the manual is really quite comprehensive. I didn’t bother with any classes and just worked the manual. But that being said…there was no excuse for such poor service.
Maybe just plug that baby in and give it a try….it’s looks scarier than it actually is. good luck.

  142. I absolutely love my new Bernina 770, so please don’t give up! There is a great support group on Facebook for Bernina 700 series. They answer any question! I was lucky enough to have a great dealer that had 4 classes for Bernina newbies. Learned a ton, but I also found a lot of videos on You Tube that were helpful. Gotta love those Hubs! What a great gift! Mine did the same thing…..he even named it “Merlin” since he says I create magic with it!

  145. Sorry you had to go through that. I don’t have a Bernina, but I was also promised a free class with my new machine. It took a month to schedule, like yours, but since I wanted to use the machine while it was in the warranty period (learned the hard way not to wait), I read the small guide, and did some basic work. The class went over exactly what was in the book, and was also disorganized. I think YouTube videos and the manual really are the way to learn.

  148. hmm — 2 hours from you might be Walnut Creek or Lafayette? I took a “how to use” class at Walnut Creek. It was a little disjointed since everyone had different machines, but I did learn some tricks… haven’t taken machine classes elsewhere. I agree that you should complain loudly to whichever store it was!

It is always much easier for me when people show me but drag the book out surely you can get some info out of that…….
    pretty poor service……..

  163. When I bought my 440 seven yrs ago, I had trouble attending the promised classes and finally worked out a schedule with my employer so that I could attend the classes. A month after my last class, the shop closed abruptly. I had hoped to find a community of quilters there. It forced me to find blogs and you tube and I learned by doing. I am in the same camp as Audrey, I might consider returning this in favor of finding a supportive dealer no what what brand they sell. Hubby is a keeper.
